Guyana Global Super League looks to take Champions League T20 vacuum as five teams confirm participation
More than 10 years after the Champions League T20 — a tournament that brought domestic T20 franchises together — a similar tournament that was successfully held in 2024 returns to the calendar once again in Guyana. Guyana Global Super League (GSL) has announced the tournament which includes five T20 teams from around the world will take place from July 10 to 18 at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence. The tournament will see Dubai Capitals (ILT20), Hobart Hurricanes (Big Bash), Central Stags (Super Smash), Rangpur Riders (BPL) and Guyana Amazon Warriors (CPL, finalists) facing each-other. Rangpur Riders were in the champions of the inaugural edition held last year which included Lahore Qalandars (PSL) and Hampshire Hawks (T20 Cup). In the final, Rangpur defeated Cricket Victoria to win the title. This time, the tournament will see Central Stags coming in place for County side Hampshire while Dubai Capitals in place of Lahore. There won't be any participation from SA20 and IPL. The Champions League T20 modelled on the concept of UEFA Champions League was a popular tournament held between 2009 to 2014 with Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians winning it twice each. After New South Wales won the inaugural edition in 2009, Sidney Sixers was the only other side to claim the trophy. While the tournament was supposed to be held alternatively in India, South Africa and Australia, it never materialised due to logistical challenges. It meant, only India and South Africa hosted the event with weather condition deemed not favourable for Australia to host the tournament in the September window. Domestic T20 teams from across all the Test playing nations had a shot at the tournament, but it was dominated by IPL franchises. However, after 2014 the tournament found no takers and despite calls from fans to revive it, there hasn't been any concrete effort to bring back the tournament.

Jeanes guides Glamorgan to cup win over Derbyshire
An unbeaten century from Daisy Jeanes steered Glamorgan to a comfortable nine-wicket win over Derbyshire in the Women's One Day Cup at Duffield. With Glamorgan chasing 214 to win, Jeanes hit 115 not out and captain Lauren Parfitt made 71 in an opening partnership of 159. Jeanes and Bethan Gammon (22 not out) took Glamorgan home with 13 overs to spare. Derbyshire were restricted to 213-7 despite an innings of 80 from opener Ella Porter. The home side were 151-2 at one point, but lost wickets steadily with two victims apiece for Eve Jackson, Gemma Porter and Sara Phillips. Glamorgan next face Lancashire Thunder in the third round of the T20 Cup at Brecon on Saturday, 17 May.

South Wales Premier League Division 1 USK CC took on three matches in three different competitions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday - and won them all. On Friday, they beat hosts Newbridge by 45 runs in the first round of the T20 Cup. After winning the toss, the home skipper decided to ask Usk to bat first and despite an early breakthrough opener Harswel Ahmed Wassam added a useful 54 runs. Tamoor Zafar (13) and Matthew Williams (22) kept the scoreboard ticking over and Ollie Rayner added 32 before being caught and bowled. Usk's innings ended on 166-7 with Matt Hancock and Sam Crisp unbeaten on 11 and six respectively. In reply, Newbridge lost wickets regularly thanks to Zafar (2-28), Crisp (1-18) and Rayner (1-8 and two maidens) and tumbled to defeat 121-6. Usk skipper Elliott Doyle said the pitch was very difficult to bat on, but there was a positive performance. 'Harawal Wassam is scoring runs effortlessly at the moment, a real class apart from everyone else today. It's great fun watching him,' he said. A day later, Usk players took on Ynystawe on their own ground, restricting the hosts to 114 all out, a total that Usk passed, losing only three wickets in the process to win by seven wickets. Ollie Rayner took 4-25 with one maiden while Matthew Marriott (3-25), Billy Root (2-44 and one maiden) and Tamoor Zafar took a wicket with just three deliveries and Ben Jones's six overs cost just 20 runs and included a maiden. In reply, Hugo Caldicott scored 61 off 66 deliveries and Rayner was 27 not out and Root added 15 before being caught. On Sunday, Usk played a Group 10 match at Bath in the ECB National Club Championship. After winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Hugo Caldicott scored 62 but lost opening partner Matthew Williams early on. He was replaced by Ollie Rayner who added 27 and Harawal Ahmed Wassam chipped in with a run-a-ball 59 runs and skipper Elliott Doyle added a valuable 22 runs and the 40-over innings ended with Usk on 243-7. In a nail-biting finish, Bath's innings ended on 228 all out - 15 runs behind thanks to Ben Jones 3-42 with one maiden, Tamoor Zafar (3-44), Matthew Marriott (2-41) and Matthew Williams (2-53). Doyle said: "The win at Bath was the best game of my life, best game of any of our lives, I think. Absolutely outstanding game of cricket. Ben Jones at third man took the winning catch."

Pakistan women's cricketer Nida Dar withdraws from national selection due to mental health issues
Pakistan women's team veteran Nida Dar has withdrawn from national selection because of mental health issues, a first in the country's cricket. Nida, 39, a former captain of the national women's team, said in a social media post on Friday that she has taken a break from cricket. 'In the past few months, a lot has happened around me personally and professionally, which has taken a toll on my mental health. Therefore, I have decided to take a break from cricket to focus on myself. I request everyone to respect my privacy during this time,' she said. Nida, who has played 270 matches across ODIs and T20 internationals, was asked to make herself available for the selection of the team for the ICC Women's World Cup qualifiers held recently in Lahore. Nida made an appearance for a fitness test but later withdrew when asked to report for a training camp. She said that recent events in both her personal and professional life have significantly impacted her mental well-being. She also didn't play in the women's national T20 Cup recently.
