Geely marks 200,000th unit of Xingyuan EV

The Sun19-05-2025
GEELY has achieved a major production milestone with the 200,000th unit of its budget-friendly electric vehicle, the Geome Xingyuan, rolling off the assembly line. This compact city EV has established itself as a serious contender in China's entry-level electric vehicle market, where it directly rivals BYD's high-volume Seagull.
With a starting price of 68,800 yuan (approximately RM45,000), the Xingyuan offers customers a competitive range of features for its segment. Two powertrain options are available: a 58 kW variant capable of a 310km range under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), and a more powerful 85 kW version that extends the range to 410km. These choices provide buyers with greater flexibility compared to many other vehicles in the same class.
The Xingyuan features Geely's distinctive rounded front design and a hatchback rear profile. Measuring 4,135 mm in length, 1,805 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,650 mm, it offers a relatively spacious interior, especially in the rear, giving it a practical edge over similarly sized competitors such as the Seagull or the BYD Dolphin here. The model is available in a range of colour options, including standout shades like pink and blue, and includes semi-concealed door handles for a cleaner exterior look.
Inside, the Xingyuan is equipped with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster as standard, while a 14.6-inch central touchscreen powered by Flyme Auto OS is available as an upgrade. Additional technology includes a 540-degree surround camera system, heated seats, wireless phone charging, and an external pedestrian alert sound system. The car also supports multiple drive modes tailored for various driving environments, including outdoor conditions.
Both versions utilise lithium iron phosphate batteries supplied by CATL, with fast-charging capabilities that allow the battery to be replenished from 30 to 80 percent in approximately 21 minutes. Performance-wise, the 85 kW model can accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, positioning it among the quicker options in the entry-level segment while maintaining a longer driving range than many competitors.
The milestone of 200,000 units produced demonstrates the Xingyuan's rising prominence in the domestic EV sector. Its blend of affordability, practical range, and advanced features has made it an attractive proposition for buyers looking beyond the usual low-cost electric offerings.
In Malaysia, the model was recently introduced by Proton as the e.MAS 5, joining the e.MAS line-up as the more compact sibling to the forthcoming e.MAS 7. With its competitive specifications and proven market performance in China, the e.MAS 5 is expected to contribute significantly to Proton's growing ambitions in the electric vehicle space.

STAR reviews AI investment for efficient government services

PUTRAJAYA: The Special Task Force on Agency Reform (STAR) is reviewing AI investments to ensure they improve government efficiency and service delivery. STAR stated that an analysis of the 'AI Productivity Paradox' showed AI saves time but has not yet boosted national productivity. The 7th STAR meeting for 2025, chaired by Chief Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, assessed progress on reform projects and administrative efficiency. Key discussions included government quarters management, border security, immigration system disruptions, and public administration tech challenges. The meeting highlighted the need to strengthen public service integrity, particularly at entry points, to support transparent governance. STAR will further study service delivery effectiveness and refine operational procedures to meet global standards. Three ministries received Bureaucratic Reform (RKB) awards for efficiency improvements. The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development digitised social work courses, saving RM150,000 annually in compliance costs. The Ministry of Education cut Matriculation College admission appeals from 12 to five working days, saving RM7.5 million yearly. The Ministry of Plantations and Commodities streamlined rubber board licensing, reducing compliance costs by 68% and saving RM11.4 million annually. STAR collaborates with the Performance Surge Coordination Unit, MADANI Monitoring Unit, and Malaysian Productivity Corporation to enhance policy implementation. The task force remains committed to resolving cross-ministerial and inter-agency challenges. - Bernama

Over 475mil e-invoices issued as rollout expands, says Deputy Finance Minister

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 475mil e-invoices have been issued as of August 18 this year, the Dewan Rakyat was told. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said over 98,000 taxpayers have issued e-invoices. 'These include not only those mandated under Phases 1 to 3, but also voluntary contributors under Phases 4 and 5,' she said during question time on Tuesday (August 19). She said about 37,000 taxpayers have voluntarily contributed under Phases 4 and 5. However, Lim said the additional revenue for the government can only be determined once the system is fully implemented next year. "Our main objective is to improve business efficiency. Once Phase 5 is rolled out, we will have a clearer picture," she said. Lim said small businesses can also consolidate their e-invoices monthly. She was responding to Azli Yusof (PH–Shah Alam), who asked about the e-invoicing rollout and its impact on government revenue. Lim added that numerous engagements have been held with stakeholders. "That is why the rollout is in phases. Engagement is ongoing," she said. The e-invoicing initiative began in August 2024 for companies with annual turnover above RM100mil. The second phase started on Jan 1 of this year for businesses with annual sales between RM25mil and RM100mil. The third phase of full implementation was initially set for July 1, covering all businesses. However, in June, the Inland Revenue Board announced that taxpayers with annual income or sales below RM500,000 are exempt. Implementation for those earning between RM1mil and RM5mil is postponed to January 1, 2026, while for those earning up to RM1mil it is postponed to July 1, 2026.

