Eddie Murphy Defends ‘Norbit' After Rumors It Cost Him Oscar For ‘Dreamgirls': 'Ain't That Bad'
The Oscar nominee recently defended his 2007 comedy Norbit as a 'funny' movie, following theories that the Brian Robbins-directed movie cost him the golden statuette for Dreamgirls (2006).

'I love Norbit. Norbit came out right after I got that Oscar nomination. There were articles like, 'How can he get an Oscar, he did this?' They're two different movies,' he explained to Complex.
'I wrote Norbit with my brother, Charlie [Murphy], and we think Norbit is funny,' added Murphy. 'Here's the thing with Norbit; it came out and they gave me Razzie Awards for worst actress, worst actor and worst actor of the decade. And I was like, 'Come on now, shit ain't that bad.' I like Norbit. To this day, I like Norbit. There's stuff in Norbit that makes me laugh.'
Norbit starred Murphy as the titular mild-mannered pushover who rekindles a romance with his childhood sweetheart Kate (Thandiwe Newton) after he's forced to marry the overbearing Rasputia (also Murphy). In addition to the aforementioned Razzies, Murphy also won Worst Supporting Actor for his performance as Chinese orphanage owner Mr. Wong.
And despite the movie's 9% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Norbit opened at the top of the box office and surpassed $159 million worldwide. Murphy's Rasputia and Mr. Wong transformations also earned the movie an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup.
Playing James 'Thunder' Early in the Bill Condon-helmed movie musical adaptation of Broadway's Dreamgirls, Murphy earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, which was ultimately awarded to Alan Arkin for Little Miss Sunshine.

Brandon Blackstock's final photograph shows him smiling alongside pregnant daughter
Brandon Blackstock's final photograph shows him smiling alongside his pregnant daughter Savannah Lee. The 48-year-old talent manager, who lived in Montana, died last month following a three-year battle with cancer, leaving his singer wife Kelly Clarkson devastated. Now, in what is believed to be the final photograph taken of him before his death, Brandon has been revealed to have appeared happy before his passing. His daughter captioned the snap by saying she was 'back home to the mountains and my daddy'. A statement announcing Brandon's death said he had been diagnosed with melanoma and had recently entered hospice care before 'passing away peacefully' surrounded by family. On 20 July, Savannah, 23, posted what is thought to be the final image of him on Facebook. In it, both she and Brandon wore casual black clothing and smiled for the camera. Brandon rested one arm around his daughter's shoulders while propping one leg on a picnic bench, wearing a baseball cap and Ugg boots. Savannah, who is expecting her second child, posed with one hand in her pocket, leaning into her father. A few weeks earlier, Savannah – who has a three-year-old son – announced on Instagram she was pregnant again. She said: 'My little girl will be making her arrival at the beginning of January. 'This journey has been so special full of peace, excitement, and so much grace.' She also thanked God for being 'so faithful' and said: 'His kindness in this season has left (us) in awe.' Brandon shared Savannah and her brother Seth Blackstock with his first wife, Melissa Ashworth, whom he married in 2001 and divorced in 2012. He was later married to Kelly Clarkson from 2013 to 2022, with whom he had two children – daughter River, 11, and son Remington, nine. A spokesperson said about his death: 'It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. 'He bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time.' The day before Brandon's death, Kelly, 43, announced she was cancelling the remaining August dates of her Las Vegas residency, saying she needed to be 'fully present' for their children as her ex-husband was 'ill'. The former couple's last red carpet appearance together was in January 2020 at the Critics' Choice Awards. Clarkson filed for divorce five months later.

