Openness brings progress, closure leads to backwardness: Chinese FM on U.S.-imposed tarrifs
Amid the ongoing mixture of changes and chaos in the current international situation, every country must make a choice between unilateralism and multilateralism, closeness and openness, unity and division, said Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, who was here attending the ASEAN Plus foreign ministers' meetings in the Malaysian capital.
China's choice is to be more open, he stressed, explaining that this is not only the basic experience of China's development and growth, but also the inevitable logic of history moving forward.
China has taken the initiative to provide zero-tariff treatment for products to the least developed countries and the entire Africa, fully completed negotiations on the Version 3.0 China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, and has created a new model of cross-regional cooperation at the ASEAN-China-GCC summit, he added.
In contrast, the high tariffs imposed on various countries are a clear violation of World Trade Organization rules, disrupting the stable operation of the production and supply chains, and hindering the recovery and development of the world economy, said the Chinese foreign minister, adding that such move is irresponsible, unpopular, and unsustainable.
Wang said that China will continue to stand firmly with countries in the region, promoting unity, cooperation, and collective strength, and will always be an advocate of multilateralism, a defender of free trade, and a contributor to open development, he said.

China warns of global ‘turbulence' as Beijing hosts supply chain expo
BEIJING, July 16 — China's vice premier He Lifeng warned today that the world was undergoing 'turbulence and transformation' as he kicked off an expo in Beijing at which Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is also expected to speak. Beijing is using this week's China International Supply Chain Expo as a forum to boost its image as the global defender of free trade—in contrast with the tariff chaos sparked by US President Donald Trump. In a thinly veiled swipe at the US leader in his opening remarks, He said: 'some countries are interfering in the market under the pretext of reducing risk, using measures such as imposing tariffs'. 'Global changes of a century are accelerating, with multiple risks intertwining and piling up,' he said. 'We need to further build a shared consensus on development, firmly oppose the politicisation, ideologisation, and over-securitisation of economic and trade issues, and work together to uphold an open and cooperative international environment.' — AFP

MACC chief apologises to Teoh Beng Hock's family, offers financial support for his child
Azam apologised to Teoh Beng Hock's family on 16th anniversary of his death. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (July 16): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki today offered an apology to the family of Teoh Beng Hock, the political aide who was found dead in 2009 at the anti-graft body's Selangor office building. On the 16th anniversary of Teoh's death, Azam said the MACC acknowledges findings from various investigations over the past 16 years on Teoh's death, including the police's latest probe which had been given the 'No Further Action' classification by the Attorney General's Chambers. 'Although the latest investigation did not uncover sufficient evidence to charge any individual under the law, the MACC views with utmost seriousness the fact that the late Teoh Beng Hock was found deceased on MACC Selangor premises on 16 July 2009. 'This tragic incident has had a profound impact not only on the deceased's family but also on all MACC personnel and the nation as a whole,' he said in a statement today. 'In light of this, I, as the Chief Commissioner of the MACC, wish to express my deepest sympathies and extend an apology to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock for the pain and suffering they have endured over the years,' he added. Azam noted that the Malaysian government had previously on May 12, 2015 paid RM600,000 as compensation to Teoh's family, as well as RM60,000 in legal costs as a full and final settlement. 'Nevertheless, as a gesture of compassion, MACC is prepared to provide a goodwill contribution to the late Teoh's family for the purpose of supporting the welfare and educational needs of his child,' he said. Azam did not disclose the amount of the proposed goodwill contribution.
