Youth dies during physical test
Bhubaneswar: A youth died and seven others were hospitalised after collapsing during a physical test for Home Guard recruitment in Gajapati district on Thursday morning, police said. The incident occurred during a 2 km running test held between Ranipenth and Padmapur near Paralakhemundi, the district headquarters.
The deceased has been identified as Sulant Mishal, a resident of Parisal village in Gajapati district, police said. According to sources, Mishal suddenly collapsed just 30 seconds before completing the run. He was rushed to the district headquarters hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Seven other candidates, who fell ill during the physical test, are currently undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed grief over the incident and announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the family of the deceased youth. In a post on X, the CMO said, 'Sulant Mishal died while undergoing physical examination for recruitment to the post of Home Guard in Gajapati. Chief Minister Shri @MohanMOdisha expressed deep grief over the incident and announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for the next of kin of the deceased.'

Niva Bupa shares fall 11% as PE investor sells 12% stake in block deal
Shares of Niva Bupa Health Insurance slipped as much as 11.1% on Monday to Rs 82 on the BSE after a large block deal involving a 12% equity stake saw 56.3 lakh shares change hands, as per ETNOW. ADVERTISEMENT Ahead of the trade, on June 1, ET NOW reported, citing sources, that homegrown private equity firm True North and Niva Bupa's Managing Director and CEO, Krishnan Ramachandran, were set to offload a combined 132 million shares in the health insurer through a block deal. ETNOW had also reported that Fettle Tone LLP, an investment vehicle of True North, was expected to sell up to 122 million shares, or roughly 6.7% of Niva Bupa's equity. CEO Krishnan Ramachandran was likely to dilute 10 million shares, equating to around 0.5% of the company. The offer price was set at Rs 82 per share, pegging the total size of the transaction at around Rs 1,082 crore. Based on the latest shareholding pattern as of March-end, the company's promoter Bupa holds 55.98% stake, while True North holds 17.47% via Fettle Tone Bupa reported a 31.2% year-on-year rise in net profit for the March quarter, posting Rs 206 crore compared to Rs 157 crore in the same period last year. Gross premiums increased 18% to Rs 2,078.7 crore, while net premiums climbed 21% to Rs 1,672 the insurer's underwriting profit slipped 12.2% year-on-year to Rs 57.6 crore from Rs 65.6 crore. Operating profit also fell sharply by 43.1% to Rs 94.9 crore from Rs 166.8 crore in the year-ago period. Its solvency ratio stood steady at 3.03% on a sequential basis. Govt hikes tobacco fine to Rs 1,000
Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has published a gazette notification increasing the fine for public use of cigarettes and tobacco products from Rs 200 to Rs 1,000. The government has also raised the minimum legal age for purchasing cigarettes and tobacco products from 18 to 21 years, according to a statement issued by the Health Ministry on Saturday. Additionally, the government has banned the opening or operation of hookah bars across the state. The order has been issued in the name of the Governor by the Secretary, Department of Parliamentary Affairs and Legislation, G. Sridhar. This decision follows the assent of President Droupadi Murmu on May 23 to the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2024. The new Act amends the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (Central Act 34 of 2003) as it applies to the state of Karnataka. The amendment specifies that no person shall use tobacco products in any public place. The term 'use' includes both smoking and spitting of tobacco. The sale of cigarettes or other tobacco products is now prohibited: To any person under the age of 21 years; within a 100-meter radius of any educational institution; in loose form or as single sticks. The Act also states that no person shall open or operate a hookah bar, either individually or on behalf of another person, in any location—including eating houses, pubs, bars, or restaurants—regardless of what they are called. According to the new provisions, anyone who violates Section 4A of the Act shall be punishable with: Imprisonment of not less than one year, which may extend up to three years; a fine of not less than Rs 50,000, which may go up to Rs 1 lakh. The Act further allows that in hotels with 30 or more rooms, restaurants with a seating capacity of 30 or more, and at airports, a designated smoking area or space may be provided. Karnataka joins the league of Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Gujarat states, which have implemented similar amendments to strengthen public health protections against tobacco use.

Two rescued mentally ill men shifted to care centre
Udupi: Two mentally ill men rescued on separate occasions by social worker Vishu Shetty have been shifted to Swarga Ashrama, a care centre in Kolalgiri in the outskirts of Udupi town, after their families declined to take them back despite repeated efforts to contact them. One of the men, Dinesh Poojary, was found wandering unclothed on National Highway-66 near Nittur nearly a month ago. The other, identified only as Hanumanth, had attempted suicide about 15 days ago in Kuthpady. Both were rescued and admitted to Dr A V Baliga Memorial Hospital in Doddanagudde by Shetty. After treatment, the men recovered and expressed a desire to reunite with their families. However, according to Shetty, attempts to trace and convince their families were unsuccessful. With no other support system in place, he arranged for their care at Swarga Ashrama and personally bore their medical expenses amounting to Rs 65,000.
