Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is set to convert the now-defunct Barrister Sheshrao Wankhede Vidya Niketan, popularly known as Mor Hindi School in Ramdaspeth, into a dedicated multi-sport facility including skating, badminton and basketball courts with a proposed budget of Rs40–Rs50 lakh.
Taking cognisance of long-pending demands from locals, NMC commissioner and administrator Dr Abhijeet Chaudhari on Friday visited the site and directed officials to immediately clear the premises and prepare a detailed plan for the sports development.
As the school remained closed for several years, residents urged the civic body to make productive use of the available open ground and infrastructure by introducing recreational and sport facilities.
Currently, the premises house the advanced Young Kalam Science Centre operated by HCL Foundation. Another section of the building is used by the Dharampeth zone office to store old education department material, Covid-era supplies, and equipment seized during anti-encroachment drives.
Assistant commissioner Snehalata Kumbhar informed that a contractor was already appointed to dispose of these old items and will clear the premises in the coming week.

Following a complete inspection of the school grounds, Chaudhari asked sports officer Piyush Ambulkar to prepare a proposal to introduce sports amenities on the site. After visiting the place, Ambulkar told TOI the plan includes developing a skating rink, badminton and pickleball courts, and a basketball facility.
"One of the indoor halls is being activated for regular badminton games, while a skating rink and basketball court will be developed outside," said Ambulkar.
The commissioner also directed officials to ensure the construction of clean and accessible toilet facilities for players and visitors.
Once complete, the Rs40–Rs50 lakh project is expected to offer much-needed sports infrastructure to residents of Ramdaspeth and Dharampeth, converting an idle civic asset into a vibrant recreational hub. Dr Chaudhari inspected the school campus along with NMC medical health officer Dr Deepak Selokar, Dharampeth zone assistant commissioner Snehalata Kumbhar, sports officer Piyush Ambulkar, executive engineers Manoj Singh, Naresh Gadre, deputy education officer Sanjay Dighore and representatives of HCL Foundation including Piyush Wankhede and Ajinkya Kulkarni.
