Sports Seriously
The Sweet 16 of the men's 2025 NCAA Tournament continues Friday night with an all-SEC matchup in the Midwest region as the March Madness bracket officially gets whittled down to eight teams heading into the weekend.
The Tennessee Volunteers earned a No. 2 seed in the 2025 March Madness bracket and defeated the Wofford Terriers in the first round and the UCLA Bruins in the second round to reach this point. Tennessee's opponent, the 3-seeded Kentucky Wildcats, advanced after defeating both the Troy Trojans and the Illinois Fighting Illini.
Tennessee ranks as the fifth-best team in the KenPom rankings, sporting the 17th-best offense and third-best defense. Meanwhile, Kentucky ranks 15th overall with the 11th-ranked offense and 45th-ranked defense. Tennessee lost both of its regular-season meetings against Kentucky during SEC play this year.
Here's how our experts see Friday's Sweet 16 clash playing out. Be sure to check out the complete March Madness 2025 Sweet 16 schedule, times and TV info.
Tennessee vs. Kentucky picks and predictions
Three of our four experts are expecting Tennessee to continue dancing into the Elite Eight. Only USA TODAY's Craig Meyer is predicting Kentucky to win and advance. However, AZ Central's Jeremy Cluff and Louisville Courier Journal's Ryan Black are both taking Kentucky to cover the 4.5-point spread. That leaves Knoxville News Sentinel's Mike Wilson as the lone wolf laying the points with the Volunteers. Meyer and Wilson are taking the under 144.5-point total, while Cluff and Black are on the over.

Connor Zilisch And Risk: Let Injury Heal And Celebrations Continue
NASCAR Cup Series Connor Zilisch And Risk: Let Injury Heal And Celebrations Continue Published Aug. 13, 2025 12:20 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Connor Zilisch has no reason to rush back to racing. And no reason to stop celebrating wins. Zilisch took a nasty fall Saturday afternoon after winning the Xfinity race at Watkins Glen. He put one foot up on the roof and the other on the driver's side window sill — and forgot to tuck the window net inside the door so he had a foot on that webbing. As the team tossed water in celebration, his foot on the window sill slipped and he fell awkwardly. He indicated he was briefly knocked out, and he had surgery Tuesday on his broken collarbone. He had a plate and screws put in his left shoulder to stabilize the broken bone and to make it heal faster. The Xfinity Series is off this weekend and then it heads to Daytona, the Portland road course and World Wide Technology Raceway (Gateway) for the final three races of the regular season. Zilisch could conceivably return at Daytona, but why risk it? He could conceivably return at Portland, but why risk it? He could conceivably return for the playoffs, but why risk it? ADVERTISEMENT If there is any reasonable risk that another crash could make the injury worse than it would if he was fully healed, there's little reason for Zilisch to race. He knows that he will race Cup next season (that should be announced soon). He knows, at age 19, he could have 20-plus good (or great) seasons ahead of him. An Xfinity title would be nice, but Zilisch isn't going to be judged on how many Xfinity titles he wins. And there could be the argument that the future is uncertain — what happens if he falls again and suffers injuries that end his career. Wouldn't he want that Xfinity title on his resume? Sure. But the likelihood is that he has Cup stardom in his grasp. He has six Xfinity wins this year as a rookie — and a rookie who is in his first full season of racing stock cars in any national series. He possibly could become the first driver to go from NASCAR to Formula 1 if his progression continues and he wins a couple of Cup titles quickly. So this is not the time to rush a return no matter how badly the competitor in him or the championship desires of JR Motorsports (where he races Xfinity) or Trackhouse. He should come back when doctors have confidence that another hit won't do more damage, whether that's Daytona next week or Daytona next February. Now if he does race and wins, how will he handle celebrations? Hopefully a little more carefully. He can still stand on a door. If he tucks the window net inside the car, it shouldn't be much of a problem. For sure he could fall again. But accidents happen. Winning races, as easy as he might make it look, should be celebrated. They should include emotion. Even if someone needs to bring something to put on his shoes or a mat by the car, let's still get on top of it and yell and throw beer or soda or energy drinks. Let the 19-year-old be a racer who can bask in the moment. He could just as easily slip and fall while walking around the car after the spraying of liquids in celebration. Oh don't tell me we've got to get rid of the liquids, too. Sanity, please. He needs to celebrate his wins. Just not rush to get the next one. Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR and INDYCAR for FOX Sports. David Booth's $300 Million Gift to Kansas: How it Will Transform Stadium, More
College Football David Booth's $300 Million Gift to Kansas: How it Will Transform Stadium, More Published Aug. 13, 2025 11:49 a.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Kansas has received a $300 million gift from donor David Booth, the largest in school history and believed to be among the richest in the history of college sports. Booth, a graduate of Lawrence High School and KU, already has his name on the football stadium. Kansas was expected to allocate $75 million toward the next phase of the renovation of the David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium and additional construction of the surrounding area, called the Gateway District. Kansas athletic director Travis Goff said the remainder of the gift was expected to generate a stream of income for the athletic department that could last for generations. "There is no more generous and impactful Jayhawk, and we are so fortunate to call him a friend and mentor," Goff said. The Gateway District's next phase was expected to add a hotel, additional retail and restaurant spaces, student housing, improved parking and an outdoor event plaza. Booth is founder of global investment firm Dimensional Fund Advisors, which managed $853 billion in assets as of June 30. The longtime benefactor made a $50 million pledge in 2017 to help with the overhaul of the football stadium, which at the time was the largest donation in KU history. He has given several other financial gifts to the university, including $4.3 million to buy and donate James Naismith's original rules of basketball. "KU and Lawrence are a big part of my story, and it means a lot to support the community that invested in me," Booth said. "Philanthropy, like investing, pays dividends over time." The Kansas football team played six games last season in the Kansas City area while the stadium underwent renovations. The Jayhawks are set to play their first game at Memorial Stadium on Aug. 23 against Fresno State. ADVERTISEMENT Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
