Telangana blast: Won families' approval for their union, couple among deceased

Till a couple of months ago, Nikhil Reddy (30) and N Sriramya (28), who were struggling to get their parents convinced about their love, had finally succeeded in winning their acceptance and were all set to get married in a grand manner the last week of July. However, both died when a blast ripped through a pharmaceutical plant in the Sangareddy district of Telangana on Monday. Bereaved family members of the deceased victims of Sigachi Industries' pharma plant explosion mourn outside Patancheru government hospital, in Sangareddy district, Telangana, on Tuesday (PTI)
According to the officials, 143 people were present at a plant of Sigachi Industries at Pashamylaram, around 50 km from Hyderabad, when a powerful explosion took place at 9:20am, triggering a blaze and caving in a three-storey building. According to the update on Tuesday, at least 37 people were killed and 20 bodies still remained untraceable .
Telugu Desam Party (TDP) legislator Kolikapudi Srinivas Rao from Thiruvuru assembly constituency in Krishna district, who played a key role in bringing the families of Nikhil and Sriramya together, said Nikhil, a resident of Jammalamadugu in Kadapa district, had completed his MSc and joined the Sigachi company three years ago.
'Sriramya, from Putrela village in Tiruvuru, also joined the same company after completing her MSc. Their friendship at the workplace gradually turned into love. But their families initially opposed the marriage due to caste differences,' he recalled.
He said the couple had approached him for help and he spoke to both the families to convince them to accept the marriage. 'With all obstacles cleared, the couple decided to hold their wedding ceremony in the last week of July after the completion of Ashadha month, which is inauspicious for marriage,' he said.
'When I came to know about the explosion at the factory, I immediately tried to reach out to both Nikhil and Ramya, but there was no response. I rushed to the factory site, only to find that they were crushed under the collapsed slab of the administrative building,' Rao said.
The mortuary of the Patancheru government hospital was reverberating with the cries and woes of the relatives of the Pashamylaram accident victims. 'What is there to see? I lost my husband. They have asked me to wait till evening to collect the body after post-mortem examination,' said a wailing woman, whose husband – VRG Nageshwara Rao, assistant manager (operations) at the Sigachi Industries — was charred to death in the blast.
Another victim, 24-year-old Bheem Rao from Kamareddy district had joined the job at Sigachi Industries two days ago and on the second day of his job, he was crushed under the debris and is battling for life in the hospital.
'He was extremely jubilant on the first day of his job. But the very next day, the tragedy struck us. Doctors say he is critical and there is not much hope,' Bheem's wife Sonu told reporters at the hospital.
Another woman from Bihar, who did not identify herself, was wailing inconsolably, as the police prevented her from entering the factory premises in search of her lost husband. 'He came to the factory at 8 am for the morning shift, but did not return till evening and I was told about the blast in the factory,' she said.
She said she had gone around different hospitals, but could not find her husband. 'Why are they not telling me where he is? They should tell me no, which hospital they admitted him to?' she asked.
Majority of the victims are reportedly from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh 'Since many bodies were charred beyond recognition, it is very difficult to track their families,' an official at the plant site said.
Mithilesh Mukhiya travelled all the way from Darbhanga in Bihar, in search of his brother Laxmi Mukhiya, a 29-year-old production operator who had been working at Sigachi Industries for a decade. 'My brother's name is on the list of missing persons. I couldn't find him in any hospital. These people are not allowing me inside the factory to check,' he said.
Another man said his uncle was working in the factory at the time of the explosion. 'I am not able to trace him and there is none to answer my query as to where I can find him or his body,' he said.
The district administration has set up a help desk at the factory premises to note down the details of the missing persons from their relatives who came there for enquiry. Forensic teams are racing against time to complete DNA tests on the unidentified bodies.
'We shall try to identify the bodies and match their DNA samples with the relatives, so that we can hand over the bodies to the right persons,' a forensic department official from Osmania General Hospital said.

Disha Salian death case: Police rule out foul play; Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena UBT demands apology from CM Fadnavis

The Mumbai Police on Thursday told the Bombay High Court that former celebrity manager Disha Salian had committed suicide and no foul play was found in her death, even as her father Satish Salian reiterated she was gangraped and murdered. According to a PTI report, the police said in its affidavit that Disha had jumped off the window of a flat of her own volition, and the postmortem report mentioned no signs of sexual and/or physical assault on her body. The affidavit was filed before the High Court last month. She was under tremendous mental stress due to a dispute with her family and also because her business deals were not working out, the affidavit added. The former celebrity manager died on June 8, 2020, after falling off the 14th floor of a residential building in Malad area of Mumbai. The city police had then registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR). Satish Salian filed a petition in the HC in March this year, seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into his daughter's death and an FIR against Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray. In the plea, he claimed his daughter was found dead under mysterious circumstances in June 2020. He alleged that she was raped and murdered and subsequently there was a politically orchestrated cover-up to protect certain influential persons. The petition came up for hearing on Wednesday before a bench headed by Justice AS Gadkari, which posted it for further hearing on July 16. The Malvani police, who probed the case first, in their affidavit, however, said Disha Salian had committed suicide. An affidavit filed by Malvani police station's senior inspector Shailendra Nagarkar said that Disha was under tremendous mental stress due to a dispute with her family. In the report, it was mentioned that she was under stress also because her business deals were not working out, according to PTI. The report also said that she was drunk at the time of the incident. Foul play was ruled out by her fiancé, who was with her at the time of the incident. "I say that in the light of the circumstances and witness statements, the deceased Disha Salian out of her own volition jumped off the window of the flat and committed suicide," the police officer said in the affidavit. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Thursday demanded an apology from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and minister Nitesh Rane over their past remarks against Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray in connection with Disha Salian death case. According to the PTI report, Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam, however, said "no closure report" has been filed yet in the case and the investigation is still underway. "The police report has clearly stated that Aaditya Thackeray had no involvement in Disha Salian's death. Yet, power was misused to malign his image and humiliate him," Raut told reporters in Mumbai. 'Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis should apologise to Thackeray. (BJP MP) Narayan Rane's son, who is also a cabinet minister (Nitesh Rane), should apologise not only to Aaditya Thackeray but also to the people of Maharashtra,' the Rajya Sabha member said. "Everyone who made baseless allegations should issue a public apology. Those defaming others for political gains will pay a heavy price one day," he said.

