Spain's Balearic Islands to cut ties with influencers in bid to stop ‘selfie tourism'
The Balearic government backtracked on the use of influencer marketing campaigns after a cove in Mallorca was swarmed by 4,000 visitors a day last summer.
Caló des Moro only has the space to welcome around 100 beachgoers each day.
Influencer content showcasing the small cove prompted tourists to travel for pictures of the golden sands and clear waters.
The local mayor of Mallorca's Santanyí, Maria Pons, said at a press conference last June that 4,000 people and 1,200 vehicles were descending on Caló des Moro daily.
In June 2024, hundreds of activists descended on the once secluded cove to demand sunbathers leave the beach with a giant banner that declared: 'Ocupem les nostres platges' – 'We will occupy our beaches'.
Previously, the Balearics had hoped that the use of influencer content would redirect tourist flow to more remote parts of the popular holiday islands and highlight hidden gems.
However, following a push on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, the tourism marketing strategy has seen remote and protected parts of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza overrun with holidaymakers looking to snap a selfie.
Last weekend, a spokesman for the Balearic tourism department said selfie tourism had 'had the completely opposite effect to what was intended and runs contrary to government policy on containing tourism', reported the Guardian.
The local authority has since removed all images of the cove from its website and pleaded with journalists and tour operators to stop promoting the location altogether.
Similarly, in March, residents in Ibiza vowed to continue anti-tourism protests this summer, barricading a famous viewpoint with boulders and 'no entry' warnings.
Angry locals in Cala d'Hort de Sant Josep blocked tourist access to the Es Vedra lookout and its car parks in a bid to curb overtourism and 'wild parties' in the area.
Hundreds of unregulated holidaymakers flock to the islet viewpoint on Ibiza's southwest coast each day in summer, using unofficial car parks on private land to watch the sunset.

But not settling there, Joe opened the door for the possibility of more animals joining their growing family, which already includes dogs, ducks and fish. 'We had more chickens arrive the other day and I've heard rumours there might be rabbits on the way. 'There's always something new. I wouldn't be surprised if a goat popped up, or a pig. I feel like we're at that stage now.' The first bits of honey were extracted from their beehive recently, and so far, none of the family has been stung – although their dog Peanut did get nipped. 'I think he might have got a bit too close the other day, but he won't be doing that again,' Joe said. Joe and Stacey's interest in becoming more sustainable has spilled over into growing more fruit and vegetables and is something the whole family take part in. 1980s TV star Timmy Mallett spotted in Wicklow
Renowned for his energetic personality, colourful attire and striking spectacles, Timmy was a star of the TV screens in the 1980s and 90s, hosting television shows such as Wide Awake Club and Wacaday. In 1990 he had a number one hit single with his cover version of single Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, and more recently he appeared on I'm a Me Out of Here! In 2008. Having circumnavigated the UK on his 'Timmeee' bike, and stopping along the way to paint some of the stunning landscapes he came across, followed by a tour of the coastal boarders of Northern Ireland, Timmy decided to do a solo tour along the Wild Atlantic Way - exploring rural Ireland by bike and documenting the experience in paint and prose. He was a welcome visitor to the Wicklow RNLI Lifeboat Station on Thursday, where he was greeted by some of the volunteer crew and members of the fundraising branch. Wicklow RNLI PRO Tommy Dover said: 'It was great for everyone present to be able to welcome Timmy to Wicklow to the lifeboat station. He initially contacted the fundraising branch to ask if it would be OK for him to visit, and we were all delighted with the idea. He just wanted to see how the station operates and give us a nod for all the work we do. He is very much community-spirt driven. 'Some of our more 'seasoned' crew would have been very familiar with him, while some of our newer crew might not have been quite so familiar. He was very friendly and chatted away to members of the crew and the fundraising branch. You have to admire his enthusiasm, and the fact he is taking on the entire Irish coastline, aged in his late 60s.' Prior to arriving in Wicklow town, Timmy took in some of the sights in Arklow, and heard all about the history of the iconic 19 Arches Bridge over the River Avoca, constructed between 1754 and 1756. After leaving Wicklow RNLI Lifeboat Station, he cycled to Hunter's Hotel in Rathnew, where he stopped for lunch. He also went on to post an image on Instagram of the sign announcing entry to Newcastle village, before making his way on to Dublin.
