Vizianagaram police launch ‘Palle Nidra' to build trust in rural areas
The Vizianagaram police department has launched an innovative programme, 'Palle Nidra.' Under the programme, senior police officers including circle-inspectors, sub-inspectors spend nights in rural areas and interact with the locals. Before having dinner with the villagers, officers will hold group meetings in community halls and nearby temples to understand the grievances of the community. Vizianagaram Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal told The Hindu that the programme is part of friendly policing, while getting to know the law and order situation in the villages and mandal headquarters. According to him, 'Disputes among locals can escalate into tensions. By staying overnight and interacting with locals, officers can resolve the issues on the spot. Many people hesitate to come to the police stations, through this exercise they can express their views easily when the officers hold 'ice breaking' sessions.' Additionally, the programme also serves as a data-collection exercise. Officers get to know the rowdies, ganja peddlers, trouble makers and other details. 'Around 300 officers have already participated and stayed in villages in the last few weeks. The initiative will continue for a few more months since the feedback from officers and locals is positive, ' he added.
