‘I have decided to take a break from cricket. A lot has happened…': Pakistan star opts out of World Cup selection
Former Pakistan captain Nida Dar has withdrawn from national selection, citing mental health challenges. This marks a first in the country's cricket history, highlighting the growing awareness and acknowledgement of mental well-being in sports.
In a social media post shared on Friday, the 39-year-old announced her decision to take a break from cricket to prioritise her mental health. "In the past few months, a lot has happened around me personally and professionally, which has taken a toll on my mental health. Therefore, I have decided to take a break from cricket to focus on myself. I request everyone to respect my privacy during this time," she stated.
She also confirmed that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been informed of her situation.
Nida's decision comes after she was asked to be available for selection for the ICC Women's World Cup qualifiers recently held in Lahore. While she did appear for a fitness test, she subsequently withdrew when asked to report for the training camp. It was also noted that she did not participate in the recent women's national T20 Cup. Her last appearance for Pakistan was in a match against New Zealand in Dubai last October.
Nida Dar has been a cornerstone of the Pakistan women's cricket team for well over a decade. An accomplished right-arm off-spinner and a powerful middle-order batter, she has consistently contributed to the team's performances across both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 Internationals.
She holds the distinction of being the first Pakistani woman cricketer to take 100 wickets in T20 Internationals.Nida has represented Pakistan in 270 international matches (ODIs and T20Is combined). Her all-round abilities made her an invaluable asset, often contributing crucial runs and picking up vital wickets at key moments in matches.
She has also had the honour of captaining the national women's team, demonstrating her leadership qualities and experience.

Australia reveal playing XI for World Test Championship Final
London, June 10 (UNI) Australia captain Pat Cummins on Tuesday revealed his side's playing XI for the ICC World Test Championship at Lord's. Cummins spoke to the media here and announced the XI the reigning World Test Championship winners will use is exactly the one as predicted by Australian great Ricky Ponting on The ICC Review last month. Former No.1 ranked Test batter Marnus Labuschagne will push up the order to open alongside Usman Khawaja, while Josh Hazlewood won the race against Scott Boland to partner left-armer Mitchell Starc and Cummins in the pace attack. All-rounder Cameron Green will play his first Test since back surgery, while Beau Webster retains his spot in the XI and will provide the bowlers some support with his medium pace and spin options. Cummins explained his reasons why selectors opted for Labuschagne at the top of the order and decided to leave teenager Sam Konstas out of the XI, an ICC report said. "With Marnus moving, we thought it's one spot up really. It's not too different to batting three," Cummins said. "Marnus has experience, he has done well here at Lord's and in England in general," he said. "Opening the batting can be tough, but it can also be sometimes the best time to bat, before the Dukes ball actually starts swinging," Cummins said. "There's an opportunity to score there, so just keeping that ball in tow I think is going to mean something," he said. Cummins said Konstas was disappointed to miss out, but believes the 19-year-old has a strong future ahead with the side. "Realistically, he's really young, he's got a long career ahead of him," Cummins said. "So hopefully, even by not playing, we can show him their learning opportunities," he said. Cummins also spoke in depth surrounding the decision to leave Boland out of the XI and opt for Hazlewood. "There are some guys where you generally say you've done nothing wrong, don't change a thing, and that's Scott and he's just really unfortunate to miss out," the skipper said. "The message to Scott is there's a lot of Test matches coming up in the next couple of years, and just because you're in your mid-30s doesn't mean you're missing this Test and that's the last Test of your career," he said. "I think Cam Green, the last few weeks he's had, is coming back in great form, we thought he deserves a spot somewhere in the batting line-up. We thought three probably suited him best. And then, you know, with Marnus moving, we thought it's, you know, one spot up really. It's not too different from batting at three. He's done well here in England in the past. You know, all the boys have trained well. He, Sam ( Konstas), and Josh Inglis have all trained really well. But I thought the selectors went with Marnus's experience, (not only) here at Lord's, but in England in general," Cummins told reporters in London on Tuesday. The skipper further explained that while opening in English conditions presents unique challenges, it can also offer early scoring opportunities, especially before the Dukes ball starts to swing significantly. 'Opening the batting can be tough, but it can also be the best time to bat. There's an opportunity to score there,' he said. Labuschagne, the former World No.1 Test batter, will walk out alongside Usman Khawaja at the top of the order, with Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, and Beau Webster forming a solid middle order. Green returns to the Test side after recovering from back surgery, while Webster retains his spot to offer valuable all-round support, including part-time medium pace and spin. In the bowling department, Josh Hazlewood has been preferred over Scott Boland, a decision Cummins said was one of the toughest to make. 'There are some guys where you generally say you've done nothing wrong, don't change a thing, and that's Scott. He's just really unfortunate to miss out,' Cummins said, assuring that Boland remains an integral part of the setup going forward. Teenager Sam Konstas, who was in contention for a batting spot, has also been left out. But Cummins emphasised that the 19-year-old remains very much in Australia's long-term plans.
