FOUR-PLAY: $200 BETTING STRATEGY
RACE 4 (THE VALLEY): BENCHMARK 78 HANDICAP (1000m)
$50 win NEW YORK LUSTRE (3) at $3.10
New York Lustre has had a freshen up after winning all three runs last campaign, progressing through the grades from a Benchmark 58 to a Benchmark 90. She resumes here in a Benchmark 78 over 1000m, where she is two from two. There is a lot of speed in the race and she is perfectly drawn in barrier four to sit outside the leader or just off the pace.
RACE 5 (THE VALLEY): BENCHMARK 100 HANDICAP (1519m)
$50 win SUPARAZI (5) at $4
Superazi finished behind Nicolini Vito and Chorlton Lane in the Victoria Handicap where he jumped favourite. He can improve here third-up on a likely soft track, and is probably better suited stepping up in distance then his main rivals, although the wide barrier is some concern.
RACE 7 (MORPHETTVILLE): GROUP 1 AUSTRALASIAN OAKS (2000m)
$50 win BENAGIL (2) at $3.80
The Victorian filly stays at the 2000m after chasing Treasurethe Moment into second in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes at Randwick last start and finishing well ahead of Movin Out who is the third favourite here. A softer draw would have been preferable but have trust jockey Mark Zahra can have her in the right spot.
RACE 8 (ASCOT): THE QUOKKA (1200m)
$50 win OVERPASS (1) at $2.05
The Bjorn Baker sprinter has been a class above his rivals when he travels to Perth, unbeaten in four runs at Ascot. That could be the case again in his bid for a Quokka hat-trick after his terrific return in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes where he finished a close second to Briasa, and this year's field is arguably not as strong as past editions.

QUADZILLA
LEG 1 – RACE 6
Tough start to the quaddie. CATAHOULA (11) couldn't get past PRIMAL SPIRIT (4) at Sandown Lakeside but will likely have more improvement being second-up. Both runners will give a good sight up front. BARBARIC LAD (7) was running on from back in the field after drawing wide gates in his past two runs in BM74 grade, and can settle closer from barrier one. Singaporean import RAVALLI (5) has trialled well for his first Australian start. DIRTY GRIN (6) started the prep with back-to-back BM64 wins before running into smart galloper King Zephyr at Sandown Hillside.
1ST LEG: 4, 5, 6, 7, 11
LEG 2 – RACE 7
LET'SFACETHEMUSIC (1) bounced back with a second behind Manolo Bling at Bendigo after he was well beaten in the Darby Munro in Sydney. Prior to that he won a Kilmore maiden and was runner-up in a handicap race down the Flemington straight. STAGE 'N' SCREEN (7) has had little go her way this prep. She was held up for a run first-up at The Valley and then pulled up lame last start. EL TERCERO (4) has won his past two but is deep into his first preparation. He was slow out at Pakenham last time out but was still too good.
2ND LEG: 1, 4, 7
LEG 2 – RACE 8
Six runners come out of the Bert Bryant Handicap at Caulfield with PREFERENTIAL (14), FORTUNE (3) and KHOR (4) all finishing inside a length behind My Brothers Keeper. Fortune snuck a run on the inside and hit the front at the 150m before he was swamped late by My Brothers Keeper and Preferential out wide. He has drawn better than Preferential, who may not get a run as first emergency. Chris Waller import SUN GOD (5) looks ready now third-up.
3RD LEG: 3, 4, 5, 14
LEG 4 – RACE 9
Another leg to go wide. AMBASSADORIAL (9) drops back to a BM78 after resuming with a solid third in a BM84 at The Valley. WAIMARIE (8) is also second-up and both her wins over 1600m have been on wet tracks, which includes one at the track. TYPHOON HARMONY (7) is racing well with three straight placings. SPACE AGE (3) was a big improver last start at Randwick-Kensington and was held up for a run. LE ZEBRA (1) is back in trip and grade.
4TH LEG: 1, 3, 7, 8, 9
Cost $100 for 33.33%
SKINNY QUADDIE
1ST LEG: 4, 7, 11
2ND LEG: 1, 4
3RD LEG: 3, 14
4TH LEG: 7, 8, 9
Cost $100 for 277.77.18%

