Apple sues YouTuber over iOS 26 leak, says he remotely accessed an employee's phone

In January, YouTuber Jon Prosser began showing off early renderings of Apple's iOS 26 on his channel, FrontPageTech. First was a redesigned camera rendering. In March, he teased Apple's "liquid glass" redesign, before giving a more thorough look in April.
In a lawsuit filed Thursday, Apple says Prosser's leaks were ill-begotten. Apple sued Prosser and another man, Michael Ramacciotti, for misappropriation of trade secrets.
Prosser denied Apple's recounting of the events in an X post.
In the lawsuit, Apple says it received an anonymous tip linking Prosser's leaks to Ethan Lipnik, a software engineer at Apple from 2023-2025. Apple said it received the tip on April 4, months before the software debuted at WWDC, the company's annual conference where it launches products.
Apple alleged that Prosser commissioned Ramacciotti to break into Lipnik's development phone. Ramacciotti was a friend of Lipnik's, the suit says.
Apple says that while Ramaciotti was staying at Lipnik's house, he waited for his friend to leave, obtained the password for his device, and made a video call to Prosser showing off the features.
Apple alleged that Prosser then screen-recorded the video call, recreating the features in new renderings and publishing his copies on YouTube. Apple also says in the lawsuit that Prosser showed the video to other individuals, one of whom noticed Lipnik's apartment in the background, causing them to tip off the company.
"Apple takes great care to protect the secrecy of its unreleased products and features," the lawsuit reads. "These safeguards can only go so far to protect against bad actors determined to steal Apple's trade secrets."
Apple says in the lawsuit that it has since terminated Lipnik's employment. Apple did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. Prosser, Ramacciotti, and Lipnik did not respond to email and social media messages seeking comment. Lawyers for Prosser and Ramacciotti have not yet been identified on the court docket.
"This is not how things went down on my end," Prosser wrote in response to a MacRumors story about the lawsuit on X. "For the record: I certainly did not 'plot' to access anyone's phone and was unaware of the situation playing out."
In its lawsuit, Apple asked the court for unspecified damages and an order preventing Prosser from disclosing other unreleased trade secrets that could have been on the device.

Here's What You Should Know About the Last Major iOS 18 Update Before iOS 26

Before Apple releases iOS 26 this fall, the company will probably release iOS 18.6 in the next few weeks. The company released the iOS 18.6 release candidate on July 21, but it didn't change much on the iPhones of developers and beta testers. While iOS 26 will bring a major redesign to iPhones, the latest beta is filled with bug and security fixes, so developers and beta testers shouldn't expect new features. Apple/Screenshot by CNET Since this is a beta, I recommend downloading it on something other than your primary device. Because this isn't the final version of iOS 18.6, the update might be buggy, and battery life may be affected, so it's best to keep those troubles off your primary device. Note that the beta is not the final version of iOS 18.6, so more features could land on your iPhone when it is released. Apple will likely release iOS 18.6 to the general public in the next few weeks but an exact release date is unclear. However, iOS 18.6 will likely be the last significant iOS 18 update the company releases before it makes iOS 26 available this fall. Here's what to expect from iOS 18.6 when it lands on your iPhone. The release candidate is usually the last beta version of an iOS update before Apple releases the update to the general public. That means Apple could make iOS 18.6 available to the public in the next week. This beta is all about security patches and squashing bugs If you're a developer or beta tester, don't expect much from this beta other than bug and security fixes. After downloading and looking into the iOS 18.6 release candidate, I found no new features or noticeable changes. And that's not surprising considering Apple's iOS release schedule over the years. Apple announced iOS 18 at WWDC 2024 and released iOS 17.6 more than a month later in July. That update was filled with more than 30 important bug fixes and security patches but no new features. Apple recommended that everyone download the update at the time and it was the last major iOS 17 update before the release of iOS 18. Apple did the same thing in July 2023 when it released iOS 16.6. When the tech giant released that update, it was focused on bug fixes and security patches; the next major iOS release was iOS 17. Apple is likely shifting gears and focusing more on iOS 26. In fact, the company has already released three developer betas of that iOS software in preparation for its fall release. There could be more betas before iOS 18.6 is released to the public, so there's plenty of time for Apple to add features or change others -- but I wouldn't count on new features. Apple has not announced when it will release iOS 18.6, but since Apple released the iOS 18.6 release candidate, I expect the company to release the update in about a week. iOS 26 Public Beta Release Date: Exactly When Apple's iPhone Software Will Go Live

Updated July 21 with further details of exactly when the new iPhone software will reach public beta. Apple announced the next big iPhone software back in June, set to go on general release this fall. It's called iOS 26 and its new design has made it highly anticipated. If you're keen to try iOS 26, it's about to become available in the first public beta – and more information has now come to light. Here's what's happening. Apple iOS 26 coming soon Apple announced in June that the release of iOS 26 would first appear as developer betas as usual, with the first public beta set for July. When it reaches general release it will be on the 2025 releases, iPhone 17 series, as well the iPhone 16 sereis and some earlier models. That's the normal schedule, though the public beta routinely arrives around the middle of the month — so the week beginning Monday, July 14 seemed most likely. That's come and gone, of course, but it looks like this week could be the one we're waiting for. In the latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman addressed the question. He had already posted on X that the public beta would land around Wednesday, July 23. Now, he has expanded on this reasoning. 'All indications are that iOS 26 should go into the public beta phase this coming week. This typically happens by the middle of July, so the software is a bit later than usual. Given that iOS 26 is such a significant design overhaul, it makes sense that Apple would want to take a little extra time to get things right,' Gurman said. And there's another reason things seem to be running a little late, which is that instead of using the third developer beta as the basis for the public beta, which is the usual one, 'It seems likely that this public beta will match up with the fourth developer beta version,' this time, Gurman goes on. This means that although it's a little later, it'll be based on a more stable release, assuming Apple is improving its beta software with each release. Since this is for public use, better software will be welcome. There have been tweaks to the Liquid Glass design which is the marquee feature in iOS 26, so maybe developer beta 4/public beta 1, will have something closer to the final look. iOS 26 Public Beta Release Date This week looks most likely: Apple said July and after this week, there are only three days in July left. I believe it will be released the day after the fourth developer beta, so if that lands on Monday, July 21, the public beta will be Tuesday, July 22. Gurman's proposed date of July 23 is also possible, but keep an eye out for dev beta news on Monday. I'll be updating the news, so please check back. Updating this post on Monday, July 21, I can see there's greater clarity of what's happening. I know, it's unusual to make a prediction based on something that hasn't happened, but there's been no fourth developer beta yet. I don't believe it will come today, which makes me think that Tuesday will see the release of the fourth developer beta, which forms the basis for the first public beta. It's theoretically possible that the public beta could land on the same day as the latest developer beta, but I don't buy it. Much more likely is that the public beta will follow the next day, Wednesday, 23 July, exactly as Gurman predicted, or just possibly on Thursday, 24 July, depending on whether there are any last-minute hiccups. Remember, this developer beta cycle began with an unprecedented re-release of the first beta, just days after the initial release. What About The General Release? The expectation of a September release remains in place. 'Does that mean the final software will ultimately ship later than expected,' Gurman asks, adding, 'Probably not, since the developer versions remain on track.'
