AU, first state-run university in country, offering B.Tech prog in Quantum Computing

Visakhapatnam: In alignment with Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's vision and paving the way for cutting-edge career opportunities in multinational companies, Andhra University introduced B.Tech programme in Quantum Computing. With an initial intake of 30 students arriving from neighbouring districts and states, the four-year-long undergraduate programme focuses on providing not just interdisciplinary curriculum plus hands-on training but also facilitating real-time industry collaborations, capstone projects and global exposure.
Designed to equip students with foundational knowledge in digital electronics, quantum mechanics, quantum computing and specialised algorithms, among several other allied disciplines, the course integrates theory with practical training in programming platforms such as Qiskit and Cirq.
In a technology-driven world, the government of India aims to propel the nation to the forefront of quantum technology research and development as part of the National Quantum Mission (NQM). The key focus areas of the mission include research proposals and building exclusive UG laboratories.
Underlining that Quantum Computing is a rapidly evolving domain with a shortage of skilled professionals, Andhra University Vice Chancellor Prof. GP Raja Sekhar emphasised that the world is focusing on quantum computing for apparent reasons. 'As of today, we do not have a structured undergraduate programme in this area. Unless we work aggressively on this, it is difficult to cater to future needs. AU introduced minor and UG courses this academic year (2025-2026) to bridge the gap between increasing demand for skilled professionals and their low supply,' the VC shared with The Hans India.
Apart from focusing on fundamentals in quantum computing, the varsity is facilitating classes in algorithms, optimisation, communication networks, sensors and cryptography, among others.
A plan of action is in place to enhance capacity building of the faculty members as well. Currently, high-end labs are being accessed in a virtual mode.
Working in tandem with the NQM, the Andhra Pradesh government plans to set up a Quantum Valley in Amaravati and the state is set to draw top researchers and global innovation and investments to build a robust quantum ecosystem. 'Going forward, a large number of research proposals will be submitted by AU for the NQM along with the proposal of setting up a UG laboratory on the campus. In the next six years, AU is set to grow aggressively to create a full-fledged ecosystem in quantum computing. We are pretty confident that all the 30 students in the first batch will be mapped with industries for their internship,' the VC assured.

In order to build institutional capacity in emerging frontier technologies, the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education is initiating a faculty development programme on quantum technologies in the last week of August. The RUSA-funded FDP will be held in collaboration with premier institutions such as DST, IIT-Madras, C-DAC Bangalore.
As a part of shaping a tech-driven ecosystem, a quantum computing workshop was held recently in Vijayawada wherein a team of Professors from Andhra University participated.
Setting a year aside as a buffer period, the varsity plans to work on capacity building and make the allied departments completely equipped to impart quantum computing from the third semester.
Also, with top rankers evincing keen interest in joining the programme, the AU administration is gearing up to usher in more students for the sought-after course in future.

Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu-led Andhra Pradesh government has launched a crackdown on renewable energy developers sitting on land parcels without initiating work and has ordered scrutiny of projects worth ₹4 lakh crore. In the first action, the government has cancelled a 328 MW wind power project allocated to Sreeja Infrastructure, a subsidiary of the Italian renewable energy major Enel Green, which was recently acquired by Gujarat-based Waaree Energies . The project was sanctioned in 2018 when Naidu was in power. However, the Capacity Sanction Agreement, required for formal commencement of work, was signed in 2022 under the previous Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP government. The company had to complete the project in 24 months by December 2024. The government has now cancelled the project and ordered forfeiture of performance bank guarantee worth ₹6.5 crore. Over the last two weeks, two hydro projects have also been cancelled for delayed implementation. The Naidu-led administration has now sought updated implementation status and timelines from all renewable projects allotted in the state, covering over 60 GW of capacity. This forms part of a broader audit aimed at unlocking stalled green energy potential in Andhra Pradesh. Sources said projects with an investment worth ₹4 lakh crore are under scrutiny. These include big players like Axis Energy, Suzlon Energy , Indosol and Ecoren. According to sources, close to 36 project sites have been allotted to three investors with no progress on ground. Indosol has been allotted 1.52 lakh acres of land to develop 3000 MW project, Ecoren has been allotted 4.35 lakh acres to develop 3500 MW capacity at six locations and Axis has 15.13 lakh acres of land to develop 12,000 MW capacity at different locations. Sources indicated that the government is serious about taking action against those sitting on solar and wind resources and action against Sreeja Infrastructure is to signal that failure to commence work immediately would result in cancellation and penalties. "This is not just about enforcing deadlines. This is about reclaiming credibility, land, and clean energy targets," said an official adding, "Valuable wind zones are being locked up by companies that are not acting. In a resource-constrained geography like ours, we can't afford such strategic delays." Unlike government land leases, Sreeja's project is slated to be built on private land, but the government had already earmarked exclusive wind coordinates for the project, effectively blocking any other renewable developer from using the site. With limited high-velocity wind zones in Andhra Pradesh, these land-coordinate allocations are prized assets. For Naidu, who returned to power with a strong development agenda, the message is clear - land is not to be hoarded, and renewable energy, once allotted, must translate into megawatts on the grid. The government has set a target of 160 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Sri City: The foundation stone for a long-awaited infrastructure upgrade at the Sri City entry point on National Highway-16 was laid virtually on Sunday by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The Rs 45-crore project includes the construction of a 900-meter grade-separated junction, a critical development aimed at ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow on NH 16 while providing a dedicated underpass for vehicles entering and exiting Sri City. By aligning intersecting roads at different levels, the design eliminates stopping and crossing conflicts, significantly enhancing traffic mobility. Once completed, the upgrade will improve connectivity between Sri City and key destinations such as Chennai, Nellore, and Krishnapatnam Port. It is expected to ease congestion, reduce delays for cargo trucks and commuter buses, and maintain the smooth movement of highway traffic. Currently, heavy traffic at the junction poses challenges for long cargo vehicles and employee buses, causing operational delays. The new grade separator is set to resolve these issues by enabling seamless entry and exit, quicker turnaround times, and more reliable logistics for industries in the region. Sri City Managing Director Dr Ravindra Sannareddy stated that the project will greatly improve the movement of cargo and other vehicles, reducing waiting times and enhancing accessibility for both industries and workers. He said that the development will boost the efficiency of the Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor and align with the broader economic goals of the State. With established multi-modal connectivity – by road, rail, and proximity to major ports – Sri City has emerged as a preferred destination for global manufacturers. This infrastructure boost further strengthens its logistical edge, enabling faster and more efficient cargo movement.
