California Love: Cowboys agree to 5-year deal for summer home costing $375k in rent

USA Today08-07-2025
Dallas cements California as its summer home through 2029.
The Dallas Cowboys are staying put in their summer home, at least through the end of the decade. The team has reached a five-year extension with the city of Oxnard, Calif., ensuring that their annual training camp will remain on the West coast through 2030.
The agreement is for a maximum of $375,000 and depends on how many weeks each season the team spends at the facility.
A move as such solidifies a long-running partnership that dates back to 2001, with the Cowboys having trained in Oxnard 17 times since then, including every year since 2010. What began as an occasional West Coast detour has turned into a deeply rooted tradition, drawing tens of thousands of fans each summer and giving the team a unique environment to prepare for the season.
The agreement ensures continuity not just for the team, but also for a fanbase that treats the late July to August experience to Oxnard as a pilgrimage. Each summer, Cowboys supporters flood River Ridge Fields to get an up-close look at stars like Micah Parsons, CeeDee Lamb, and Dak Prescott as they prepare for another season.
As the Cowboys aim to break through a nearly 30-year Super Bowl drought, they'll continue to do so with the Pacific breeze at their backs and thousands of fans lining the sidelines. The setting may be relaxed, but the expectations are anything but.
Training camp officially kicks off July 21, with open practices running through mid-August, and now, for the next five years to come.

Jerry Jones not confident Cowboys star Micah Parsons will play in Week 1 after trade request despite being listed as a starter

The Dallas Cowboys have released their first unofficial depth chart of the 2025 season, and defensive end Micah Parsons is listed as a starter despite his recent trade request and lagging contract negotiations. But despite that, owner Jerry Jones isn't sure that Parsons will actually be out on the field with the Cowboys for their season-opener against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1. "No, absolutely not," Jones said Tuesday afternoon when asked if he was confident about Parsons' status for that game, via The Athletic's Jon Machota. "A big part of that is his decision. How would I know that? I'm just saying. But I'm urgent.' [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Parsons has yet to fully participate in a training camp practice in the two weeks since the team reported to Oxnard, California. He released a lengthy statement on social media this past Friday, requesting a trade from the Cowboys, who drafted him No. 12 overall in the 2021 draft. Jones said that neither he nor his people have actually spoken to Parsons or his agent since the request was made on Friday. That said, Parsons continued to show up at Cowboys practice Saturday and Monday — the team was off on Sunday — notably wearing his No. 11 jersey Monday while watching his teammates and conversing with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus as well as vice president of player personnel Will McClay. While Parsons wrote, "I no longer want to be here," in a trade-request statement he captioned, "Thank you Dallas," on social media, the Cowboys aren't looking to trade their premier edge rusher. Though Jones was far from convincing, first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer is planning to have the four-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro available come Sept. 4. 'We're still planning on moving Micah around and putting him in all the spots that we see him and using our fronts the way we want to see it,' Schottenheimer said. 'We go about our business every day. We live in the moment. We focus in the moment. And again, like I said, I talked to you guys the other day, not going to get a lot into it. 'But I expect Micah to be here.' Parsons is in the fifth-year option of his rookie deal with the Cowboys. He won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2021, the first of his four seasons with 12-plus sacks since entering the league. The Penn State product has piled up 52.5 sacks, 256 total tackles, 112 quarterback hits and nine forced fumbles in 63 regular-season games.

The necessary change Giants must make in push to set early season tone

There are many reasons not to, and there is compelling evidence to break with extreme caution and just do it. The Giants absolutely, positively cannot start this season the way they opened up in 2023 and 2024. Cannot happen. This is not a decree that on Sept. 7 they must go into Landover, Md., and upset the Commanders. That is silly talk for Week 1. Yet it is imperative that the Giants do not leave the field at Northwest Stadium embarrassed and dominated. They cannot look listless and inept. They cannot fail to score a single touchdown. Advertisement The damage done by a 40-0 no-show loss to the Cowboys to open 2023 inflicted harm to the body, souls and minds of the Giants. That game was sheer folly. The sluggish, incompetent way the Giants welcomed in their 2024 season, barely showing up in a 28-6 defeat at the hands of the Vikings, set a dire tone that never could be shaken as the 100th year in franchise history turned into a Sad Centennial. Both of those games were at MetLife Stadium and in neither of those games did the home team cross the goal line and venture into the end zone. Eight quarters, zero touchdowns, six total points.

Wayne Matthews III says MSU is 'stacked' at LB, gives freshman LB a shout out

A freshman Spartans linebacker is turning heads in what is considered a "stacked" position group A freshman linebacker has gained the respect and grabbed the attention of a veteran within that position room. Veteran linebacker Wayne Matthews spoke with the media on Tuesday, fielding a number of questions about the Spartans as they prepare for the 2025 season. Matthews was quoted staying the Spartans are "stacked" at linebacker this year, with one particular young player getting a personal shout out as well: Brady Pretzlaff. Per a post on social media from Emmett Matasovsky of Spartan Shadows, Matthews said Pretzlaff is "going to be a guy" for the Spartans. Whether or not that is this year or down the road is not clear, but certainly still some high praise from Matthews for the young redshirt freshman linebacker. Here's the full post from Matasovsky with the quote from Matthews: Pretzlaff played in four games last year but was able to preserve his redshirt status. He tallied a seven total tackles, with one of which being for a loss. He was a four-star prospect in On3's ratings for the 2024 class, and a nice recruiting win for Jonathan Smith's staff in his first recruiting cycle. Pretzlaff came to Michigan State with expectations of seeing solid playing time early in his career and it sounds like that is going to happen. Having another young solid linebacker in an already talented -- "stacked" as Matthews said -- room is great news for the Spartans.
