Girlguiding : What are the 72 new badges?

BBC News21-07-2025
Girlguiding, the UK's largest youth organisation for girls, has launched 72 new badges in one of the biggest updates in its 115-year history. The new badges have been designed for girls aged 4 to 18 across all sections of Girlguiding; Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers. This is only the second time in the organisation's history that the badge programme has been updated on such a large scale. Some of the new badges on offer are earned through laughter, kindness, or even strong interests, where enthusiasm over things like Taylor Swift could see teenage Rangers receive a Fandom badge.

The new badges also cover a wide range of interests and skills, from interior design and food tasting to learning about insects and creating calm spaces. They were developed after feedback from more than 20,000 girls and volunteers . More than 4,000 badge ideas were submitted, and 11,000 girls helped test the new activities that each badge involves.
The badge activities were developed with Girlguiding's youth panel Amplify. Fatima, who is 18 and part of the group, says: "It's empowering to know our voices help shape what guiding looks like for the future."The aim of the new badges is to give members more choice and to reflect the things they said they wanted to learn. Amanda Azeez, Girlguiding Acting CEO said: "They've been designed by girls, for girls which is so important to make sure we are staying relevant to girls' wants and needs. My personal favourite is the Bee rescuer badge for Rainbows - I just love it!"
Some of the new badges include: Courage: Helping younger members in Rainbows understand that being brave means trying new things, even when they feel nervous.Interior Designer: Giving girls the chance to plan, design and decorate a space using their creativity.Calm Spaces: Encouraging older members to create a relaxing environment that helps them feel calm and focused.Food Critic: Helping girls explore different flavours and express their opinions on what they do (or don't) like.Since the last badge refresh in 2018, Girlguiding says more than 1.5 million badges have been earned by girls across the UK.
How did Girlguiding begin?
The Girl Guide Association was created in 1909 by a woman called Agnes Baden-Powell. Agnes played an incredibly important role in the Girl Guide movement. Her brother Robert had founded the Boy Scouts Association not long before, but many people didn't approve of girls taking part in outdoor activities, despite many wanting to take part. Agnes wanted to change that and her brother was in full support of her creating an organisation specifically for girls. Girl Guides were soon practising skills like cooking and first aid and there were lots of different badges they could earn. Many of these skills became very useful when the First World War began and saw lots of men and boys go off to fight. Famous Girl Guides include the late Queen Elizabeth, who became a Guide in 1937 at 11 when she was a princess. In 1994 The Girl Guide Association's name was updated to the Guide Association. It was updated again in 2002 and is known today as Girlguiding UK.

Konnie Huq recalls 'mortifying' wardrobe malfunction at the BAFTAs in a glitzy dress: 'My boobs exploded!'

Konnie Huq has revealed a 'mortifying' moment at the 2016 BAFTAs when she suffered a wardrobe malfunction on the red carpet. The presenter, 49, who shares sons shares Covie, 14, and Huxley, 11, with husband Charlie Brooker, opened up about the mishap as she appeared on Fabulous' No Parental Guidance podcast. She explained that at the time of the awards ceremony she was breastfeeding Huxley, who was five months old at the time. Konnie confessed that as a result her breasts ended up 'exploding with milk'. She recalled: 'I would leave the house before the baby had woken up. I'd wake up at five, had to express milk, leave the house before I'd even seen the baby.' 'I needed us to finish early. And if we didn't, I'd sit there with my boobs so in pain.' She continued: 'I was once at the BAFTAs in a sheer dress. I remember having to go to the toilets and then stuff loads of, like, tissue in my bra - and actually squeeze my boobs. 'Thank God, the red carpet bit is first because I could see two stains on me - not a good look'. Konnie became an on-screen favourite when she appeared as a CBBC Blue Peter presenter. She met her Black Mirror creator husband during an episode of his show, Screenwipe, in 2009 and they became engaged nine months later, in June 2010. Previously, the Blue Peter star admitted that she pressured Charlie into having marriage and babies in the early days of their relationship. Konnie said she gave the TV creator an ultimatum so that neither of them wasted their time with one another. Speaking on Sophie Ellis-Bextor's podcast Spinning Plates in 2022, Konnie said she always wanted to have children and feared Charlie didn't feel the same, so the conversation and deal breaker immediately came up. 'I always wanted to have kids... I always thought I'd have three kids and then I had two and was like, ''I'm done now,'' she began. 'But weirdly, Charlie didn't think he ever wanted kids. So when we got together, I was like, "if you're not a having kids kind of person than we're not compatible" But it turns out he was.' 'But he is really good with kids which you might not think cause of his miserable alter ego, but Charlie is a lamb in wolf's clothing.' Speaking about tying the knot so fast after meeting each other, Konnie said that at the time, her 'body clock was ticking'. 'I was in my mid-thirties and when you're in your mid-thirties with your body clock ticking, you sort of think, "I don't want to be in another relationship without it going anywhere", she said.