Maharashtra minister Yogesh Kadam says speaking Marathi in state must: ‘If anyone disrespects…'

Maharashtra minister Yogesh Kadam on Wednesday said speaking Marathi in the state is a must and warned that any perceived disrespect to the language would invite legal consequences. Yogesh Kadam's statement comments came amid outrage over a viral video showing a food stall owner in Thane being assaulted for allegedly refusing to speak in Marathi. Maharashtra minister of state for home Yogesh Kadam talks to the media in Mumbai.(PTI file) 'In Maharashtra, you have to speak Marathi. If you don't know Marathi, your attitude shouldn't be that you won't speak Marathi,' Yogesh Kadam told reporters. 'If anyone disrespects Marathi in Maharashtra, we will enforce our laws,' the minister said. Kadam, however, also criticised the manner in which the incident unfolded. 'Those who beat up the shopkeeper should not have taken the law into their own hands. They should have filed a complaint. Action would have been taken,' he added. The incident took place in the Bhayander area on Tuesday evening and sparked widespread outrage after a video went viral. In the footage, several men — some wearing scarves bearing the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) symbol — are seen confronting and assaulting the food vendor after he reportedly failed to respond in Marathi when asked. While purchasing food, one of them asked the stall owner to speak in Marathi, to which he questioned them back. This annoyed the man, who shouted at the stall owner. Some others who were with the man joined him and slapped the stall owner, a police official said. Based on the stall owner's complaint, the Kashimira Police registered an FIR against the persons under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and a probe was on into the case. Members of the MNS, led by Raj Thackeray, have been trying to push for the use of Marathi language in commercial establishments and banks in the state. Hindi should be part of curriculum: Maharashtra CM's wife The incident also comes at a time when the language debate has resurfaced in Maharashtra. On Wednesday, Amruta Fadnavis — wife of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis — said Hindi should be part of the school curriculum, as it helps connect people across regions. Her comment follows the state government's recent withdrawal of a decision to make Hindi a mandatory third language from Class 1 to 5, after backlash from opposition parties and Marathi language advocacy groups.

‘Human sacrifice at Kamakhya': False claim lands TV anchor, Raja Raghuvanshi's cousin in trouble with Guwahati police

A news TV anchor has landed in trouble with the police over a false claim of 'nar bali (human sacrifice)' at the Kamakhya temple in Assam, during a live conversation with a cousin of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was murdered allegedly by his wife and her lover during their honeymoon in Meghalaya earlier this year. Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati is among the most prominent Hindu shrines. (PTI File) The Guwahati Police Crime Branch summoned the news anchor along with Shrishti Raghuvanshi, a female cousin of Raja Raghuvanshi, over the alleged defamatory statement about the revered Hindu shrine, news agency ANI reported. The anchor and the channel were not named in the agency report. After the FIR was filed on charges of hurting religious sentiments, both the anchor and Raja Raghuvanshi's cousin were asked to appear before the investigation officer on June 23 and 24, but they have not done so till date, according to Ankur Jain, Joint Police Commissioner, Guwahati City Police. What happened on air The anchor, reported to be from a prominent English news channel, was interviewing Shrishti about Raja's initial disappearance in Meghalaya – the murder came to light later – when the anchor claimed that human sacrifice was carried out at as a practice at the temple in Meghalaya's neighbouring state of Assam. Shrishti purportedly agreed with the anchor's remarks during the live broadcast, the police said according to a report by NDTV. As outrage followed the false claims and the apparent suggestion that Raja may have been 'sacrificed', the channel and Shrishti apologised for a 'complete error of judgment'. Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi got married on May 11 and went for their honeymoon to Meghalaya just days later. The FIR said the anchor and Shrishti could not cite any source, religious authority or historical validation for their false claim. The anchor clearly presented the information as fact, it added. Case dominated headlines The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi made headlines for weeks as police investigation said Raja, 29, was murdered by his wife Sonam, 24, just days after they had left hometown Indore for their honeymoon in Meghalaya in May. Sonam, her alleged lover Raj and their accomplices killed Raja, police found. After an intense search for Sonam, who was reported missing while Raja's body was found, she resurfaced and surrendered. Raj and the three accomplices had already been arrested by then.
