David Coote given eight-week ban over Jurgen Klopp comments

Rhyl Journal2 days ago
Coote was charged by the Football Association in June after the comments about Klopp came to light in a video circulated on social media last November.
The FA said he had subsequently admitted the charge.
Coote's misconduct was defined as an aggravated breach under the FA's rules because there was a reference to Klopp's nationality.
An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed an eight-week suspension and mandatory face-to-face education programme on David Coote for a breach of FA Rule E3.

Coote was sacked by Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) last December, a month after the video filmed in July 2020 came to light.
PGMOL said in confirming Coote's dismissal last December that his position had become 'untenable'.
In it, Coote is heard saying it had been 's***' to be fourth official at a Liverpool match in the summer of 2020, describing Klopp as a 'German c***'. He also said Klopp was 'f****** arrogant'.
When the FA charged him over the Klopp comments in June, the governing body said Coote would face no further action in regard to separate allegations of gambling misconduct, which he had strenuously denied. The FA said those allegations had been fully investigated.
Coote was banned by European football's governing body UEFA in February until June 30, 2026 after a different video emerged of him snorting a white powder through a bank note while in Germany for last summer's Euros.
In January, Coote came out as gay in an interview with The Sun and said that a lifelong struggle to hide his sexuality had contributed to the rant about Klopp, and to his drug use.
'My sexuality isn't the only reason that led me to be in that position. But I'm not telling an authentic story if I don't say that I'm gay and that I've had real struggles with hiding that,' he said.
'I hid my emotions as a young ref and I hid my sexuality as well — a good quality as a referee but a terrible quality as a human being. And that's led me to a whole course of behaviours.'
Coote's formal response to the FA charge was detailed in the regulatory commission's written reasons which were published alongside the confirmation of the sanctions imposed.
He accepted his words about Klopp were 'crass, inappropriate and unworthy of the role that he held within the game' and asked the commission to accept that his decision not to attend the hearing was not made out of avoidance, but due to his mental state.
Coote said the words did not respect his true view of Klopp, for whom he had always had a deep professional respect.
The panel wrote: 'DC (Coote) stated that he felt an immense sense of shame. He had lost a career that formed the very core of his identity. He had lost all his income and the media attention had deepened his sense of humiliation and despair.
'He was trying to piece his life back together, from a place of near total collapse.'

Celtic trolled by Scottish Premiership rivals ahead of Parkhead visit as club aim cheeky dig at stadium

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CELTIC have the biggest stadium in Scottish football with an attendance of over 60,000. But that hasn't stopped Premiership rivals Livingston from aiming a cheeky dig at the Hoops on social media - over the stadium's away section. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 1 View of Celtic Park Credit: Kenny Ramsay Celtic host Falkirk tomorrow in the Premier Sports Cup and then face David Martindale's Livi side at the same venue the following Saturday - after the Scottish Champions' first leg against Kairat Almaty. It's not often that Celtic have THREE home games in a row, with the cup and European schedule allowing that to be the case over the coming 10 days. But while that might be a positive for Celtic fans, the same can't be said for away supporters, according to Livingston's latest social media post. The Lions appeared to aim a cheeky and subtle dig at the Scottish champions with a post on X ahead of Saturday's big showdown in the East End of Glasgow. Like most football clubs, the Almondvale side stuck out a post tonight ahead of the game with ticket information for fans who plan on attending. But it wasn't just any old post as they also took a swipe at the Hoops' infamous away end in the graphic they uploaded. The club used an image from behind the steel pillar at Celtic Park which countless away fans have been left furious by in recent years - after having a restricted view of the pitch. It's a sight away supporters - who have visited the stadium previously - are well aware of and it's fair to say the post has gone down well with fans of other Scottish clubs. Celtic fans, though, haven't taken the tongue-in-cheek post as well as others. It has went down a storm on social media with well over 200,000 users viewing it already. Livingston boss David Martindale opens his heart on life before, during and after prison.. and the managers he admires most And reacting to the post, one fan wrote: "Absolutely top trolling of Celtic. This is the exact view many away fans get when visiting Celtic." Another said: "It's funny cos it's true. The most restricted views in world football." A third commented: "Amazing. Truly the worst stadium for restricted views in Scotland if not the UK." In a statement on Livingston's website, they revealed fans who wish to be seated with a "non-restricted view" of the game will be charged £36, while those seated behind the pillar will need to pay £33. Donald Trump 'glitches' as he speaks in Oval Office ahead of Putin summit

Donald Trump appeared to momentarily glitch while taking questions during an Oval Office briefing today, pausing mid-sentence and repeating himself before launching into a rant about crime. The US President claimed crime in Washington is the "worst it's ever been," describing the situation as "tragic" and an "epidemic". Asked about his meeting with Vladimir Putin tomorrow, Trump said it will "save a lot of lives." Tonight's briefing, held to mark the 90th anniversary of the Social Security Act, also saw Trump vow to protect social security before gloating about "ending Biden's inflation nightmare" and earning hundreds of billions in tarrifs on goods. Asked if he was ready to give Putin access to rare earth minerals to end the war in Ukraine, Trump replied the "big, important meeting" is "going to save a lot of lives", but an even "more important" meeting - with Putin and Zelensky, and possibly European leaders - will be held after. "We'll see if they can get along," he says of the leaders, adding that he believes the pair can "make peace". The US President, who will host the Russian dictator to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, earlier said he thought Putin was ready to make a deal, but then warned there was a 25% chance that the summit may fail. "If it's a bad meeting, I'm not calling anybody. I'm going home," he told Fox News Radio. "But if it's a good meeting, I'm going to call President Zelensky and the European leaders." Trump also said Putin would face severe consequences if he were to walk away from their Alaska summit without a stop to the fighting. When pushed on what these consequences would be, he said: "I don't have to say." He added: "If I do not get the necessary answers during the meeting with Putin, there will be no next meeting." His comments came just hours after Ukrainian President Zelensky told Trump the Russian leader was bluffing about his willingness to end the war. Zelensky said in a joint briefing in Berlin with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz: "I told the US president and all our European colleagues that Putin is bluffing. He is trying to apply pressure before the meeting in Alaska along all parts of the Ukrainian front. Russia is trying to show that it can occupy all of Ukraine."
