on Tuesday said that the incident not only showed a new direction to our
freedom movement
but also gave a solid meaning to the goal of independence and the dream of an independent India.
Addressing the centenary celebration at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, PM
Modi
said, "This premises is becoming a witness to remembering an unprecedented incident in the history of our country; a historic incident which not only showed a new direction to our freedom movement but also gave a solid meaning to the goal of independence and the dream of an independent India. 100 years ago, the meeting between Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi is inspiring and relevant even today."
The Prime Minister said that even after a century, that meeting continues to serve as a source of energy for
social harmony
and for our collective goals towards a developed India.
"The ideals of
Shri Narayan Guru
are a great treasure for all of humanity. Those who work with the resolve to serve the nation and society, Shri Narayan Guru is like a guiding light for them," he said.
"India's speciality is that whenever our country gets entangled in the whirlpool of difficulties, some great personality is born in some corner of the country to show a new direction to society," the PM said, while adding that some of them work for the spiritual upliftment of society, while others accelerate social reforms in the social sphere.

PM Narendra Modi and other dignitaries performed 'guru smarna' at the centenary celebration of the historic conversation between Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi.
Organised by Sree Narayana Dharma Sanghom Trust, the celebration will bring together spiritual leaders and other members to reflect upon and commemorate the visionary dialogue that continues to shape India's social and moral fabric. It stands as a powerful tribute to the shared vision of social justice, unity, and spiritual harmony championed by both Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi.
The historic conversation took place at Sivagiri Mutt on 12 March 1925 during Mahatma Gandhi's visit and centred around Vaikom Satyagraha, religious conversions, non-violence, abolition of untouchability, attainment of salvation, and the uplift of the downtrodden, among others.

Statues of Chennai: an enduring symbol of labour union movement
Of the several statues that dot the stretch along the Marina beach, the Labour statue remains the most famous. The statue, officially called 'Triumph of Labour', was installed along with the Mahatma Gandhi statue as part of the beautification project of the Marina beach. State's economy in pink of health, says minister Hebbalkar
1 2 Udupi: Karnataka emerged as the highest per capita income (PCI) state in the country as the state govt demonstrated its efficiency in financial management to promote economic growth, said Laxmi Hebbalkar, minister of women and child development and in charge of Udupi district. During the 79th Independence Day celebration held at Mahatma Gandhi District Stadium in Ajjarkad on Friday, the minister said Karnataka ranks second in the country in GST collection, which is a clear example of the state's healthy economic system. Mahatma Gandhi, who led the freedom struggle, visited Udupi and called for the fight for freedom in Ajjarkad. It is an unforgettable event, and the memorial of this event remains permanent in this land, the minister recalled. The minister said approximately 82.57 lakh beneficiaries in the state are receiving direct deposits (DBT) through an Aadhaar-based transfer system every month. For farmers affected by natural calamities, the compensation software was upgraded to provide swift, transparent, and accurate relief directly to their bank accounts without any intermediaries, she added. Stating that the implementation of five guarantee schemes announced during the elections is ongoing, Hebbalkar said that the govt's performance received praise from experts both domestically and internationally. The proposal to upgrade Udupi City Municipality to a city corporation is under review by the govt, she said. Special attention is being given to developing tourism as a major sector in the district. Advocate Milind Pawar, representing Gandhi in a defamation case filed by Satyaki Savarkar, grand-nephew of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, said the Special MP/MLA Court had accepted the withdrawal. Rahul Gandhi is out on bail in the defamation case, in which trial proceedings are yet to begin. Satyaki Savarkar alleges the Congress leader defamed his great-uncle in a March 2023 speech in London, accusing V D Savarkar of writing that he and friends had once beaten a Muslim man and felt happy about it, a claim the complainant says is entirely false and unsupported by any writing.
