Selangor climate adaptation centre to inform policies

The newly established Selangor Climate Adaptation Centre (SCAC) will address climate change through science, research and data-driven findings.
Located at Bangunan Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah in Shah Alam, the centre will present reports twice a year to Selangor State Climate Change Action Council chaired by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
The next meeting is scheduled for the end of this month, said Selangor public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin at the launch of SCAC at a hotel in Shah Alam.
Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah was the guest of honour at the event.
'This centre – the first of its kind in the country – will provide the platform to enhance policies, introduce innovations and restructure development towards sustainability and inclusiveness,' Jamaliah said, adding that SCAC's role was not merely reactive.
'The centre will not just be firefighting climate issues.
'It will focus on planning and long-term solutions based on science and data.'
Jamaliah said SCAC would comprise academics, international and local experts as well as representatives from the private sector with experience in climate-related planning.
'We also welcome strategic partnerships, particularly for capacity-building efforts and to support small and medium enterprises in Selangor in aligning with environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles,' she added.
The centre's executive director is Daniel Lee, who has 18 years of experience in the climate change sector. — By SHEILA SRI PRIYA

The meeting comes as part of the broader consultation process launched by the UN mission with various parties to gather input on the proposals developed by the advisory committee concerning unresolved disputes in the electoral framework and political process.

The International Air Transport Association IATA announced that GOL and TAP Air Portugal have become the first airlines to use IATA FuelIS—an advanced analytics solution designed to help airlines optimize fuel consumption. IATA's net-zero carbon emissions roadmap highlights that technology and operational efficiency improvements—which directly lower fuel consumption—are expected to contribute to about 10% of the emissions reduction in 2050*. 'Fuel management is key for airlines. Depending on the prevailing price of jet fuel, it generally accounts for 25-30% of the cost base. On top of that, as airlines decarbonize, tracking and managing carbon costs—which are directly related to fuel consumption—will be a growing priority. Understanding how an airline is performing compared with industry peers using FuelIS can pinpoint potential efficiencies that reduce costs and improve environmental performance. The great support from 220 airlines contributing operational data on fuel consumption combined with continuously improving analytical capabilities makes FuelIS a very compelling tool,' said Nick Careen, IATA Senior Vice President Operations, Safety and Security. Data Accuracy and Reliability: IATA FuelIS helps airlines benchmark the fuel efficiency of their aircraft or engines against industry averages, gaining valuable insights into specific markets, regions, countries, and fleet types based on real operational data. IATA FuelIS uses data from the IATA Global Aviation Data Management (GADM) platform. This data is sourced from the Flight Data eXchange (FDX) program which now comprises fuel data from more than 220 airlines worldwide, covering more than 8 million flights a year. FuelIS integrates seamlessly with IATA's Fuel Efficiency Gap Analysis (FEGA), with the data from FuelIS supporting the development and tracking of fuel strategies. Since 2005, IATA has partnered with airlines worldwide, helping the industry identify potential annual reductions of 4.76 million tonnes in fuel consumption, equating to $3.8 billion in savings annually. EGA trialling new wearable technology as part of annual ‘Beat the Heat' safety programme - Middle East Business News and Information
Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, today announced the introduction of new innovative wearable safety technology in its annual 'Beat the Heat' programme to prevent heat-related illness amongst industrial workers in the hot UAE summer. Heat-related illness is a hazard for anyone working outside in the UAE summer, and can be fatal if left untreated. EGA's industrial processes generate further heat and must operate continuously, meaning work is conducted outside around-the-clock all summer. EGA is a global leader in combating heat-related illness, with no cases since 2021. EGA has been trialling wearable technology to monitor critical health indicators during the summer since 2022. The new wearable technology is designed for challenging industrial environments like smelters. The technology offers enhanced location services, connectivity and consistent real-time data feeds accessible by EGA supervisors and medical teams. The devices provide automated work and rest cycles if core body temperature rises beyond a specified threshold. 'Beat the Heat' is EGA's annual summer-long, comprehensive programme to combat occupational heat stress and entirely prevent heat-related illness. The initiative has been running for over a decade to drive awareness amongst EGA's employees of the early signs of heat stress, and equip and empower them to take action to prevent the onset of heat-related illness. This year, EGA has also deployed full body cooling units at EGA medical centres and selected operational areas in Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah. The cooling suits offer rapid, non-invasive core body cooling to support emergency response. Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium , said: 'Heat-related illness is a serious challenge in our region. At EGA, our goal each summer is to engage everyone in ensuring we have zero cases of heat-related illness at our company, and together we have a long track record of success. Technology has the potential to make our Beat the Heat programme even more effective.' EGA's 'Beat the Heat' campaign includes hydration testing before and during shifts, scheduled cooling breaks, access to cooling showers, and dedicated rest zones across EGA's operations. Employees and contractors use cooling booths, drinking water stations, icemakers, and portable air conditioning units to stay cool and hydrated throughout the day. EGA achieved zero recordable heat-related illnesses for the third consecutive summer in 2024. EGA last cases of recordable heat-related illness were in 2021, when two employees required treatment at the company's medical centres. In both cases, the employees received hydration via intravenous drips and fully recovered within hours.2018.