Industrial spillover: Johor to gain from Singapore's northern expansion

ACCORDING to Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB), there are plenty of news about JSSEZ in Johor as well as developments near to RTS Bukit Chagar in JB that it seems all the hype about JSSEZ is centred in Johor. But what about the other end of the causeway in Singapore? During the annual National Day Rally speech on Sunday (17 Aug), we get a glimpse of what Singapore is doing on its side as Singapore PM Lawrence Wong unveiled long-term development plans for the northern region of Singapore (Woodlands, Kranji and Sembawang) over the next 10-15 years. To support the JS-SEZ, the Woodlands checkpoint of the Johor–Singapore Causeway will be redeveloped in phases over the next decade, expanding to five times its current size. Redevelopment works are slated to begin in 2025, with the revamped checkpoint designed to cut average clearance time from one hour to just 15 minutes during peak periods. 'This transformation aims to deliver shorter waiting times, smoother traffic flow and more efficient yet secure clearance procedures,' said HLIB. On top of transport efficiency, the RTS station in Woodlands will connect directly to Woodlands North MRT station on the Thomson–East Coast Line, enabling seamless transfers between the RTS and Singapore's MRT network. Around the RTS Link station, Singapore will introduce new 'flexible' industrial spaces targeted at businesses seeking to tap into the SEZ. Complementing this are new public housing projects, including 4,000 flats near Admiralty Park and additional residential developments along the Woodlands waterfront. Beyond Woodlands, Singapore also has plans to rejuvenate adjacent areas such as Kranji and Sembawang. Together, the three districts will anchor a vibrant new northern waterfront destination, reshaping the economic and social profile of Singapore's northern gateway. These large-scale plans underscore that the JS-SEZ is not a one-sided initiative. Singapore is also investing heavily in its northern frontier to create a stronger, better-integrated cross-border ecosystem. For Johor, this carries several implications: Residential upside With faster checkpoint clearance and direct RTS–MRT integration, daily commuting for workers who work in Singapore and stay in Johor becomes more practical. This strengthens Johor's appeal as a lower-cost housing base and should, in turn, drive property value uplift around RTS Bukit Chagar and nearby areas. Listed developers with exposure near the RTS Bukit Chagar station include Sunway (RTS TOD project and Sunway Majestic), Mah Sing (M Grand Minori), UOA Development and Crescendo (Senyum Residence). Industrial spillover The development of 'flexible' industrial spaces near RTS Woodlands should enhance the feasibility and convenience of businesses to set up complementary industries in Johor, capitalising on its lower cost advantage, particularly logistics, warehousing, and manufacturing functions that require scale. Developers with significant Johor industrial exposure include IOIPG (1.1k acres land in Kulai), SP Setia (307 acres in Tanjung Kupang) and UEMS (1.1k acres under its revised masterplan pending approval). Uplift in retail and tourism demand As northern Singapore urbanises into a lifestyle and waterfront hub, Johor stands to benefit from spillover in retail, hospitality, and tourism demand, where Johor can provide more affordable and larger-format offerings. Key beneficiaries include Sunway (RTS TOD project with mall and hotel components, retail mall component in Sunway Majestic and the upcoming redevelopment of Sunway Big Box Mall), IGB Reit (Southkey Mall), Paradigm REIT (Paradigm Mall JB). In short, northern Singapore's redevelopment raises the overall profile of the JS-SEZ corridor. Given Singapore's inherent land and cost constraints, Johor is positioned as the natural 'overflow valve' absorbing demand for housing, larger-scale commercial space, and cost-sensitive industries, thereby reinforcing the integrated growth story of the JS-SEZ. 'We maintain our OVERWEIGHT rating on the property sector,' said HLIB. —Aug 19, 2025 Main image: Gloria Jeans Coffee
