NDRF to launch annual Mountaineering Program to boost disaster response in hills: DG Piyush Anand
New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has decided to make its mountaineering program an annual exercise to strengthen rescue preparedness in high-altitude areas, the force's Director General Piyush Anand announced on Thursday.
Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the third NDRF Mountaineering Expedition, 'Shaurya', Anand said the move aimed to train rescuers to tackle disasters in India's mountainous regions, where such emergencies are becoming more frequent and severe.
'We have decided to launch this campaign (Mountaineering Program) annually... Natural disasters are common in the hilly states of India, and their frequency and severity are increasing,' Anand said.
He highlighted the urgent need for operational readiness in terrains that are prone to landslides, avalanches, earthquakes, and flash floods. The mountaineering expeditions, he said, were crucial in ensuring that NDRF teams remain physically and mentally prepared for complex rescue missions at high altitudes.
'Our team must be prepared as first responders. This step is to improve our readiness,' he added.
Referring to the most recent training expedition, the DG said it helped NDRF personnel gain hands-on experience in harsh conditions.
'This was our third expedition, so our rescuers understood that if we had to carry out a rescue operation in high-altitude areas tomorrow, we would be able to handle it without any issues,' he said.
Meanwhile, on June 16, Union Home Minister Amit Shah applauded the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), National Disaster Response Forces (NDRF) and Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) for bringing India closer to becoming a global leader in disaster management.
Addressing the Conference held at the Relief Commissioners of States, Union Territories and Disaster Response Forces, Shah said 'It is a matter of joy for all of us that within 10 years, these three institutions, NDMA, NDRF and CDRI, have brought India closer to becoming a global leader in the field of disaster management. NDMA has done a great job in structuring policy matters, doing research work, delivering articles of various types of studies to the people, making many apps and overall coordination of policy matters...NDRF has created its image in the entire country, has also earned fame and respect. SDRF has also played a huge role in the structure of NDRF...When I say that India is on the verge of becoming a global leader, then we have also gained a lot of fame and acceptance at the global level through the CDRI...' Shah said.
He further stated that the last 10 years will be remembered as India's transitional period where achievements were made in the areas of capacity, speed, efficiency and accuracy. (ANI)

Nainital (Uttarakhand) [India], June 26 (ANI): Congress leader and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat on Thursday criticised the state administration for failing to learn from previous incidents after a tragic bus accident in Rudraprayag left several dead and injured. Speaking to ANI, Harish Rawat said, 'Such incidents happened last year too. It seems that our system is not learning from them. The state's prestige is linked to this yatra. We should consider that even a small mistake or policy error of the administration tarnishes the state's prestige.' At least three people were killed and eight others injured when a bus carrying 20 passengers collided with another bus and plunged into the Alaknanda River near the Gholthir area of Rudraprayag district during early hours today, officials said. Uttarakhand Secretary for Disaster Management, Vinod Kumar Suman, confirmed the incident and said rescue operations were ongoing. 'There were 20 passengers in the bus that swept away in the river in the Gholthir area of Rudraprayag district. We were able to save 8 people, 3 people died, the rest are being searched,' he told ANI. He further added, 'Among the passengers were a driver from Haridwar, 7 people from Rajasthan, 3 people from Madhya Pradesh, 7 people from Gujarat and 2 people from Maharashtra.' Rescue teams from SDRF, NDRF, and DDRF, along with the district administration, immediately rushed to the scene. Local residents also helped in the rescue operation. Some passengers jumped from the bus before it fell into the river and were rescued and taken to the district hospital. Critically injured victims were airlifted to AIIMS Rishikesh. Meanwhile, due to continuous rainfall disrupting the Sonprayag-Munkatia route on the Kedarnath Yatra path, the Rudraprayag district administration safely evacuated 1,269 pilgrims--833 men and 436 women. The bus involved in the accident was travelling from Rudraprayag to Badrinath when it lost control near a sharp turn and fell approximately 300 meters into the river. Earlier in the day, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the incident. 'The news of a tempo traveller falling into a river in Rudraprayag district is deeply tragic. Relief and rescue operations are being conducted on a war footing by SDRF and other rescue teams. I am in constant contact with the local administration regarding this matter. I pray to God for everyone's safety,' CM Dhami said in a post on X. The SDRF has also launched a search operation near the Srinagar Garhwal dam, about 40 kilometres from the crash site, as strong river currents may have carried the victims downstream. (ANI)

NDRF to launch annual mountaineering program for enhanced disaster preparedness
New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): Director General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Piyush Anand, announced the launch of an annual mountaineering program to strengthen the preparedness of NDRF teams in hilly and mountainous regions, where the frequency of natural disasters has increased. The announcement came at a crucial time when events such as the Char Dham Yatra and Amarnath Yatra are about to start. He assured that his team is ready in the face of any tragedy. Speaking to ANI, Anand stated, 'We have decided to launch a mountaineering program each year. The primary reason for this is that natural disaster incidents have increased in the mountainous and hilly states of India. And looking after that, NDRF teams must be well prepared and ready for every situation.' Highlighting the importance of understanding geography and circumstances in such mountains and hilly regions, Anand added, 'This is our third expedition, so our team will be well prepared for any situation. For example, if we have to launch a rescue operation at high altitude with the help of these kinds of expeditions, we will be better prepared for that and achieve success.' He also emphasised the growing impact of disasters in hilly areas and mentioned that NDRF, as a disaster response force, has already pre-deployed teams accordingly. On the suggestions made by the Home Minister, the NDRF has also begun debriefing and analysing its rescue operations to improve future responses. 'Prime Minister and Home Minister have given a target of zero casualties in natural disasters, and we are working on this approach,' he said. Anand further stated that efforts are underway to build the capacity of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, with over 5,000 people trained in the past three years. Technical resources for disaster response have been listed on the NDRF website for SDRF teams to access and utilise during rescue operations. Additionally, 25 disaster management training videos in 11 different languages have been made available on the website. He further informed that 16 NDRF battalions are currently deployed across various states. In anticipation of the upcoming flood season, 97 teams have been deployed to 69 locations nationwide. Pre-deployment of NDRF teams has also been carried out because of potential disasters like floods and landslides. For major events such as the Char Dham Yatra and Amarnath Yatra, teams have been pre-positioned and are in regular coordination with local authorities. (ANI)
