Juncos Racing truck catches fire on the way back from Iowa Speedway

Yahoo14-07-2025
After a race day that didn't end as the team had hoped — with a late caution denying what could have been a top-five finish for the No. 76 car of Conor Daly — Juncos Hollinger Racing encountered an even bigger issue on the return trip to their headquarters in Indianapolis.
The team, led by Ricardo Juncos, was traveling on Interstate 74 when the hauler carrying both cars and all of Sting Ray Robb's equipment caught fire.

The incident, which fortunately caused no injuries, started in the truck's rear axle for reasons still under investigation by the team, Motorsport.com has learned.
The vehicle, which came to a stop about four hours from Indianapolis, will be thoroughly inspected upon its return to the JHR shop to assess the damage. However, there are concerns it may no longer be usable.
The incident comes at arguably the worst time of the season. Following two consecutive race weekends in Mid-Ohio and Iowa Speedway, the IndyCar Series shows no signs of slowing down, with the next round taking place this weekend in Toronto, Canada, followed immediately by Laguna Seca and Portland.

To meet its upcoming championship commitments, Juncos Hollinger Racing will use a hauler provided by Andretti Global. The team is now working tirelessly to ensure everything is ready for departure to Toronto on Wednesday.
"A tough end to our Iowa weekend, both on and off the track," said the team in an official press release.
"After an early retirement for the #77 car, our hauler caught fire on I-74 while heading back to the shop. It was a scary moment for the team, but thankfully, everyone is safe, and that's what matters most.
"We've been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, messages, and well wishes from fans, fellow teams, IndyCar officials, and the entire racing community. It's a reminder of the incredible family we have in this sport.

"We are assessing the damage and will be working hard to get back on track. Thank you again for everything. Your support fuels our determination!"

Thomas Müller jokes he's missing Manuel Neuer as Vancouver adventure begins

MUNICH (AP) — Thomas Müller has a lot to adapt to with the Vancouver Whitecaps after 25 years at Bayern Munich. First up, flying without an old friend. Aboard the plane taking him to Canada and Major League Soccer, Müller joked it was the first time in 15 years he'd flown without Manuel Neuer, the goalkeeper who's been his longtime teammate for Bayern and the German national team. 'I'm on my flight to Vancouver. I'm looking for the GOAT. Can you help me? I cannot find him anywhere,' Müller said in a video on Instagram. 'It's my first flight without Manuel Neuer since maybe 15 years, I don't know. I'm very excited to come to Vancouver to play for the Whitecaps. Fingers crossed for my first games. See you there.' The 35-year-old forward admitted to feeling 'a little bit nervous' in comments to German broadcaster Sky Sport. 'It's the first time in a very long time that I'm joining a new team.' Müller joined Bayern's academy as a 10-year-old in 2000 and had spent his entire career with the German champion, winning a record 13 Bundesliga titles, two Champions Leagues and the World Cup with Germany in 2014. His last game for Bayern was a quarterfinal loss to Paris Saint-Germain at the Club World Cup in Atlanta, after a months-long farewell from the club. Bayern announced in April it wouldn't be extending his contract. Müller said he understood 'even if this did not reflect my personal wishes.' The following weeks saw emotional scenes with teammates, club officials and fans as Müller hit personal milestones — passing his 500th Bundesliga game and 750th game in total for Bayern — and wrapped up yet another German title. Vancouver said last week Müller will join the Whitecaps for the remainder of the season in an open roster spot, with a Designated Player option for 2026. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

