'Man Utd need clarity but Rashford in no rush'

BBC News24-04-2025

BBC's chief football news reporter Simon Stone has been discussing the uncertainty around Marcus Rashford's future on the World Football podcast: "It felt like when Rashford went to Aston Villa that there was no way back and I think nothing that's happened since then gives any indication that the situation has changed."Manchester United want clarity because Ruben Amorim needs to know how much money he is going to get. Qualifying for the Champions League is going to have a big impact on that."Rashford is on a huge amount of money, far more really than anyone else apart from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. When he went to Aston Villa, United agreed to pay part of his salary. The difficulty is how do you do a deal like that early in the summer."I don't think either Rashford or the people around Rashford are wanting to get involved in a swap-deal scenario at all. They are massively complicated."I suspect it is going to be one of those deals that is not done until far nearer the start of the season, if not the transfer window deadline."United cannot think that they're going to drive this situation, and I don't get the impression that Rashford is in any big rush to make a decision."Listen to the full episode on BBC Sounds

Dundee United seal Iurie Iovu deal as Jim Goodwin hails 'fearless' stopper

Dundee United have completed the signing of towering Moldova international Iurie Iovu. The 6ft5ins central defender has penned a two-year deal with the Tannadice outfit, with no transfer fee involved, and becomes the club's second capture in 24 hours following the arrival of Zac Sapsford. The Terrors hold an option for a further season, should Iovu thrive. Iovu, 22, joins from Croatian side NK Istra, while he has also been on the books of Zimbru Chisinau, Cagliari, Venezia and Alaves B. The first Moldovan to ever join United, Iovu boasts four senior caps and is hopeful the switch to Scotland could help him cement a regular place with the national side. United boss Jim Goodwin told the club's official website: 'Iurie is a player we identified as one of our first targets for the summer window thanks to his dominant displays across three different European countries. 'He is a committed and fearless defender with an infectious level of controlled aggression when carrying out his duties, and boasts the ideal set of physical attributes to thrive in the Scottish Premiership. 'Iurie also has the potential to develop into a fantastic asset for the club further down the line. In the short-term however, we have unwavering confidence in his ability to strengthen our backline across the next few seasons.'

Arsenal reignite interest in Newcastle and Chelsea target as asking price slashe

Arsenal are showing an interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi again, as the defender heads into the final year of his contract. The 24-year-old was a target for the Gunners 12 months ago, along with a number of other clubs including Newcastle, Liverpool and his former team Chelsea. The Eagles stuck firm to their lofty asking price of £70m and no deal was done, with Guehi staying put and going on to win the FA Cup with Palace. However, the England international's contract at Selhurst Park expires next year so his price tag will be significantly lower this summer. The Mirror report that with Guehi now much more affordable than a year ago, Arsenal's interest has been reignited, although their pursuit of him will not be straightforward. Not only will there be plenty of competition again from their Premier League rivals, but the 23-cap England international may take some convincing to move to the Emirates. Mikel Arteta has established a very reliable partnership at centre-back in Gabriel and William Saliba, one that will not easily be broken. Gabriel signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal earlier this month and the club is working on Saliba doing the same. There is interest from Real Madrid in the Frenchman and the Gunners are very keen to keep hold of the impressive centre-back. That puts in question their interest in Guehi as he will not want to move to any club where he would not be a guaranteed starter. The Athletic report that Arteta wants genuine competition to his first-choice central defenders and Arsenal made a move for Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen before he made his £50m transfer to Real Madrid. Newcastle made three bids for Guehi last summer, going as high as £60m, but could not convince Palace to sell. With a return to the Champions League, the Magpies could come back with another offer as he is now likely available for less than they bid in 2024. Joined from Chelsea in July 2021 for £18m Appearances: 155 Goals: 8 Trophies: 2024/25 FA Cup Guehi has offered little on his future, saying before Palace beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final: 'My only focus is this game. 'My only focus is the fact that I am under contract at Palace. So as far as I am concerned, I am a Palace player.' Last month The Sun reported that Guehi may choose to run down his contract at Crystal Palace and see his options expand further when he will be available on a free transfer next summer. Real Madrid and Barcelona have been touted as possible destinations for the defender if he were to leave Selhurst Park on a free. MORE: When does the transfer window reopen and why has it closed? Rio Ferdinand's brutal two-word England verdict after Senegal humiliation

England lost to Senegal at Nottingham Forest's City Ground and a poor performance left Thomas Tuchel with plenty to think about after two disappointing outings in a row Rio Ferdinand was almost left in disbelief as England fell to a 3-1 defeat to Senegal at the City Ground. The Three Lions gave up a 1-0 lead thanks to some questionable defending to lose for the first time in Thomas Tuchel's tenure. Former England international Ferdinand was quick to respond to Senegal's third goal. After a ferocious counter-attack which saw the visitors outnumber their hosts, Cheikh Sabaly cemented the African side's win with a goal in stoppage time. ‌ Ex-United defender Ferdinand offered a simple response on social media. "Wow… England," he said. ‌ It was an unimpressive display from Tuchel's fourth match in charge, as England failed to defend well for either of Senegal's opening two goals. Harry Kane had given the home side the lead before Ismaila Sarr and Habib Diarra saw Senegal rally. England captain Kane was forthright in his assessment. The performance wasn't good enough. "We're not going to panic but we know we have to be better," he said. "There's some ideas which are new, some new players coming in who don't have experience internationally. There's no excuses, we have to find it quick." ITV pundit Roy Keane was equally critical of England's reaction to their setbacks as much as the errors themselves. The ex-Republic of Ireland and Manchester United captain wanted to see a more forceful response on the pitch. "Even the first two goals [England] conceded tonight, I don't see them getting hold of each other," he said. "You don't throw each other under the bus but you start shouting at each other telling them to do their job. ‌ 'For the second goal, they are having a chat like they are in Starbucks, 'Maybe I should have gone for that.' "Do your job! That is what good team-mates do. Do your job or we are in trouble.' Keane believes there were things that should concern Tuchel. "England, on the one hand you don't want to over-react but the signs aren't great," he said. ‌ "It's been a bad couple of days for them. They have the dream start, they go 1-0 up, they made some good changes but it won't be a good summer break for the manager. "He'll be concerned. We're on the outside looking in, but there's something missing. They don't look like a happy group. "Not in the sense of being disappointed with the result, are they all in it together? Is there that proper spirit in the group? I'm not so sure."
