Irene Villagers Cricket Club ends season as top club in various leagues
After this club in Centurion won their first ever Premier League title four years ago, they not only repeated the achievement this past season, but also dominated several other leagues.
Irene Villagers Cricket Club had a truly remarkable 2024/2025 season. The club's achievements include:
Men's Premier League first team was crowned champions. They beat Tuks, who normally dominate the league, to the top position. In the final league match they had a nine wicket win against Tuks to claim the crown as league champions.
Irene Villagers' first team shared the men's T20 Cup with Tuks due to a rain-affected final. They were in a dominant position when the match was called off.
Irene Villagers' Women's Premier League first team was also crowned champions. With this achievement, they won their sixth title in seven seasons.
The club's Men's second team were shared winners of the Reserve League and won the Reserve League T20 Cup.
After the season, Irene Villagers Cricket Club also received a great honour when they were named the winner of the Club of Excellence award at the Titans Cricket Union's annual awards ceremony. They won this award for a fourth year in a row.
'It is a proud moment to witness the members of Villagers and Irene Country Club lift both the men's and women's Premier League trophies, along with the prestigious Club of Excellence award – a triple triumph rooted in camaraderie and a deep sense of belonging,' said the club's chairman, Pierre Coetzer.
According to Coetzer, this achievement is powered by a world-class training program.
'Irene Villagers is where players grow together, play for one another and pursue greatness as one,' he remarked.
Doug Yates, director of cricket at Irene Villagers, who oversees coaching for the men's and women's first teams, agreed that it has been a standout season for the club.
'The fact that our men's first team was able to break Tuks' dominance to win the Premier League, alongside sharing the T20 Cup final from a strong position, was a major statement. The women's team claiming their sixth title in seven years shows their continued excellence, while our men's second team's double success in the Reserve League and T20 competition speaks to the depth we've built,' he commented.
For Yates, the club's award as Club of Excellence for the fourth consecutive year was the icing on the cake.
'It is the perfect reflection of the hard work across all levels of the club,' he concluded.
Irene Villagers Cricket Club was established in 1965 and is a section of the Irene Country Club. It is one of the largest cricket affiliated clubs in the Titans Cricket Union with 24 teams across the juniors, ladies and gentlemen cricket sections, including two Veteran's team for players older than 40.

Liverpool fan banned from all UK stadiums for racially abusing Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo
English referee Anthony Taylor (R) speaks with both coaches and the stadium safety officer after a Liverpool supporter shouted racist abuse at Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo during the Premier League match between Liverpool and Bournemouth at Anfield. Photo: Paul Ellis/AFP A man arrested on suspicion of racially abusing Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo during the opening game of the Premier League season has been banned from every football stadium in the UK. The match against Liverpool at Anfield on Friday was briefly stopped in the first half after Semenyo reported the incident to the referee. A 47-year-old man from Liverpool has been released on bail after he was arrested the following day on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence, Merseyside Police said on Monday. As part of his bail conditions, he cannot attend any regulated football match in the UK, and is not allowed within a mile of any football stadium.

Forest sign French forward Kalimuendo
French striker Arnaud Kalimuendo has signed a five-year contract with Nottingham Forest, the Premier League club announced on Monday. According to French media, the transfer paid to ex-club Rennes is believed to be at least 30 million euros ($35 million). "Nottingham Forest is delighted to announce the signing of Arnaud Kalimuendo, who joins the club on a five-year deal," read a statement on the English club's website. The 23-year-old came through the ranks at Paris Saint-Germain, before enjoying a breakthrough season at Ligue 1 side Rennes last year when he netted 18 times in 34 appearances in all competitions. Prior to joining Rennes in 2022, he made five appearances for PSG and enjoyed success during loan spells at Lens -- scoring 21 goals in 65 outings. "When I heard about the interest from Forest, I was honoured. This is a proud moment for me, joining a team who had a strong season last year and a club with great history," said Kalimuendo. "I'm ready for the challenge, and I arrive here with good experience. I had a good season last year with goals and assists but I want more and want to reach a new level here." Two-time European champions Nottingham Forest finished the 2024/25 season in seventh place after surprisingly spending much of the season in the Premier League's top three. Before the start of the new campaign, manager Nuno Espirito Santo endured a disappointing pre-season -- no wins and only one goal scored in seven matches -- and a disappointing transfer window. However, Forest kickstarted the season with a comfortable 3-1 win over Brentford on Sunday and new signings have begun arriving at the City Ground. The recent additions of winger Dan Ndoye, playmaker Omari Hutchinson and ex-Manchester City midfielder James McAtee have bolstered Nuno's squad.

FIFA boss condemns racial abuse in German Cup games
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has condemned the alleged racial abuse which occurred during two German Cup fixtures on the weekend as "unacceptable", in a statement issued Monday. "I repeat myself and will continue to do so. There is no place for racism in football," Infantino said in the statement. On Sunday, a match between home side Lokomotive Leipzig and Schalke was halted after winger Christopher Antwi-Adjei said he was racially abused by home spectators. An announcement on the stadium PA was made condemning racist abuse. After the match resumed, the winger was booed repeatedly by the home support and Lokomotive issued an apology later on Sunday. Also on Sunday, a player from visiting side Kaiserslautern also alleged racial abuse from a member of the crowd at club RSV Eintracht. Infantino said FIFA would "continue to closely monitor these incidents" and promised to work with the German FA (DFB) "in the fight against racism". The incidents come after Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo alleged he was racially attacked by a member of the crowd in Friday's Premier League season opener at Liverpool. Play was halted after Semenyo reported he was abused by someone in the crowd during the first half of Liverpool's 4-2 win, with Merseyside Police later arresting a man for a racially aggravated public order offence. Semenyo later said on social media the incident would "stay with him forever" but added the response by players and officials meant "football showed its best side when it mattered most". Infantino, who also issued a statement on Sunday after the Semenyo incident, said Monday it was "absolutely unacceptable that racist abuse has occurred at football matches for the second time in recent days".
