‘Human sacrifice at Kamakhya': False claim lands TV anchor, Raja Raghuvanshi's cousin in trouble with Guwahati police
The Guwahati Police Crime Branch summoned the news anchor along with Shrishti Raghuvanshi, a female cousin of Raja Raghuvanshi, over the alleged defamatory statement about the revered Hindu shrine, news agency ANI reported. The anchor and the channel were not named in the agency report.
After the FIR was filed on charges of hurting religious sentiments, both the anchor and Raja Raghuvanshi's cousin were asked to appear before the investigation officer on June 23 and 24, but they have not done so till date, according to Ankur Jain, Joint Police Commissioner, Guwahati City Police. The anchor, reported to be from a prominent English news channel, was interviewing Shrishti about Raja's initial disappearance in Meghalaya – the murder came to light later – when the anchor claimed that human sacrifice was carried out at as a practice at the temple in Meghalaya's neighbouring state of Assam. Shrishti purportedly agreed with the anchor's remarks during the live broadcast, the police said according to a report by NDTV.
As outrage followed the false claims and the apparent suggestion that Raja may have been 'sacrificed', the channel and Shrishti apologised for a 'complete error of judgment'. Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi got married on May 11 and went for their honeymoon to Meghalaya just days later.
The FIR said the anchor and Shrishti could not cite any source, religious authority or historical validation for their false claim. The anchor clearly presented the information as fact, it added. Case dominated headlines

After an intense search for Sonam, who was reported missing while Raja's body was found, she resurfaced and surrendered. Raj and the three accomplices had already been arrested by then.

‘Will come again': Perpetrator leaves ‘shocking threat' in selfie taken while victim was unconscious
One of the most shocking aspects of the alleged rape of the 22-year-old woman IT professional at her apartment in a residential society of Pune is the threat message the perpetrator left on her phone in a selfie that he took with her while she was unconscious, the police have said. Probe suggests that the photo taken has been edited to write the text on it.' While the officer refused to share exact details of the text, he said it was on the lines of 'Don't leak. Or else I will make viral your photos'. The text goes on to say 'I will come again'. 'We can infer from the message that the perpetrator has also taken photos of the victim, which he threatened to release (online) if she reports the incident or shares that selfie with anyone,' the officer added. Another officer who is part of the probe said, 'The selfie taken on the victim's phone captures a small part of one side of the accused's face. We are working on that as a clue. A composite sketch of the accused is is being prepared based on the description given by the victim. As part of the probe, we will be examining her phone. Some of teams who are part of the investigation are looking into a bulk of technical data. This includes footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the residential society and those on the approach roads to it. Also the data of the phones that cell towers connected with at the time of the crime. And also the data from the computer based system that is used for the management of entry at the society. WB CM writes to Amit Shah over spike in fake social media content, cybercrime
Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote a letter to union home minister Amit Shah, raising her concern over the spike in provocative social media content and cybercrime. Mamata Banerjee had previously accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading misinformation and fake videos, especially during the violence in Murshidabad (PTI) 'I write to convey my deep concern over an issue that is increasingly posing serious challenges to public tranquillity and the social fabric of our nation – the proliferation of provocative content on some sections of the social media platforms and the alarming rise in cybercrimes,' Banerjee wrote in the letter. Banerjee had previously accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading misinformation and fake videos, especially during the violence in Murshidabad. 'Yesterday some news was spread that I have resigned. Police have registered an FIR. The jumla party only believes in divide-and-rule policy. Fake videos are being circulated every day. Earlier attempts were made to pass off videos of Gujarat riots as those from Murshidabad,' she had said on April 2. Police had suspended internet services in some parts of Murshidabad after violence broke out in West Bengal's Murshidabad district over the Waqf (Amendment) Act in April, to prevent the spread of misinformation. Videos of a mob attacking the block development office in Jalangi and ransacking the office of a railway gateman in Azimganj had surfaced on social media. 'Such content not only spreads misinformation but also has the potential to inflame communal sentiments, incite violence, disrupt societal harmony and indulge in crime against women,' Banerjee added. Banerjee also highlighted the surge in cybercrime and said it is 'growing both in complexity and in its detrimental impact.'
