R Ashwin adds value to CSK, but not at his price tag: S Badrinath makes big claim

India Today8 hours ago
Former CSK player S Badrinath feels that R Ashwin does bring value to the franchise, but not at his current base price. Ashwin was bought by CSK for 9.75 crore rupees during the IPL 2025 mega auction as the spinner returned to his home franchise after a gap of eight years. However, the 2025 season ended on a sour note for Ashwin as he played just nine matches. advertisementDuring that time, the former India spinner took just seven wickets at an average of 40.43 and an economy rate of 9.13. A recent report suggested that Ashwin had discussions with CSK about his future and is open to leaving the franchise. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Badrinath said that the spinner isn't at his peak at the moment and hence he wants him to be released from the side. "I feel Ashwin adds value to CSK, but not at Rs 10 crore (Rs 9.75 crore). In the IPL, you need to see the price point and the player. He is definitely not at his peak. That is why I have been maintaining from the start that Ashwin has to be released," said Badrinath.
Ashwin recently revealed that his talks with CSK were about clarity regarding his future with the franchise ahead of the 2026 season. 'Samson at CSK could create confusion'Badrinath commented on the rumours of Sanju Samson leaving RR and potentially coming to CSK. The former batter said that the presence of Samson might create confusion in the franchise, especially with uncertainty around MS Dhoni's future. "We don't know if MS Dhoni is going to continue playing or not. That decision has not yet been made. He might play a few matches, or he could play a few matches at Chepauk. There might be a brand value attached. He could attract a few brands. He might announce till the IPL season starts. The presence of Sanju Samson could create confusion, which is what I feel," said Badrinath. The IPL trade window is currently active and runs until a week before the next auction.- Ends

Australia ODIs in sight, Rohit Sharma starts training with ex-coach Nayar

India ODI captain Rohit Sharma on Tuesday started training at a suburban Mumbai facility with former national assistant coach Abhishek Nayar amid clamour for a "youth only" policy in the 50-over format following the success of the inexperienced Test squad in England. Rohit had taken a break from the game for a couple of months post the IPL as Indian men's team embarked on a difficult tour of England. He also announced his retirement from Test cricket ahead of the five Test series in England and is now a one format player. He was on a family holiday in England and came back last week. Rohit posted an Instagram story from a gymnasium with his close friend Nayar, who also at times doubles up as his personal coach. Rohit Sharma and Abhishek Nayar are working on fitness for the 2027 World Cup. We are so back ????❤️????❤️????❤️. — ???????????? ???????????????????????? (@jod_insane) August 12, 2025 Nayar, who has also worked the likes of Dinesh Karthik, KL Rahul, Rinku Singh and young KKR batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi, was India's assistant coach batting till Champions Trophy, following which he was sacked. However, all those who have personally worked with Nayar have spoken about the changes he has brought in their games, including Rahul, who worked with him prior to the start of the England Test series where he scored 532 runs. The picture is an indication that Rohit is not in a mood to throw in the towel yet and would like to still believe that he would be good enough to play in the 50 over World Cup in 2027, still 26 months from now. The current national selection committee would want to ensure that a stable core is created for the 50 over set-up and with players who are available for the next two years. A school of thought in the Indian team management is that Rohit should be offered a farewell series and that should be Australia with Shubman Gill being announced as the new 50-over skipper. But how the selection committee and more so BCCI's influential office-bearers look at events is equally important. Rohit is an ODI legend with 32 hundreds, third highest in the all time list after Virat Kohli (51) and Sachin Tendulkar (49). For the record, Rohit was the 'Player of The Match' against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final. Salman Khan could've owned an IPL Team, here's why he said no: 'Pachta rahe...'

Many Bollywood stars have significant investments in the IPL (Indian Premier League). Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla are the owners of three-time champions KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders), while Preity Zinta is one of the co-owners of IPL 2025 finalist PBKS (Punjab Kings). Bollywood's superhero Salman Khan is also very interested in cricket and often tweets about the IPL. An old tweet of his for Preity Zinta's team went viral after Punjab reached the final of IPL 2025. However, Khan is not the owner of any IPL team. On Sunday, he made an interesting revelation that he was offered a team back in 2008, when the IPL first began. Why doesn't Salman Khan own an IPL team? During an event in Mumbai, when asked if he was interested in buying an IPL team in the future, the 59-year-old star replied in his signature style, 'I have become too old for the IPL.' Salman further said, 'IPL was offered to me a long time ago, but I didn't take it at that time. Now it's not like I regret it. I'm happy very happy. I took part in the ISPL league: tennis ball, street cricket, the kind I can play. Big leagues are not within our reach; we are grassroots players, and we're good here.' Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has bought the New Delhi franchise, stepping into the Indian Street Premier League (ISPL). This team will join the league from Season 3 (2025). The ISPL already features several celebrity team owners, including Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Akshay Kumar, Suriya, Hrithik Roshan, and Ram Charan, each representing teams from different cities. Salman's entry is expected to raise both the competition and the excitement. The New Delhi team will aim to make its mark in true Dabangg style, while fans will enjoy the fresh experience of seeing their favorite star as the owner of a cricket team. In Season 2 of the Indian Street Premier League, Majhi Mumbai won the title. This time, in the third season, the mascot of ISPL is Googly Bhai. The league's core committee includes Tendulkar, Asian Cricket Council member and cabinet minister Ashish Shelar, Meenal Amol Kale, and Suraj Samat. Their mission is to connect grassroots talent with professional cricket opportunities. After buying the team, Salman Khan said, 'Cricket resonates like a heartbeat in every street, and when that energy reaches the stadium, a league like ISPL is born. I have always been passionate about this game and am very excited to be associated with ISPL. This unique league not only promotes grassroots cricket in India but also provides an important platform for talented players.'
