Kashi Declaration advocates consensus against drug abuse
The Kashi Declaration also emphasised integrating spiritual, cultural, educational, and technological efforts to prevent addiction and support recovery.
It proposed institutional mechanisms for multi-ministerial coordination, including the formation of a Joint National Committee, annual progress reporting and a national platform for linking affected individuals to support services.
Organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the summit gathered over 600 youth leaders, representatives from 120+ spiritual and socio-cultural organisations, academicians, and domain experts.
'The Kashi Declaration is not just a document, but a shared Sankalp (resolve) for the Yuva Shakti of Bharat,' stated Union minister for youth affairs and sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya.
'Bharat's Spiritual strength has always guided Bharat through its crises. This is why spiritual institutions must now lead the charge in creating a Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat. They will serve as the backbone of this Maha Abhiyan,' he added.
Himachal Pradesh governor Shiv Pratap Shukla said: 'This sacred land of Kashi is the cradle of Sanatan Chetna (eternal consciousness), where discipline and values guide life's journey towards moksha. We are not just gathering; we are sowing seeds that will one day grow into a strong tree of national transformation.'
He further cautioned: 'If a nation where 65% of the population is youth falls prey to addiction, only those who break free from it will be able to build the future.'
The summit featured deliberations across four plenary sessions.
These deliberations formed the foundation of the Kashi Declaration that will serve as a guiding charter, with progress to be reviewed during the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2026.
The keynote address of Session 4 was delivered by Nitin Agarwal, minister of state (independent charge) for excise and prohibition, Uttar Pradesh.
Several dignitaries participated in sessions. They included Union minister for social justice and empowerment Dr Virendra Kumar, Union culture and tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Uttar Pradesh minister for labour and employment Anil Rajbhar, Union minister of state for home affairs Nityanand Rai, Union minister of state for youth affairs and sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse and Uttar Pradesh sports minister Girish Chandra Yadav. Khadse highlighted the misuse of digital platforms targeting school children and reiterated the government's zero-tolerance policy.

The Rajya Sabha passed the 'Bills of Lading, 2025' bill on the first day of the monsoon session on Monday, paving the way for Presidential assent to replace a colonial-era law. Tabled by the Union minister of ports, shipping & waterways (MoPSW) Sarbananda Sonowal, the passage of the bill marks a watershed moment for India's maritime sector, the ministry said. The bill, already passed by the Lok Sabha, now awaits Presidential assent to become law. Once enacted, it will replace the 169 year-old Indian Lading Act, 1856 with a modern, simplified, and globally aligned legal framework for maritime shipping documentation in India. The new law replaces archaic terminology with clear and business-friendly language, streamlining rights and obligations for carriers, shippers and lawful holders; reducing ambiguity in shipping documentation to lower litigation risks as well as strengthening India's position in global trade by aligning with international norms. Tabling the bill, Sonowal said, 'Today, as we reflect on the 76th year since the adoption of the Indian Constitution, it is the perfect moment to cast aside the remnants of colonial and pre-constitutional legacies that hinder our progress. 'Swarnim Bharat' needs a statute that is contemporary, crafted by our own people, and capable of addressing the challenges of the modern era.' The bill renames the outdated law, symbolising a decisive move away from India's colonial past. It simplifies legal language, restructures complex provisions, and introduces an enabling clause empowering the central government to issue directions for effective implementation. By incorporating a standard repeal and saving clause, the legislation ensures continuity and legal validity of past actions under the old Act. These reforms aim to enhance clarity, promote ease of understanding, and enable smoother enforcement in line with contemporary trade and legal standards enabling Ease of Doing Business in India, the ministry said. Sonowal said, ''The Bills of Lading, 2025' bill reflects our constitutional values and marks a vital step in replacing outdated colonial laws with a modern, accessible framework. As our maritime sector expands rapidly, this reform will boost ease of doing business, reduce disputes, and strengthen India's global trade standing. As the saying goes — 'Whoever rules the waves, rules the world' — it's time India leads from the front.'

Tilakwadi residents appeal to PM to halt ROB construction

Belagavi: In a strong show of public opposition, hundreds of residents and shopkeepers from Tilakwadi, Belagavi wrote letters to PM Narendra Modi urging him to intervene and halt the construction of a proposed railway overbridge (ROB) at the 2nd Railway Gate. Instead, they are advocating for an elevated railway track on viaducts as a more sustainable and less disruptive alternative. Residents, particularly from Buda A scheme No. 8 colony, requested the PM to direct authorities to maintain the status quo of level crossing LC-382. Last month, the group met Union minister of state for railways V Somanna to voice their concerns. Disappointed by the lack of a concrete response, the residents escalated the issue to the PMO. According to the residents, the proposed ROB will significantly impact daily life by cutting off access to vital amenities such as schools, hospitals, and markets. The area hosts seven schools and ten nurseries, with nearly 6,000 students relying on the existing road network. They argue that the proposed narrow ROB design is unsafe for students, cyclists, and elderly residents. Locals also pointed out that the ROB is unscientifically planned, noting that four overbridges are already proposed within a 2-kilometre radius. Small businesses in the vicinity fear shutdown, resulting in job loss and an economic downturn. Further, the plan involves demolition of a century-old Ganesh temple, which has triggered cultural and religious concerns. As an alternative, the residents proposed raising the railway track on elevated viaducts. They argue that elevated rail lines would not only reduce ground-level disruption but also enhance safety by eliminating level crossing, improve train speed, and support long-term urban planning. Railways awards Rs 32.4 crore The ROB project was approved by the railway dept in 2018, and the contract was awarded on Feb 21, 2025, at an estimated cost of Rs 32.4 crore. However, resistance began when soil testing was attempted at the site, with locals preventing the agency from conducting preliminary investigations. In a letter dated July 16, the deputy chief engineer (construction), Hubballi division of railways, informed the Belagavi DC that the dept intends to proceed with the approved straight alignment. The letter states that alternative T-type alignments would violate Indian Roads Congress (IRC) design codes. The required land acquisition of 220.20 square metres was sanctioned on Feb 6. The railways requested the DC's intervention, noting that delays could affect the scheduled commissioning of the project by Dec 2026.

Farmer groups to step up campaign against FTA with U.S.
A general body meeting of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) held in New Delhi on Sunday (July 20, 2025) has warned the Union government against going ahead with the proposed trade agreement with the United States. The SKM said, in a statement on Monday (July 21, 2025), that the general body has also called for nationwide protests against the deal as it could act against the interests of farmers. The SKM will observe August 13 as 'Corporations Quit India Day' and said it seriously apprehends that the Narendra Modi government is surrendering to the diktats of the 'U.S. Imperialism' to sign the free trade agreement (FTA). The SKM said such an agreement could lead to opening up of agriculture, dairy and food markets and that will hurt the interests of the people. 'The FTA is supposed to come into effect by August 1, 2025. August 9 is the 83rd anniversary of the Quit India Day movement against British colonialism. To protest the BJP-led NDA government's moves to accept USA's pressures and increase imports of food and dairy items, including Genetically Modified foods and penetration of multinational corporations in food markets, SKM will issue a mass warning through these mass protests,' the statement said. 'Peasants will raise the slogan 'Corporations Quit India' on August 13 by organising tractor/ motor vehicle parades and protest demonstrations and burn effigies of the US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi,' the statement added. The meeting congratulated the leadership of the united trade union movement for the strike action on July 9. 'This was the 22nd general strike since the invention of neo-liberal policies and its success has filled confidence to all the democratic sections in the society that the entire working people are ready to fight back the anti-people policies of the ruling classes,' the statement said.
