Health body flags COVID risk at TDP Mahanadu meet, slams govt. for ‘double standards'

The Hindu27-05-2025
Praja Arogya Vedika (PAV) has raised concerns over the three-day TDP Mahanadu event, set to begin in Kadapa on May 27, citing the renewed threat of a COVID-19 resurgence and rising cases across the country.
In a letter to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday, PAV president M.V. Ramanaiah and general secretary T. Kameswara Rao highlighted recent data showing 1,009 new cases reported nationwide in the past 24 hours. Kerala accounted for 430 cases, followed by Maharashtra (209), Delhi (104) and Gujarat (83). They also pointed to a global spike in infections, which has prompted the World Health Organization to issue fresh warnings.
Referring to the COVID-19 guidelines issued by the State government recently, the PAV leaders said the advisory has clearly asked the public not to organise mass gatherings. It also advised senior citizens and pregnant women to remain indoors and others to ensure strict adherence to COVID-appropriate behaviour like ensuring adequate social distancing, wearing masks and frequent washing of hands.
Ironically, the State government, which issued guidelines to the public, is organising the Mahanadu on a grand scale in Kadapa, they said, adding that arrangements were being made to mobilise five lakh people for the event. They noted that there was no clarity on how the organisers would follow COVID-appropriate behaviour at the gathering. The organisers seem to be ignorant of the danger to the people of the State due the mass gathering, which can aid the spread of the disease, the leaders said.
The PAV leaders pointed out that the government should also realise what message it would be sending to the general public by organising such mass gathering, ignoring the renewed threat of the pandemic. They demanded that the Mahanadu organisers should strictly adhere to the COVID-19 advisory issued by the government. The number of participants should be restricted, overcrowding at one place should be prevented, compulsory wearing of masks should be insisted on all participants and regular sanitisation should be ensured at the venue, they added.

Govt nod to 93 additional LCA Mk 1 jets for IAF

THE CABINET Committee on Security Tuesday cleared the procurement of 97 LCA Mk 1 A light combat aircraft for the Indian Air Force, sources confirmed to The Indian Express. When inducted, the additional indigenous jets will be a boost to the dwindling fighter squadrons of the IAF. The order was already in the pipeline. Their procurement was cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in 2023. Earlier, the IAF had placed an order for 83 LCA Mk 1 A jets in February 2021. Subsequently, in August 2021, the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited placed an order worth Rs 5,375 crore for 99 F404 engines with GE Aerospace to power the indigenously made Tejas Mk-1A. The first of these jet engines was delivered to HAL after a delay of nearly a year and a half, in April this year. The second engine was delivered last month. The engine deliveries were delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain issues. Twelve Light Combat Aircraft Tejas will be ready to be rolled out by December this year, of which six aircraft have already been lined up, government officials had said. The timely induction of the indigenous fighter jets, including Tejas Mk 1A, is crucial to holding the IAF's dwindling squadron strength. The IAF has phased out most of its MiG-21 squadrons, and early next decade, it is likely to begin phasing out other ageing fighter squadrons. According to officials, HAL plans to produce 16 fighter jets next year provided the engine deliveries from the US are on schedule. The original plans were to produce 16 aircraft every year and complete deliveries of all jets by 2030.

France's Emmanuel Macron breaks silence on why he sued Candace Owens over ‘nonsense' Brigitte conspiracy theory

French President Emmanuel Macron, who filed a lawsuit against Candace Owens, revealed that he did so to refute her 'nonsense' allegations on his wife Brigitte Macron. France's President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron (AFP) Last month, Macrons sued Owens for defamation after she falsely accused Brigitte of being born a man in her 'relentless and unjustified smear campaign.' The couple sued her on 22 charges, including malicious claims and defamation, and they are even requesting damages. In an interview with Paris Match , the French president discussed the issue for the first time since suing Owens, saying that he felt obligated to do so since the false charges had taken on a life of their own in the United States. 'This has become so widespread in the United States that we had to react,' the French President stated, as per the Independent UK. 'It's a question of having the truth respected.' The complaint claims that the Macrons have suffered 'tremendous damage' as a result of her lies. In order to avoid the 'Streisand effect,' which is when someone tries to hide something in order to draw more attention to it, the couple was first told not to make a complaint against Owens, the French president told Paris Match. However, he stated that they felt compelled to reply due to the substantial amount of attention the claims have received. Macron responded, 'It is not freedom of speech to want to prevent the restoration of the truth,' when asked about the negative reaction he and Brigitte have received in the United States following Owens' comments. Those who talk to you about this so-called freedom of speech are the ones who ban journalists from the Oval Office. I do not accept this.' 'It is dehumanizing and deeply unjust' According to the complaint, Owens' comments exposed the couple to a 'campaign of global humiliation, turning their lives into fodder for profit-driven lies.' 'The result is relentless bullying on a worldwide scale. Every time the Macrons leave their home, they do so knowing that countless people have heard, and many believe, these vile fabrications. It is invasive, dehumanizing, and deeply unjust,' as per the filing. The Macrons attacked Owens' credibility as well. The lawsuit alleges that she routinely peddled 'misinformation under the guise of legitimate reporting,' such as spreading conspiracy theories against vaccines, and 'built a brand on provocation, not truth.' The Covid-19 vaccinations, according to her, are 'pure evil.'

P4 initiative: Selection of ‘Margadarshis' is done voluntarily, says A.P. CM

Reiterating that every decision of the Andhra Pradesh government is aimed at the welfare of the poor, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday said the selection of 'Margadarshis' (mentors) under P4 initiative is being done voluntarily, without any compulsion. Saying that each individual chooses their own way of serving society, the Chief Minister cited the example of a devotee who recently donated 121 kg of gold worth ₹140 crore to the Lord Venkateswara temple at Tirumala from the earnings of his own company, while requesting that his name remain anonymous. 'Some people contribute in their own way. Yet, true satisfaction and fulfilment do not come from wealth or achievements. They come only from serving and supporting the poor,' he observed. Mr. Naidu emphasised that the 'Margadarshis' (mentors) must not only extend financial support but also provide reassurance to the adopted Bangaru Kutumbalu (golden families). 'I am a Margadarshi too. I have adopted 250 families in my Kuppam constituency and will personally devote time to their well-being,' he said, recalling the legacy of social reformers like Dokka Seethamma. During the event, Mr. Naidu interacted, in virtual mode, with the overseas Telugu NRIs who came forward to adopt poor families, including several from Saudi Arabia. Emotional testimonies came from the beneficiaries, including Pavani from Krishna district, who secured employment at HCL through P4. Symbolically, Mr. Naidu presented an 'Adopt Tree' to families from his Kuppam constituency. The Chief Minister launched the symbolic 'Adopt Tree' in Kuppam, presenting it to beneficiary families. The families expressed gratitude, saying that their lives were improving with the government's support. Highlighting women's empowerment, the Chief Minister said that only the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) had consistently created platforms for girls' safety, education, and independence. 'Sanjeevani' Mr. Naidu said a new initiative in public health titled Sanjeevani, a programme designed to protect community health, to be launched in collaboration with the Bill Gates Foundation. 'Service brings true contentment, and help brings fulfilment. With P4, our mission is not just to extend assistance but also to give hope and dignity to every poor family,' he said. Senior officials, P4 Foundation vice-chairman Kutumbarao, and NRT chairman Vemuri Ravi Kumar attended the programme.
