It's a day suitable for the world's most voracious competitive eaters.

Twiggy the Waterskiing Squirrel returns to Mall of America this weekend
Twiggy the Waterskiing Squirrel returns to Mall of America this weekend originally appeared on Bring Me The News. A touch of absurdity will alight at the Mall of America over the weekend, as the Bloomington shopping center gets a return visit from Twiggy the Waterskiing Squirrel. The mainstay of local news broadcasts is coming by for the third year to, well, waterski. The squirrel will put on three shows on both Saturday, June 7, and Sunday, June 8, with a meet and greet to follow each performance. While a meet and greet with a squirrel sounds like the set-up for a disaster in a Will Ferrell comedy, how many chances will you have to take a selfie with a multi-hyphenate squirrel? The squirrel's act began in 1978 when Chuck and Lou Ann Best rescued a squirrel that had been blown from its nest during a hurricane. They taught it to ski and launched an act that has lasted a surprisingly long time. The act is now run by their son, Chuck Best Jr. The free performances will take place in the Huntington Bank Rotunda at noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. both story was originally reported by Bring Me The News on Jun 7, 2025, where it first appeared.

Former KARE 11 anchor Randy Shaver teases 'new job'
Former KARE 11 anchor Randy Shaver teases 'new job' originally appeared on Bring Me The News. Randy Shaver, the beloved former Minnesota television sports and news anchor, has been a busy man since signing off at KARE 11 last summer — and it appears that he's not done working despite enjoying life in "retirement." We sincerely doubt he's going to be a Mouth Tape model, but Shaver teased his new adventure on Saturday with a photo of himself — and his mouth was taped shut. "I'd love to tell you about my new job starting in August but my new boss is asking me to wait," Shaver said. "So, stay tuned." Shaver signed off KARE 11 for the last time in June 2024, saying then that he was "done working nights" and was excited to focus on his family, especially his role as a grandfather. Shaver worked two years at KAAL-TV in Austin, Minnesota before joining at KARE 11 as a sports reporter in 1983. He wound up working as the sports director for 18 years before transition to a news anchor role in 2012, where he remained on the evening and nightly news until last summer. In total, Shaver worked 43 years in TV news. It took Shaver less than a month away from the anchor desk to start a high school football podcast last year. What's next? Only Shaver — and his "new boss" — know for now... This story was originally reported by Bring Me The News on Jun 7, 2025, where it first appeared.

Greek Food Fair Festival helps keep Church in community
DES MOINES, Iowa — The 45th annual Greek Food Fair Festival is taking place this weekend, and while it's known for its delicious food and cultural performances, the festival has a greater impact on the Orthodox community in Des Moines. The festival is organized by the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, and the St. Demetrius Serbian Orthodox Church also takes part. Greek and Serbian food draw hundreds of people to the Drake neighborhood during the first weekend in June every year. Peter Caldbeck, the Vice President of the Greek Orthodox Church, said that the festival is their largest fundraiser every year and is what allows them to stay in the community. The building that the Church is in was built in 1906 and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Proceeds from the festival help with the upkeep of the building. 'We've been an anchor here for over 100 years, so that's something we take pride in and it helps with just the upkeep in the building and the running of the Church and our parish,' he said. Caldbeck said the Church redid their roof last month and last year's proceeds helped finance that project. The festival kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday and ends at 8 p.m. A new attraction this year is a free shuttle. People can part in the north lot of the Franklin Events Center, and a shuttle will arrive every twenty minutes to pick up people and take them to the Church. The Franklin Events Center is located at 4801 Franklin Avenue in Des Moines. Click here for the shuttle schedule. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