London Knights Bolster Lineup With Latest Two Signings

There's one thing that the London Knights don't do: rebuild. Fresh off back-to-back OHL Championships, and several of their star players leaving the team due to graduating to the professional level or aging out of the league, don't expect the Hunter brothers to stay quiet. The Knights are losing seven forwards who played inside their top nine. Replacing guys like Easton Cowan, Denver Barkey, and Kasper Halttunen is about as challenging a task as it gets. However, substituting for Landon Sim, Jesse Nurmi, and Blake Montgomery is a bit easier. That's where London's new overage forward comes into play. OHL Talent On Display Day 1 Of 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup Day one of the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup is in the books. Canada took down Finland in a close 5-3 game. Sweden took it to the Germans, winning convincingly 10-0. The United States defeated one of the host nations, Slovakia, by a score of 6-3. And Czechia, the other host nation, gave its home crowd lots to cheer about with a 6-2 win over Switzerland. On Aug. 7, the Knights organization announced the signing of 2005-born forward Kaeden Hawkins to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. It's rare for an overage signing to occur; however, with the ability to play in the CHL while holding an NCAA commitment and developing under the Hunter brothers, this move by Hawkins highlights the London Knights' status in junior hockey and the continually changing relationship between the CHL and NCAA. Hawkins, 20, is committed to the University of St. Thomas. More notably, he is a product of the prestigious Shattuck St. Mary's program, having spent three seasons with them from 2021-2024. In his 2024-25 campaign, the St. Louis, Missouri, native recorded 45 points (21 goals, 24 assists) in 58 regular season games for the Waterloo Black Hawks of the USHL. He led his club in points and finished second in goals. The Black Hawks had an exciting playoff run, ultimately falling short in the finals to the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Alas, the experience Hawkins gained from that run, and finishing second on the team in goals (8), must have caught the eye of London's scouts and management. Niagara IceDogs Acquire Alex Hage, Younger Brother of Montreal Canadiens Top Prospect The Niagara IceDogs and the Peterborough Petes have made a minor trade involving the younger brother of Montreal Canadiens' top prospect Michael Hage. The USHL, along with the Jr. A leagues across Canada, are catching the short straw with the new NCAA rule change. Hawkins most likely would have never signed with London if we had reverted to the way things were before. Additionally, Ryan Sikes of Puck Preps has reported that another USHL player may be leaving to join the Knights. Ohio State commit forward Ben Wilmott is expected to make his way over too. The Knights struck gold when they acquired Austin Elliott from the Barrie Colts after he was waived by his WHL team, the Saskatoon Blades. Elliott was their main man between the pipes throughout the playoffs and in the Memorial Cup. However, he was utilized in a tandem role with Vancouver Canucks prospect Aleksei Medvedev. No NCAA for Aleksei Medvedev: A Sigh of Relief for The London Knights & Their Fans Aleksei Medvedev will not be joining the NCAA, much to the relief of London Knights fans. His decision to forgo college hockey leaves the door open for him to continue his career in major junior hockey, maintaining the Knights' strong roster. Seeing the success they had running a tandem last season, the Knights have found a partner for Medvedev. On Aug. 10, the Knights announced the signing of goaltender Sebastian Gatto to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. He will wear #80, last worn by Owen Willmore. Gatto, 19, is of similar size to Medvedev, standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing in around 185 pounds. Unlike Hawkins, Gatto isn't a free agent signing. The dual Canadian-USA citizen was drafted in the 12th round (242nd overall) in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection as a double overage entry. He spent the 2024-25 season playing for the Chilliwack Chiefs of the BCHL, posting a stellar 19-6-4 record, with a goals-against-average of 2.87, and a save percentage of .893. Back in 2023-24, Gatto played in the OJHL for the Leamington Flyers, where he was particularly impressive. He scored a 17-9-2 record, a 2.23 goals-against-average, a .928 save percentage, and four shutouts in the regular season. Amongst goalies with a minimum of 30 games played, he had the third-highest save percentage and fourth-highest goals-against-average. The Flyers made it to the conference finals that season, with Gatto playing a significant role in the crease. He posted a 2.13 goals-against-average and a .932 save percentage in the post-season, but sadly lost in round three to the Collingwood Blues. Just like Elliott, Gatto has also attended a Toronto Maple Leafs development camp. He was invited to Toronto's most recent camp this summer, where he was seen repping his Leamington Flyers mask. Flooding partially submerged cars at Milwaukee Mile track. What's next ahead of IndyCar visit?

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Days after a historic deluge left the Milwaukee Mile feet deep in stormwater, a State Fair Park spokesman said the racetrack was not damaged and the facility will be ready to go when the IndyCar arrives. The second-last day of the 2025 Wisconsin State Fair was cut short Saturday when a storm that ultimately dropped 9 inches of rain on West Allis flooded the grounds and infield tunnel and left some cars parked on the track partially submerged. The scheduled final day of the Fair was then canceled. The next big event at the facility is the Snap-On Milwaukee Mile 250, with practice and qualifying scheduled for Aug. 23 and the race for Aug. 24. IndyCar returned to the Mile in 2024 after a 13-year absence under a contract that runs through 2026. State Fair Park does not release ticket sales information, communications manager Tim McCormick said in an email. A count of seats available for purchase online with a little more than two weeks to go showed about 5,000 of an estimated 14,000 reserved seats remaining for race day plus an undetermined number of general admission tickets and infield camping permits. Insider: Bringing 'entertainment' to Penske Entertainment: How Fox's new minority stake pushes IndyCar forward Although 2024 attendance was not announced, seats were substantially filled for both 250-lap races Saturday and Sunday. Bud Denker, president of Penske Corporation, which assisted State Fair in promotion, estimated the three-day total would be about 40,000. Milwaukee retained its relative position on the 17-race schedule for 2025, one week before the finale at Nashville Superspeedway. Although the IndyCar championship typically is not decided until the final race, eight-time winner Alex Palou already locked up his fourth title Aug. 10 in Portland, Oregon. Insider: Failure at Iowa sparks latest 2026 IndyCar schedule question: Will Penske Entertainment be able to promote? IndyCar is expected to again be the only major race on the State Fair Park oval in 2026. Bob Sargent, whose Track Enterprises promoted NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races in 2023 and '24 as well as other races, said recently he met with park officials but couldn't come up with a date that worked for all parties.
