Vice-premier to meet US delegation for trade talks

The Star3 hours ago

Vice-Premier He Lifeng will meet a US delegation for talks in Britain, Beijing announced amid a fragile truce in the trade dispute between the two powers.
He will visit the United Kingdom from June 8 to 13 at the invitation of the British government, China's Foreign Ministry said Saturday in a statement.
It said He and American representatives will co-chair the first meeting of the China-US economic and trade consultation mechanism.
US President Donald Trump had already announced on Friday that a new round of trade talks with China would kick off in London beginning today, after he spoke by phone with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in a bid to end a bitter battle over tariffs.
Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer would meet the Chinese team.
The discussions will mark the second round of such negotiations between the world's two biggest economies since Trump launched his trade war shortly after returning to the White House in January.
A first meeting, held in mid-May in Geneva, brought a pause to the US-China trade dispute.
But Trump then accused Beijing of not respecting the terms of the recent de-escalation agreement.
On Thursday the Republican president finally discussed the issues with Xi for the first time since the trade tensions soared, assuring that the conversation had been positive.
Xi for his part told Trump the two should 'correct the course' of bilateral relations, according to remarks quoted by official Chinese media. — AFP

Ringgit Falls Against US Dollar On Economic Concerns

The ringgit opened lower against the US dollar on Monday as the American currency strengthened amid renewed uncertainty caused by challenging global economic forecasts for the second half of 2025. At 8:03 am, the local currency was quoted at 4.2375/2560 against the US dollar, compared to 4.2270/2360 on Friday. During early trading, the ringgit was mostly weaker against a basket of major currencies. It edged up against the Japanese yen to 2.9305/9435 from 2.9324/9390 on Friday but declined against the pound to 5.7367/7618 from 5.7212/7334 and slipped versus the euro to 4.8341/8552 from 4.8268/8371. The local currency also saw mixed performance against ASEAN currencies. It strengthened against the Thai baht to 12.9468/13.0121 from 12.9599/9947 on Friday, but weakened against the Singapore dollar to 3.2892/3041 from 3.2862/2934, dropped against the Philippine peso to 7.60/7.64 from 7.58/7.60 and declined versus the Indonesian rupiah to 260.1/261.4 from 259.5/260.2. Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid, Chief Economist at Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd, said the ringgit is expected to trade between RM4.23 and RM4.24 today, following stronger-than-expected US non-farm payroll (NFP) data for May. He said the US NFP increased by 139,000 in May, exceeding the consensus estimate of 126,000, while the unemployment rate remained steady at 4.2% for the third consecutive month. This led to the US Dollar Index (DXY) rising to 99.190 points on Friday. 'Latest NFP data shows that the US labour market remains resilient despite facing high tariffs,' he told local media. However, he noted that April's NFP figures were revised downwards from 177,000 to 147,000, while the US labour force participation rate fell to 62.4% in May from 62.6% in April. 'Therefore, although the labour market is still healthy, indicators of slower growth in the data set are becoming more apparent. 'Based on weak business and consumer sentiment, economic outlook for the second half of 2025 appears increasingly challenging. In our view, the likelihood of a cut in the US Federal Funds Rate has risen,' he added. Last week, the ringgit strengthened against the US dollar, with USDMYR closing at RM4.2315, marking a weekly gain of 0.6%. Related

Ramasamy wants Penang EXCO reprimanded for unilateral decision on Indian Muslim housing discount

I CANNOT stop wondering at how the Penang state government could permit an EXCO member to make unilateral announcements without the approval or endorsement of the state executive council (EXCO). I am bewildered that Penang state Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo could announce a 5% housing discount for Indian Muslims under the Madani housing scheme without apparent consultation with his other EXCO colleagues. Sundarajoo justified the move on grounds of low participation among Indian Muslims in state housing. But can he furnish data to back this claim? What are the comparative participation rates of Malays, Chinese, Indians and Indian Muslims? He also stated that this discount would not affect allocations for the Malays – yet he seems to overlook the complex identity overlap where some Indian Muslims are classified as Malay/Bumiputera while others maintain their distinct ethnic identity. Has there been any study quantifying the percentage of Indian Muslims who qualify under the Bumiputera category versus those who identify separately? Jumping the gun? Without such data, it's hard to justify a policy decision that could result in dual benefits for a segment of the population, raising questions of fairness and equity. Had this proposal been tabled in an EXCO meeting, its flaws could have been debated and possibly avoided. But instead, Sundarajoo proceeded based on consultations with developers – not the state government – casting doubt on the integrity of Penang's housing policy framework. This was a poor decision made without transparency and without consideration for other equally deserving communities. The policy lacked sound rationale and undermined public confidence. In this regard, I commend Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow for stepping in to reverse the decision and broadening the discount to all eligible Malaysians. I urge Chow to go a step further – reprimand Perai state assemblyman Sundarajoo for bypassing proper procedure and acting irresponsibly on a matter of public policy. – June 9, 2025 Former DAP stalwart and Penang chief minister II Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy is chairman of the United Rights of Malaysian Party (Urimai) interim council. Israeli forces seize Gaza aid boat carrying Greta Thunberg

JERUSALEM: Israeli forces have taken command of a charity vessel that had tried to break a naval blockade of the Gaza Strip and the boat with its crew of 12 including activist Greta Thunberg is now heading to a port in Israel, officials said on Sunday. The British-flagged yacht Madleen, which is operated by the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), was aiming to deliver a symbolic amount of aid to Gaza later on Monday and raise international awareness of the humanitarian crisis there. However, the boat was boarded during the night before it could reach shore, the FFC said on its Telegram account. The Israeli Foreign Ministry later confirmed that it was under Israeli control. "The 'selfie yacht' of the 'celebrities' is safely making its way to the shores of Israel. The passengers are expected to return to their home countries," the ministry wrote on X. All passengers were safe and unharmed, the ministry later added. "They were provided with sandwiches and water. The show is over." Among the 12-strong crew are Swedish climate campaigner Thunberg and Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament. "The crew of the Freedom Flotilla was arrested by the Israeli army in international waters around 2am," Hassan posted on X. A photograph showed the crew seated on the boat, all wearing life jackets, with their hands in the air. The yacht is carrying a small shipment of humanitarian aid, including rice and baby formula. The Foreign Ministry said it would be taken to Gaza. "The tiny amount of aid that was on the yacht and not consumed by the 'celebrities' will be transferred to Gaza through real humanitarian channels," it wrote. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz ordered the military on Sunday to prevent the Madleen from reaching Gaza, calling the mission a propaganda effort in support of Hamas. Israel imposed a naval blockade on the coastal enclave after Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007. The blockade has remained in place through multiple conflicts, including the current war, which began after a Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on Oct 7, 2023, that killed more than 1,200 people, according to an Israeli tally. Gaza's health ministry says over 54,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of Israel's military campaign. The United Nations has warned that most of Gaza's more than 2 million residents are facing famine. The Israeli government says the blockade is essential to prevent weapons from reaching Hamas. The United Nations' special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has supported the FFC operation and on Sunday, urged other boats to challenge the Gaza blockade.
