Romanian man charged over Keir Starmer ‘arson' attacks
A Russian-speaking student born in Ukraine allegedly conspired to carry out 'aggravated arson' attacks on two London properties and a vehicle linked to Sir Keir Starmer, a court was told.
Stanislav Carpiuc, an aspiring model from Romford, east London, is alleged to have worked with Roman Lavrynovych, a Ukrainian national, and others to set fire to the prime minister's former family home, a property linked to him and a car he previously owned. Counter Terrorism Command led the investigation, given Starmer's position.
Carpiuc, 26, who was born in Ukraine but spent most of his life in Romania, where he had citizenship, has been charged with three counts of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to damage property, endanger life or being reckless as to whether

An easy-going tube driver was caught knitting and watching videos on his phone as he drove commuters around one of the busiest transport networks in the world. Striking footage shows the London Underground operative hard at work on a lion-themed garment as he pulls slowly out of Hendon Central Station in February 2025. The man's phone is also positioned comfortably in front of him so he can watch videos at his leisure. A witness who filmed the spectacle - which took place on a Northern Line train - commented disapprovingly, 'look at him... watching TV, pressing a couple of buttons'. He went on to reference the money the driver earns each year and claimed he can go on strike 'whenever he wants'. The witness later recalled: 'I was so surprised. 'I didn't expect to see someone meant to be at work being so casual about the job. 'Especially because at the time, there were tube strikes going on so it felt mad they were complaining about the job then relaxing on it. The man's phone is also positioned comfortably in front of him so he can watch videos at his leisure 'And, although I don't know how automatic the system is for the tubes, I remember thinking that this person has the passengers' lives in their hands. 'It felt crazy that this driver wouldn't take that more seriously.' Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed the driver in the video was sacked from his job. A spokesman said: 'This video was made earlier in the year. 'We carried out a full investigation and the person involved no longer works at TfL.' Many social media users have taken to TikTok to share their thoughts on the video. One person said: 'He's risking his career for a bit of TV.' Another added: 'The driver shouldn't be doing that, they should be focussing - that's dangerous.' But a number of people offered their support to the tube worker amid the criticism. Someone said: 'What do you want him to be doing? Steering?'

Operation Rising Lion – the offensive against Tehran – has mainly targeted nuclear sites, including destroying the above ground section of Iran's main Natanz nuclear base. Hossein Salami, the leader of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was among the senior Iranian figures reportedly killed in Israel's initial overnight strikes. Some 78 people were killed and more than 320 wounded in Iran, according to its ambassador to the UN. The attack is believed to be the most significant Iran has faced since its war with Iraq in the 1980s. A drug-crazed killer launched a samurai sword rampage hacking a 14-year-old boy to death after hallucinating that his cat was causing 'Armageddon', a court heard yesterday. Marcus Monzo, 37, admitted that he had been using cannabis 'extensively' which had changed his personality and caused a mental health decline. In the grip of a cannabis-induced 'psychotic disorder', the Brazilian is said to have strangled, skinned and deboned his cat, Wizard, before attempting to eat it. Minutes later, Monzo is alleged to have set off with the animal's remains on a baking tray, a number of swords and a ball-bearing gun on a mission to kill, shouting 'does anyone believe in God'. Yesterday Monzo claimed he could not remember killing Daniel Anjorin, 14, as he was walking to school. Nor could he remember ramming a pedestrian with his van or charging into a nearby house and attacking a terrified couple in their bedroom in front of their four-year-old child during the 20-minute rampage in Hainault, east London, on April 30 last year. Yesterday Monzo told the Old Bailey that he had been consumed by 'paranoia and anxiety'. Monzo claimed he stopped smoking cannabis in 2015 because it changed his personality, but he started using cannabis daily again in 2023. But he denied smoking cannabis on the day. In the days before the attack, Monzo said: 'I believed the cat was being used against me and I started receiving guidance, communication... telling me to kill the cat.' He tried to cook Wizard, but he became 'panicked and rushed', believing an event 'like an Armageddon' was occurring. Monzo wept while giving evidence saying he did not intend to harm anybody, adding: 'My memory after I left my home... gradually it becomes very vague and abstract... not very clear.' Monzo denies murder, attempted murder, aggravated burglary by entering a property with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, wounding with intent and having an article with a blade or point, namely a kitchen knife. The trial continues.
