Watch: Rashid Khan's Outrageous 'Snake Shot' In The Hundred Goes Viral
Oval Invincibles' lead all-rounder Rashid Khan had one of the most roller-coaster days of his career on Tuesday in The Hundred match against Birmingham Phoenix. With his primary skill, bowling, he conceded 59 runs off 20 balls without any wickets, making it the most expensive spell not only in the competition's history but also Rashid's T20 (The Hundred is considered a T20 for statistical purposes) career.
However, with the bat and in the field, he was extraordinary as usual. As the Invincibles batted first, Rashid scored 16 runs off nine balls, including two sixes. One of the maximums was his trademark 'Snake Shot'. Tim Southee tried a wide yorker on the 90th ball of the innings and Rashid, who had already shuffled across, bent low to horizontally slap it over deep square leg for a 56-metre six.
The shot has been named by the Afghan himself.
'I call it the Snake Shot," he revealed during IPL 2022. 'When a snake bites someone it springs back. When the ball is too full, I can't finish the shot completely. My body position doesn't allow me to finish the shot. If I try to do that, I can't generate the power. So I have worked on it a lot and strengthened my wrists for it," he added.
His fielding was just as brilliant on the day. With Phoenix chasing 181, Joe Clarke sliced a drive to deep point flatly. Rashid came running from deep cover, and though he was a bit far, he put in a forward slide and got his hands just underneath to grab it.
The Invincibles lost the match. Liam Livingstone remained not out at 69 off 27, including 26 runs off just five balls against Rashid. The spinner just couldn't get his lengths and speeds right on the day, and although he showed how valuable an asset he is still, Rashid would know he can be much better for the team.

Alex Carey Not Chasing Wicketkeeping Role After Inglis' Arrival: 'I Don't Mind...'
Last Updated: Alex Carey thrives as a specialist batter in Australia's ODI team, happy with Josh Inglis as wicketkeeper. Australia's Test wicketkeeper Alex Carey is enjoying his new role as a specialist batter in the ODI team and has no desire to take back the gloves from current keeper Josh Inglis. Carey served as Australia's wicketkeeper in 50-over matches for five years until he was dropped after just one game in the 2023 World Cup, with Inglis then becoming the main choice. The 33-year-old Carey returned to the playing eleven in England last September when Inglis suffered a quad injury, immediately scoring 69 and 61. He also contributed in the field with a remarkable one-handed catch to dismiss Phil Salt. 'I guess you never say never. We're pretty clear at the moment on where that sits. Both of us are pretty happy with that. I think it's worked pretty well in the last six months. Any chance I get to play for Australia, I'm happy." 'I don't mind running around in the field and getting some Ks into the legs. I was out of the team for a little while post-World Cup and to be able to get back in and play some cricket in the white-ball format, it's been great. Happy to play whatever the role," Carey told reporters on Sunday. Carey was called into the T20I squad for the recent series against South Africa to cover for the unwell Inglis. He said these extra few days with the team helped him prepare for the ODI series. The unexpected recall gave Carey his first T20I in over four years, which he admitted he enjoyed. With the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup approaching, Carey insists he still has the drive to make an impact in the shortest format. Australia clinched a two-wicket win over South Africa in the third T20I to secure a 2-1 series victory on Saturday. They will next face the Proteas in a three-match ODI series starting on August 19. Not Jurel! Harsha Bhogle Names 31-Year-Old As Samson's Backup Keeper For Asia Cup
Last Updated: Harsha Bhogle has selected Jitesh Sharma as backup wicketkeeper for Asia Cup, favouring him over Dhruv Jurel because of his impressive IPL performance. Star Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle has picked Jitesh Sharma as the backup wicketkeeper to Sanju Samson for the upcoming Asia Cup, with no place for Dhruv Jurel in the 15-member squad for the tournament, which is all set to begin next month and is expected to rack the selectors' minds. Jitesh has impressed as a finisher in IPL 2025, highlighted by his unbeaten 85 against the Lucknow Super Giants, while Jurel has shown his versatility in recent limited-overs matches. Jitesh's international record for India is underwhelming, averaging a dismal 14.28 in nine T20Is with 100 runs and a top score of 35. 'You have Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, then Shreyas Iyer and then if you want someone to keep wickets, it is one of those rare sights when none of the other batters are keeping wickets, then you can play Jitesh Sharma down the order," Bhogle said while speaking on his YouTube channel. 'In case you want flexibility at the top, then you use Jitesh, who has had a fabulous IPL and whose reinvention of himself as the T20 finisher has been extraordinary. He gives you the other wicketkeeping option down the order, Sanju is the option at the top of the order," Bhogle said. None of India's Test skipper Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal made the commentator's 15-man T20I squad for the Asia Cup. He picked Abhishek, captain Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Iyer as the four batters. 'Gill is coming off a fantastic Test series and there is a World Test Championship to be won as much as the Asia Cup. He goes for the latter and he has got five days to come back and get ready for the Test series against the Windies," Bhogle said. 'Gill remains captain of the Indian Test side and doesn't let his now near-pristine technique suddenly get affected by white-ball and then come back to red ball. One needs to look at Gill with the T20 World Cup round the corner but there is a little bit of time for that," Bhogle added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ICC Mourns Bob Simpson's Passing: 'One Of The True Greats'
Last Updated: The ICC mourned the passing of former Australia captain Bob Simpson, who died at 89. The ICC expressed condolences on Sunday for the passing of former Australia captain Bob Simpson, emphasizing his significant contributions as a player, captain, and coach during the team's ascent to the pinnacle of world cricket in the 1990s. Simpson, an iconic figure in Australian cricket, died on Saturday at the age of 89. ICC chairman Jay Shah, in a statement, lauded Simpson's contributions, stating he would be remembered for a long time. 'Bob Simpson was one of the true greats of our sport, and it is deeply saddening to learn of his passing. His legacy is immense. As a player, captain, and later as a coach, he shaped Australian cricket and inspired the global game," said Shah. 'He nurtured and guided a generation of players who went on to become legends in their own right, and his influence extended far beyond the field. 'On behalf of the International Cricket Council, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire cricket fraternity. His passing is a profound loss for the game, but his contributions will always be remembered and cherished," he added. An ICC Hall of Famer, Simpson played 62 Tests for Australia between 1957 and 1978, amassing 4,869 runs at an average of 46.81, including 10 centuries, 27 half-centuries, and a highest score of 311. A skilled leg-spinner, he claimed 71 wickets at 42.26, with two five-wicket hauls and best figures of five for 57. He was also a sharp fielder, taking 110 catches. Simpson retired in 1968 but made a notable comeback as Test captain in 1978 at the age of 41, leading a weakened Australia side. Post-retirement, he became Australia's first full-time coach and served as a national selector. His 10 Test centuries were all scored while captaining the Australian team, including a remarkable 311 against England in Manchester in 1964.