Will The Gilded Age Stage a Crossover With Downton Abbey in Season 4? ‘There's an Opportunity To,' EP Says
With the third season of The Gilded Age ending this Sunday, and the third Downton Abbey movie hitting theaters next month, we couldn't help but wonder… when the heck are these two Julian Fellowes-created franchises finally going to collide? It's a question we've been asking since The Gilded Age first premiered in 2022, but now that Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) has married into British nobility, the time feels more appropriate than ever. Come on, who didn't get Downton vibes from the Duke's house? More from TVLine The Gilded Age Boss Breaks Down Oscar's Tragic Outburst - Does Agnes Know the Truth About John Adams? The Gilded Age Shocker: Morgan Spector Was 'Thrilled' by Episode 7's Jaw-Dropping Ending House of the Dragon Adds Annie Shapero as Alysanne 'Black Aly' Blackwood in Season 3 'Well, obviously there's an opportunity to [stage a crossover], because they are both in England,' Fellowes tells TVLine. 'Things like the shooting season or whatever would incorporate many great houses for all of these families, as they would travel around England. We can bring about a conjunction whenever we wish, really, but we haven't got one planned yet, so we'll have to see.' To be fair, this is a much more encouraging answer than executive producer Gareth Neame gave us when we spoke with him back in The Gilded Age's first season. '[A crossover is] not in the thinking at all,' Neame says. 'It's a separate universe, but they're both fictions set in the 1880s. Downton Abbey, in its own fiction, was definitely there. A younger version of the Maggie Smith character would be living there, I guess. But it's not really planned.' A younger version of Smith's iconic Dowager Countess? Hey, he said it, not us. Wouldn't it be fun, if even as a fleeting cameo, to catch a glimpse of someone from the Crawley family on The Gilded Age? The first season of Downton Abbey began with the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, meaning it takes place less than 30 years after the current season of The Gilded Age, which would put the Countess somewhere in her 40s. Just something to think about. Gilded Age fans, would you like to see the show collide with the world of Downton Abbey, even if it's just a nod? Drop a comment with your thoughts below. Jamie Lee Curtis calls out film critic's 'harsh' review of 'Freakier Friday'
Jamie Lee Curtis is slamming a negative review of her new movie "Freakier Friday." After Time magazine posted an Instagram caption with its film critic Stephanie Zacharek's take on the beloved 2003 film's sequel (in theaters now), the Oscar winner slammed the reviewer's opinion. The Aug. 8 caption said Zacharek wrote that "no one, as far as we know, actually asked Disney for a sequel to 2003's buoyant, surprisingly unsyrupy generation-gap comedy 'Freaky Friday.'" In response, Curtis commented that the review "SEEMS a TAD HARSH. SOME people LOVE it. Me being one." Fashion designer Brandon Maxwell defended the film in the comments, writing "I really loved this movie ❤️" while online travel agency Expedia joked that Zacharek's review "sounds like someone needs a vacation 👀 May we suggest a digital detox to Nantucket spending your day taking in charming streets and peaceful beaches?" 'Parent Trap' reunion! Lindsay Lohan explains Elaine Hendrix's 'Freakier Friday' cameo The new film picks up over two decades after angsty high school student Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) swapped bodies with her mom, psychologist Tess Coleman (Curtis). This time, Anna is mom to a teenage daughter of her own, Harper Coleman (Julia Butters). And Tess is now a podcast host and overbearing grandmother. Chad Michael Murray reprises his role as Jake, a motorcycle riding heartthrob. In her review, Zacharek also wrote that the sequel "is a movie that manages to humiliate everybody." "And it appears to exist largely for one reason: to grift off the fondness many adults have for the original, even though the sequel has none of that picture's breezy, observant charm," she added. In a recent interview with USA TODAY, the 66-year-old Curtis opened up about returning to her matriarchal character over 20 years later. "There was no possible way we could have done a sequel to 'Freaky Friday' until Lindsay (who is 39) was old enough chronologically to be the mother of a 15-year-old," Curtis said. "So this just needed a time to cook." Curtis realized Lohan had finally aged into the role during the release of "Halloween Ends" in 2022. "I counted on my fingers, and I was like, 'How old is she?'" Curtis said. "I think she was 35 at the time. I was like: 'Oh, wait a minute! She could've had a baby at 20!' " "I picked up the phone and called (Disney CEO) Bob Iger and said, 'I'm just letting you know I've been around the world and the only thing people want to know is when is there a "Freaky Friday" (sequel) and Lindsay is old enough to have a 15-year-old,'" Curtis revealed.
