US to cooperate with Pakistan over critical minerals, hydrocarbons: Secretary of State Rubio

WASHINGTON: The US government on Wednesday stated that it is "looking forward" to strengthening its cooperation with Pakistan in areas of critical minerals and hydrocarbons, with a renewed focus on economic cooperation in other emerging sectors.
Announcing its intent in a congratulatory message on Pakistan's Independence Day, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a statement, highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between the two nations.
"On behalf of the United States, I extend our warm congratulations to the people of Pakistan as they celebrate their Independence Day on August 14," Rubio said in the statement issued by US Department of State.
He also acknowledged Pakistan's engagement with the US on key fronts, particularly counterterrorism and trade.
"The United States deeply appreciates Pakistan's engagement on counterterrorism and trade. We look forward to exploring new areas of economic cooperation, including critical minerals and hydrocarbons, and fostering dynamic business partnerships which will promote a prosperous future for Americans and Pakistanis," the statement further read.
The message comes at a time when Washington is actively seeking to further its ties with India's terror-harbouring neighbour.
Earlier in July, US President Donald Trump announced a trade deal with Pakistan, touting a joint initiative to develop oil reserves in the country and even floated the idea that "some day" Islamabad might sell oil to New Delhi.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the US and Pakistan are currently in the process of selecting the oil company for the partnership.
"We have just concluded a Deal with the Country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves. We are in the process of choosing the Oil Company that will lead this Partnership. Who knows, maybe they'll be selling Oil to India some day!" Trump stated.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration had also announced the lowest tariff rates for Pakistani goods to the US in South Asia in his new tariff plans announced earlier this month, with 19 percent imposed on Islamabad.
India, on the other hand, faced a 25 percent tariff under the new plan. Trump later announced an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods to the US, bringing the total to 50 percent, due to India's continued oil purchases from Russia.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has slammed the US's move to impose additional tariffs, calling it "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable", and further noted that New Delhi would take "all actions necessary to protect its national interests."
Notably, Pakistan's Army Chief Asim Munir visited the US for the second time in less than two months, where he reportedly said Pakistan could use nuclear weapons to take down India and "half the world" in the event of an existential threat during an event in Florida. The trip comes after a private luncheon with Trump in June, during which the Pakistan Army Chief recommended Trump's name for the Nobel Peace Prize.

CM Stalin hails INDIA bloc's V-P nominee Sudershan Reddy

CHENNAI: Congratulating B Sudershan Reddy on being chosen as the vice-presidential candidate of INDIA bloc, DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin said, 'At a time when our institutions are under strain, his candidature strengthens our collective resolve to safeguard democracy and protect the spirit of the Constitution.' Although there was pressure from the NDA alliance leaders in the state to support their vice-presidential candidate CP Radhakrishnan, a Tamil, Stalin gave a strong reason for backing Reddy. He reasoned, 'The secular-spirited people of Tamil Nadu have, in successive elections, overwhelmingly voted for the MPs and MLAs of the DMK alliance to defend the rights of the state and safeguard the Constitution. Hence, the decision to support the INDIA bloc candidate stands as both a reaffirmation of the people's faith and a mark of respect for their mandate and sentiment.' Emphasising the need to support Reddy, he said, 'All the independent institutions that were meant to safeguard Indian democracy have been turned into subsidiary bodies of the ruling party, and the very Constitution itself is in danger. In such a situation, the responsibility before us is to support only one who believes in India's fundamental ideals of secularism, federalism, social justice, and unity in diversity.' Stalin further said, 'Reddy is the right choice as he stands opposed to anti-federalism, authoritarianism, and the trend of spreading hatred,' adding that Reddy has faith in the Constitution and in the principles of federalism, pluralism, social justice, and linguistic rights.

India won't initiate normalisation of ties, onus on Pakistan: Shashi Tharoor

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has said India will no longer take the first step in normalising relations with Pakistan, citing a long history of 'betrayals' and urging the neighbouring country to demonstrate genuine intent by dismantling terror networks operating from its soil. Speaking at the launch of 'Whither India-Pakistan Relations Today?', an anthology edited by former ambassador Surendra Kumar, Tharoor said that any future dialogue depends on Pakistan's willingness to crack down on terror outfits. 'Given Pakistan's record, the onus is on them,' Tharoor said. " Why can't they shut down these terror camps? Everyone knows where they are. The UN even lists them.' Citing past Indian outreach efforts from Nehru's 1950 pact with Liaqat Ali Khan, Vajpayee's 1999 Lahore visit, to PM Modi's surprise 2015 stopover, Tharoor said all were followed by hostilities or terror attacks. Referring to the 2008 Mumbai attacks, he noted that India had shared 'overwhelming evidence' of Pakistani involvement, but 'not one mastermind has been prosecuted'. He said India showed restraint then, but repeated provocations led to actions like the 2016 surgical strikes and 'Operation Sindoor'. Tharoor also dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump's claims of brokering peace post Operation Sindoor. 'It was the strikes on May 9-10 and the successful interception of Pakistani missiles that led to their DGMO calling for a ceasefire, not Trump,' he said.

White House launches TikTok account as Trump's deadline to ban app looms

The first video posted by the White House features a montage of Trump and other administration officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Bloomberg The White House launched its own TikTok account on Tuesday, the latest signal of support as President Donald Trump continues to seek a sale of the social video app's US operations from Chinese company ByteDance Ltd. The first video posted by the White House features a montage of Trump and other administration officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and encourages viewers to follow the account. 'The Trump administration is committed to communicating the historic successes President Trump has delivered to the American people with as many audiences and platforms as possible,' White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Reuters, which first reported the creation of the account. Trump has embraced TikTok after his latest presidential campaign, crediting the platform with helping him to reach young voters who backed his candidacy at higher rates compared to his previous efforts. It's a stark departure from his first term, when the president signed an executive order attempting to ban the app if ByteDance didn't divest its US operations over concerns it could endanger users' personal data. Lawmakers subsequently passed legislation forcing the sale of the app's US operations during former President Joe Biden's administration. But Trump has repeatedly delayed implementation of provisions in the law mandating the shutdown of the service as he's sought to broker a deal. It's not clear how the White House is complying with a separate law, passed during the Biden administration, which bans the use of TikTok on government devices except for law enforcement and national security research and activities. The legislation also requires the development of risk mitigation actions for any authorized use. In the Biden administration, TikTok was banned from officials' government phones — including at the White House — though the former president's campaign created an account using a staffer's personal device. In June, Trump said he had identified a buyer but that he believed a sale would be contingent on approval from Beijing and Chinese President Xi Jinping. 'We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way. I think I'll need probably China approval and I think President Xi will probably do it,' Trump said in an interview with Fox News. 'It's a group of very wealthy people.' A deal was said to be close earlier this year, led by a consortium of US investors including Oracle Corp., Blackstone Inc. and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. But Trump has said he believes that his implementation of tariffs on Chinese goods has complicated the effort. Under Trump's latest executive order, ByteDance has until Sept. 17 to divest, though the president has extended the deadline repeatedly.
