Nagpur slaughterhouses and meat shops to remain shut on Independence Day and Janmashtami
'All slaughterhouses and meat shops within NMC limits shall remain shut on these days, and action will be taken by the civic flying squad against violators,' stated a notice issued by Rajesh Bhagat, Deputy Commissioner, Department of Solid Waste Management.
The notice was issued in accordance with a Maharashtra Government directive, officials said, adding that the decision for the Janmashtami closure of meat shops was approved by the municipal commissioner.
On Monday, the Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) ordered the closure of all slaughterhouses and meat shops on August 15. The restriction will apply to all licensed butchers dealing in goats, sheep, chicken, and large animals and remain in force from midnight on August 14.
The Opposition has criticised the move, with the NCP (SP)'s Jitendra Awhad asking if residents are being told what to eat on Independence Day and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray calling for the KDMC commissioner's suspension.
'Who is the commissioner to tell us what to eat and what not to? Bridges are collapsing, roads are in terrible shape, and instead of fixing them, the administration is busy banning food,' Thackeray said.
Awhad also said he planned to hold a mutton party on Friday in protest against the restrictions.
Meanwhile, Vishwanath Bhoir, the Kalyan MLA from the ruling Shiv Sena, sought to defend the decision, arguing that being vegetarian for one day should not be an issue.

The four-day break includes a restricted holiday for Chehlum on August 14, Independence Day celebrations on August 15, Janmashtami holiday on August 16, and Sunday on August 17. Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) of Noida, Rahul Panwar, clarified that private schools can decide whether to remain open on August 14. 'Aug 14 is a restricted holiday. If any private school wants to remain open, they can,' he said. However, on Aug 15, all schools will reopen briefly for flag hoisting and Independence Day celebrations, said the official. Officials shared details of the Independence Day programme. "Majorly, Independence Day celebrations will take place in higher secondary schools on Thursday and Friday. Saturday is a holiday for Janmashtami," said Dharmendra Kumar, district inspector of schools (DIOS) of Ghaziabad, TOI reported. Kumar also mentioned the other necessary instructions to all schools regarding flag hoisting, cultural events, and safety protocols. On the other hand, another school teacher from Ghaziabad encouraged the announcement of a day break in school and said, "It's good that it's a long weekend. It gives everyone time to relax and recharge. Teachers, too, need some rest in the middle of a hectic term."

PUDUCHERRY: Director General of Police Shalini Singh has stressed the need for real-time intelligence sharing, institutionalised coordination between bordering police stations, and proactive social media monitoring to detect and deter potential threats. Speaking at an inter-state coordination meeting in Puducherry on Tuesday to review security and law and order arrangements for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, she also underscored the importance of advance anti-sabotage checks and robust crowd management plans to prevent panic or stampede-like situations during public gatherings. The meeting, held in hybrid mode from the Police Headquarters Conference Hall, saw the participation of senior officers from Puducherry and Tamil Nadu Police. Among those present were DIGP (Law & Order), Puducherry; SSPs of various wings; DIGP, Villupuram; SPs of Villupuram and Cuddalore; and representatives from the Coast Guard and Intelligence Bureau. Officers from Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur joined via video conferencing, along with SSP and SDPOs from Karaikal. To ensure incident-free celebrations, officials agreed on maintaining high alert deployments and ensuring swift information sharing across state borders. Plans were drawn up to set up joint border pickets, install additional CCTV surveillance, and strengthen coastal intelligence through close engagement with the local fishing community. In a key development, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Puducherry Police and the National Security Guard (NSG) to bolster counterterrorism capabilities in the Union Territory. The agreement will focus on training, joint exercises, and exchange of best practices. Officials said the coordinated measures mark a significant step towards ensuring a safe and secure Independence Day in Puducherry and neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu.

US to cooperate with Pakistan over critical minerals, hydrocarbons: Secretary of State Rubio
WASHINGTON: The US government on Wednesday stated that it is "looking forward" to strengthening its cooperation with Pakistan in areas of critical minerals and hydrocarbons, with a renewed focus on economic cooperation in other emerging sectors. Announcing its intent in a congratulatory message on Pakistan's Independence Day, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a statement, highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between the two nations. "On behalf of the United States, I extend our warm congratulations to the people of Pakistan as they celebrate their Independence Day on August 14," Rubio said in the statement issued by US Department of State. He also acknowledged Pakistan's engagement with the US on key fronts, particularly counterterrorism and trade. "The United States deeply appreciates Pakistan's engagement on counterterrorism and trade. We look forward to exploring new areas of economic cooperation, including critical minerals and hydrocarbons, and fostering dynamic business partnerships which will promote a prosperous future for Americans and Pakistanis," the statement further read. Earlier in July, US President Donald Trump announced a trade deal with Pakistan, touting a joint initiative to develop oil reserves in the country and even floated the idea that "some day" Islamabad might sell oil to New Delhi. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the US and Pakistan are currently in the process of selecting the oil company for the partnership. "We have just concluded a Deal with the Country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves. We are in the process of choosing the Oil Company that will lead this Partnership. Who knows, maybe they'll be selling Oil to India some day!" Trump stated. Meanwhile, the Trump administration had also announced the lowest tariff rates for Pakistani goods to the US in South Asia in his new tariff plans announced earlier this month, with 19 percent imposed on Islamabad. India, on the other hand, faced a 25 percent tariff under the new plan. Trump later announced an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods to the US, bringing the total to 50 percent, due to India's continued oil purchases from Russia. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has slammed the US's move to impose additional tariffs, calling it "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable", and further noted that New Delhi would take "all actions necessary to protect its national interests." Notably, Pakistan's Army Chief Asim Munir visited the US for the second time in less than two months, where he reportedly said Pakistan could use nuclear weapons to take down India and "half the world" in the event of an existential threat during an event in Florida. The trip comes after a private luncheon with Trump in June, during which the Pakistan Army Chief recommended Trump's name for the Nobel Peace Prize.
