Congress leader Harish Rawat slams state administration over Rudraprayag bus incident
Nainital (Uttarakhand) [India], June 26 (ANI): Congress leader and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat on Thursday criticised the state administration for failing to learn from previous incidents after a tragic bus accident in Rudraprayag left several dead and injured.
Speaking to ANI, Harish Rawat said, 'Such incidents happened last year too. It seems that our system is not learning from them. The state's prestige is linked to this yatra. We should consider that even a small mistake or policy error of the administration tarnishes the state's prestige.'
At least three people were killed and eight others injured when a bus carrying 20 passengers collided with another bus and plunged into the Alaknanda River near the Gholthir area of Rudraprayag district during early hours today, officials said.
Uttarakhand Secretary for Disaster Management, Vinod Kumar Suman, confirmed the incident and said rescue operations were ongoing.
'There were 20 passengers in the bus that swept away in the river in the Gholthir area of Rudraprayag district. We were able to save 8 people, 3 people died, the rest are being searched,' he told ANI.
He further added, 'Among the passengers were a driver from Haridwar, 7 people from Rajasthan, 3 people from Madhya Pradesh, 7 people from Gujarat and 2 people from Maharashtra.'
Rescue teams from SDRF, NDRF, and DDRF, along with the district administration, immediately rushed to the scene. Local residents also helped in the rescue operation. Some passengers jumped from the bus before it fell into the river and were rescued and taken to the district hospital. Critically injured victims were airlifted to AIIMS Rishikesh.
Meanwhile, due to continuous rainfall disrupting the Sonprayag-Munkatia route on the Kedarnath Yatra path, the Rudraprayag district administration safely evacuated 1,269 pilgrims--833 men and 436 women.

The bus involved in the accident was travelling from Rudraprayag to Badrinath when it lost control near a sharp turn and fell approximately 300 meters into the river.
Earlier in the day, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the incident.
'The news of a tempo traveller falling into a river in Rudraprayag district is deeply tragic. Relief and rescue operations are being conducted on a war footing by SDRF and other rescue teams. I am in constant contact with the local administration regarding this matter. I pray to God for everyone's safety,' CM Dhami said in a post on X.
The SDRF has also launched a search operation near the Srinagar Garhwal dam, about 40 kilometres from the crash site, as strong river currents may have carried the victims downstream. (ANI)

Three pilgrims die, eight injured, nine missing as bus falls into Alaknanda
Dehradun, Jun 26 (UNI) Three pilgrims died, eight others were seriously injured and nine went missing as a bus going towards Badrimath Shrine fell into a 300 metres gorge in Rudraprayag on Thursday morning. Chances of survival of the missing pilgrims seems to be remote, said State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) officials engaged in rescue and search operation. Rescuers recovered three dead bodies while search for nine missing persons from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand was going on. Eight injured pilgrims were rushed to a nearby hospital. Tragedy occurred near State Bank Turn, at Gholtir area in Rudraprayag when a 31-seater Char Dham pilgrimage bus UK 08 PA 7444, went out of control and plunged into Alaknanda River, nearly 300 meters down the road. The bus was going from Rudraprayag to Badrinath carrying passengers. Bus driver Sumit Kumar hailed from Haridwar. As many as 20 passengers were seated in the bus when the ill fated vehicle met the tragedy. SDRF officials informed that some of the pilgrims were thrown out of the bus as it skidded into the gorge before going in the river. They were rescued from the gorge by SDRF, NDRF, local public, police and revenue department teams. Around eight injured passengers were rescued and sent to Rudraprayag district hospital for medical aid. Some of the critically injured pilgrims were airlifted to All Iindia Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh. Besides rescuing eight injured, SDRF and other rescue teams at the accident site recovered two dead identified as 42 year old Vishal Soni from Rajgarh in Madhya Pradesh and 17 years old Dirmi from Surat in Gujarat. Third body, that of a woman pilgrim was taken out of the river near Dhari Devi temple far down the stream where accident occurred. As per SDRF she was one of missing persons but her identity could not be confirmed. Injured pilgrims included Deepika Soni, 42, Hemlata Soni, 45, both from Rajasthan, Ishwar Soni, 46, Bhavna Soni, 43, and 7-year old girl Bhavya Soni, all three from Surat in Gujarat. Apart from them 10 year old boy Parth Soni, from Rajgarh, Madhya Pradesh, bus driver Sumit Kumar, 23, from Bairagi Camp in Haridwar and Amita Soni, 49, a resident of Mira Road, Maharashtra were also sent to hospital for treatment. Passengers stated to be missing were 28 years old Ravi Bhavsar, Lalit Kumar Soni, 48, Sanjay Soni,55, Chetna Soni, 52 and 77-year old Sushila Soni all residents of Udaipur, Rajasthan. Mauli Soni, 19, Mayuri,24, resident of Surat, Gujarat and 12 years old Cheshta all residents of Surat, Gujarat, Gauri Soni, 41, from Rajgarh Madhya Pradesh and Katta Ranjana Ashok,59, from Mira Road, Maharashtra were also informed by the SDRF as missing. Search and rescue operation was going on at the time of filing the story. SDRF claimed that rescue operation was challenging due to the strong river current, harsh terrain, bad weather and deep gorge. Expressing his grief over the accident chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that news of a bus carrying passengers plunging into a river in Rudraprayag was extremely sad "Relief and rescue operation is going on a war footing by SDRF and other agencies.I am in constant contact with the local administration regarding this matter. NDRF to launch annual Mountaineering Program to boost disaster response in hills: DG Piyush Anand
New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has decided to make its mountaineering program an annual exercise to strengthen rescue preparedness in high-altitude areas, the force's Director General Piyush Anand announced on Thursday. Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the third NDRF Mountaineering Expedition, 'Shaurya', Anand said the move aimed to train rescuers to tackle disasters in India's mountainous regions, where such emergencies are becoming more frequent and severe. 'We have decided to launch this campaign (Mountaineering Program) annually... Natural disasters are common in the hilly states of India, and their frequency and severity are increasing,' Anand said. He highlighted the urgent need for operational readiness in terrains that are prone to landslides, avalanches, earthquakes, and flash floods. The mountaineering expeditions, he said, were crucial in ensuring that NDRF teams remain physically and mentally prepared for complex rescue missions at high altitudes. 'Our team must be prepared as first responders. This step is to improve our readiness,' he added. Referring to the most recent training expedition, the DG said it helped NDRF personnel gain hands-on experience in harsh conditions. 'This was our third expedition, so our rescuers understood that if we had to carry out a rescue operation in high-altitude areas tomorrow, we would be able to handle it without any issues,' he said. Meanwhile, on June 16, Union Home Minister Amit Shah applauded the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), National Disaster Response Forces (NDRF) and Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) for bringing India closer to becoming a global leader in disaster management. Addressing the Conference held at the Relief Commissioners of States, Union Territories and Disaster Response Forces, Shah said 'It is a matter of joy for all of us that within 10 years, these three institutions, NDMA, NDRF and CDRI, have brought India closer to becoming a global leader in the field of disaster management. NDMA has done a great job in structuring policy matters, doing research work, delivering articles of various types of studies to the people, making many apps and overall coordination of policy has created its image in the entire country, has also earned fame and respect. SDRF has also played a huge role in the structure of I say that India is on the verge of becoming a global leader, then we have also gained a lot of fame and acceptance at the global level through the CDRI...'