Lioness legend Millie Bright teaches teens football in new TikTok initiative

As more parents struggle to entertain their teens over the summer, TikTok has launched a new #SummerSkills programme, which features lessons from football star Millie Bright Lioness legend Millie Bright, OBE has become one of the biggest faces of TikTok's free #SummerSkills programme, which plans to teach teens everything from sport to literature to wellbeing without leaving the app. ‌ There's no need to be too surprised. While TikTok has a reputation for brainrot, it's actually fast-becoming one of the UK's biggest learning tools. According to TikTok research, 88% of British teens surveyed (aged 16-19) are turning to the app for educational content. They also found that 44% use TikTok to discover new interests and 40% say they're using TikTok to find how-to tutorials. ‌ This also comes at a time when trends such as #Booktok and #songwriting are on the rise. In fact, there are currently over 60.9 million hashtags under 'booktok', while 'songwriting' boasts over 572 thousand – proving that the app is becoming something of a creative hub. ‌ Plus, many parents don't know how to keep their kids occupied over the long summer months. TikTok's same research found that 87% of British parents feel stressed planning their teen's holidays and almost half say they don't know how to. So, to help fill the gap, TikTok's summer skills programme is running for the five weeks of UK summer holidays. It kicked off on July 23 with Sports Week, which features sports lessons from Chelsea FC Women's captain and England international Millie Bright, who is taking teens through the 'Do's and Don'ts of defending 1v1', as well as football self-care recovery. Millie Bright said: 'I'm delighted to have joined the TikTok #SummerSkills programme to inspire teens to learn new football skills over the Summer holidays. Anybody can learn a new skill as long as they are curious, so grab your friends and family, and challenge them to try something different – you might just surprise yourself.' Other weeks include STEM Week, which will be partially taught by a particle physicist at CERN, Literature Week, which will be hosted by poet Chloe Carter, Music Week and Well-being Week. Teens can simply access the content by typing in #SummerSkills or #LearnOnTikTok on TikTok, or hopping on a TikTok LIVE. They can also follow the account @TikTok_UK to discover new skills each week. ‌ TikTok has also said it is committed to encouraging healthy digital habits during the programme. This includes measures like all under-18 user accounts having a 60-minute time limit and the introduction of new tools like the in-app meditation feature, which encourages users to wind down after 10 pm. Help us improve our content by completing the survey below. We'd love to hear from you! ‌ Dominic Burns, TikTok's Head of Operations, UK, Ireland and Nordics, said: "We know that TikTok is a place where teens come to discover and learn, particularly through our dedicated STEM feed and communities like #BookTok and #LearnonTikTok. 'We're thrilled to bring the TikTok #SummerSkills programme to parents and teens to help them learn new skills together during the holidays, from football tricks to songwriting, poetry to science experiments, TikTok creators will bring these skills to life each week throughout the summer.' He added that the initiative will complement TikTok's ongoing work to provide parents with tools and resources through the 'Family Pairing' feature 'to ensure teens have a positive experience on our platform." The Family Pairing feature came into effect in 2020 and is a tool that allows parents and guardians to link their TikTok account to their child's account – giving them access to control and privacy settings.
