India Gears Up for 79th Independence Day Celebrations with Pride and Honour

Hans Indiaa day ago
India will commemorate its 79th Independence Day on 15 August 2025, marking seventy-eight years since the country broke free from almost two hundred years of British colonial rule. The day continues to stand as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and resilience, honouring the countless individuals who fought tirelessly for the nation's freedom. It also serves as a reminder of the journey India has undertaken as a democratic republic, committed to unity, diversity, and progress.
The celebrations across the country will reflect the patriotic spirit of the occasion. From bustling metropolitan cities to remote rural villages, the tricolour will be hoisted in schools, government buildings, and public spaces. Citizens will participate in parades, cultural performances, patriotic songs, and community activities that reinforce the values of freedom and national pride. Educational institutions will conduct interactive workshops, debates, and exhibitions to help younger generations understand the historical significance of the freedom movement and the ideals embedded in the Constitution.
The main national ceremony will be held at the iconic Red Fort in Delhi. Proceedings will begin with a ceremonial Guard of Honour presented to the Prime Minister by the Armed Forces and the Delhi Police. Following this, the national flag will be unfurled, accompanied by the singing of the national anthem and a traditional 21-gun salute. Adding to the grandeur, helicopters of the Indian Air Force will shower flower petals over the gathering, creating a moment of collective pride and joy. The Prime Minister's address to the nation will serve as a focal point of the celebrations, reflecting on the country's achievements, challenges, and vision for the future. The event will conclude with another rendition of the national anthem and the release of tri-coloured balloons, symbolising freedom and unity.
While an official theme for this year's Independence Day has not yet been declared, it is expected to highlight the enduring values of unity, patriotism, and the legacy of the nation's freedom fighters. In recent years, themes have also underscored progress, innovation, and the role of citizens in shaping a better future—ideas likely to be woven into this year's observance as well.
In a notable initiative, the government will extend special recognition to 50 sanitation workers from Delhi who have shown exceptional dedication to maintaining cleanliness and hygiene. Each of Delhi's zonal offices has been tasked with nominating five workers—three women and two men—along with their spouses, for consideration. The final list will be determined based on individual performance and contributions to their communities. The Delhi Environmental Management Services (DEMS) will serve as the nodal agency overseeing the nominations and compiling the guest list for the Ministry of Defence.
This year's Independence Day is expected to blend tradition with contemporary relevance, paying homage to the sacrifices of the past while celebrating the progress of the present. As preparations advance nationwide, the day promises to inspire unity, pride, and renewed commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive India.

Nagpur slaughterhouses and meat shops to remain shut on Independence Day and Janmashtami

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Tuesday announced that all slaughterhouses and meat shops within city limits would remain closed on Independence Day (Friday) and Janmashtami (Saturday). 'All slaughterhouses and meat shops within NMC limits shall remain shut on these days, and action will be taken by the civic flying squad against violators,' stated a notice issued by Rajesh Bhagat, Deputy Commissioner, Department of Solid Waste Management. The notice was issued in accordance with a Maharashtra Government directive, officials said, adding that the decision for the Janmashtami closure of meat shops was approved by the municipal commissioner. On Monday, the Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) ordered the closure of all slaughterhouses and meat shops on August 15. The restriction will apply to all licensed butchers dealing in goats, sheep, chicken, and large animals and remain in force from midnight on August 14. The Opposition has criticised the move, with the NCP (SP)'s Jitendra Awhad asking if residents are being told what to eat on Independence Day and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray calling for the KDMC commissioner's suspension. 'Who is the commissioner to tell us what to eat and what not to? Bridges are collapsing, roads are in terrible shape, and instead of fixing them, the administration is busy banning food,' Thackeray said. Awhad also said he planned to hold a mutton party on Friday in protest against the restrictions. Meanwhile, Vishwanath Bhoir, the Kalyan MLA from the ruling Shiv Sena, sought to defend the decision, arguing that being vegetarian for one day should not be an issue.

The date holds deep emotional significance for Indians, commemorating the end of nearly two centuries of British colonial rule in 1947 and the birth of a sovereign India is not alone in cherishing August 15. Beyond our borders, a handful of nations also recognize this date as a turning point in their histories — each story shaped by unique struggles, political shifts, and moments of are five countries that, in their own ways, share this special date with both North and South Korea, August 15 is celebrated as Gwangbokjeol or Liberation Day — the day in 1945 when Japanese occupation came to an end after 35 years. While liberation brought hope, it also marked the beginning of division. A temporary arrangement between the Soviet Union and the United States to manage the Korean Peninsula led to its split along the 38th parallel. Three years later, this political divide solidified into two separate states, eventually sparking the Korean War in 1950. Yet, despite decades of separation, both nations still commemorate August 15 as the moment they reclaimed their formally declared independence from Britain on August 15, 1971, following a United Nations survey confirming the will of its people. However, unlike India, the day is not widely celebrated. Instead, Bahrain's National Day falls on December 16, marking the late Emir Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa's ascension to the throne. While August 15 is not a public holiday, it remains an important milestone in Bahrain's Republic of the Congo, once part of French Equatorial Africa, became independent from France on August 15, 1960. The capital, Brazzaville, comes alive each year with parades, music, and community gatherings to celebrate Congolese National Day. It is worth noting that this is not the same as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which marks its independence from Belgium on June Democratic Republic of the Congo's independence from Belgium took effect on June 30, 1960, but the official ceremony for the Republic of Congo (its western neighbour) on August 15, 1960, often creates confusion between the two. While the DRC observes its own date, this shared mid-August history reflects a wider wave of decolonisation that swept Africa in the Liechtenstein, August 15 is not an independence day in the traditional sense but the country's official National Day. The date was chosen in 1940 to combine two significant events — the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, a major Catholic holiday, and the birthday of Prince Franz Josef II, who was born on August 16. Citizens gather in Vaduz, the capital, to attend festivities near the royal castle, and the day ends with fireworks lighting up the alpine India, August 15 is a day of pride, remembrance, and unity. For others, it represents liberation, nationhood, or a symbolic national moment. Whether marked with grand parades, religious observances, or quiet historical reflection, the date remains a shared chapter in the world's calendar of freedom.