Jett Stanley out to make late grandad proud with Stradbroke Handicap victory

Jett Stanley reckons his late grandfather Jimmy will be smiling up in heaven if the Victorian jockey can win the Stradbroke Handicap. Stanley, 21, will fly up to Brisbane on Monday night in the hope that The Instructor can make the field for the $3m Stradbroke (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott -trained gelding is currently No.29 in the ballot but has a slim chance of making the field given the attrition rate, with star horses such as Joliestar and Giga Kick to skip Queensland's most prestigious race. Stanley has only ridden in one Group 1 race, last year's The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick in October when he finished 14th on Immediacy, more than 10 lengths behind the winner Land Legend. 'It's what every jockey dreams about,' he said on Monday about potentially winning his first major. 'I've always wanted to win a Group 1, ever since I was a five-year-old kid and to be able to do it in the Stradbroke would be an unreal feeling. 'My late grandfather Jimmy always wanted me to win a Group 1 but he felt it had to be the Stradbroke. 'I don't know why, he never really told us, but to possibly have the opportunity is a great thrill in itself, especially for great trainers like Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. 'Jimmy was a jockey around the Gundagai area and won metro races in Sydney. 'He'd be up there in heaven cheering me on and everyone in my family will be watching, we're a massive racing family.' Stanley's father Brent saluted in the 1996 Caulfield Cup as a teen jockey on Arctic Scent and won the race as a trainer, while Jett's mother Paris's dad Terry Millard was also a trainer. The young hoop, who started his career in Perth under trainers Grant and Alana Williams, remembers getting paid 50 cents for cleaning out a stable during school holidays at age eight. Stanley ended his apprenticeship in April when he rode The Instructor to victory in the Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200m) at Mornington. He was aboard the gelding for his third placing in the Wagga Town Plate early last month before Adam Hyeronimus steered the galloper to victory in his last start, the Listed Luskin Star Stakes at Scone on May 17. 'Quietly, I do give him a sneaky chance,' Stanley said if The Instructor happens to land a run in the Stradbroke. 'He tries his heart out for me, no matter what race he's in and I can't be happier with all the reports that I'm getting from Queensland.' Bott has his fingers crossed that his rising star The Instructor can sneak into the Stradbroke field, adamant the four-year-old is in 'career-best form'. 'He'll get a nice light weight (52kg) and he's in the right time of his career to take advantage of it,' Bott said. 'He's deep into the prep and he's holding up with career-best form. 'Coming up to a high-pressure handicap where he's got a light weight, I think that would suit really well. 'That trip (1400m) is probably right in his sweet spot where he can be most effective.'

'One tough horse': Rothfire 'back in the game' for Stradbroke Handicap

There could be another remarkable twist to the Rothfire story with Rob Heathcote declaring his wonder horse is 'back in the game' in a race against time to line up in Saturday's Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap. Hopes had been low that the 'Thriller from Chinchilla' would recover from a foot injury in time to take his place in Queensland's most prestigious race. However, after working the Group 1 winner on Monday morning, Heathcote feels the courageous seven-year-old sprinter is now a decent chance of lining up in Saturday's $3m Stradbroke. 'He will of course have to pass the scrutiny of vets, but from what we saw this morning, he will,' Heathcote said. 'Rothfire was excellent this morning. 'He's done a lot of swimming and he still has to come through his Tuesday morning gallop well, but from what we saw this morning, nothing is beyond this warrior horse. 'He is one tough horse.' The foot injury to Rothfire, which flared after he turned back the clock for an amazing runner-up finish behind Sunshine In Paris in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000, was only ever minor. But Heathcote said last week that although the foot infection had broken, he had felt Rothfire remained only a 'slim' chance of lining up in his third Stradbroke. However there is now a growing sense of optimism. It is still far from ideal that Rothfire would be racing in a Stradbroke after missing a run in the Kingsford Smith Cup, but Heathcote said it wasn't a major issue. 'The Doomben 10,000 run was worth a week of fitness work and the swimming he has been doing has kept him up to the mark,' he said. 'His courage will fill in the cracks.' Too good J-Mac! He lifts Sunshine In Paris to victory in the Doomben 10,000 ðŸ'° @mcacajamez @ANeashamRacing — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 17, 2025 Heathcote will not make a decision as to whether he accepts with Rothfire in the Stradbroke until after a Tuesday morning track work session. Rothfire's odds in the Stradbroke have blown out since he has been under an injury cloud and he is currently a $34 chance. Rothfire became a Group 1 champion in 2020 when he won the JJ Atkins in his two-year-old season. He has won close to $3.5m in prizemoney, despite suffering several major injury setbacks including a sesamoid fracture several years ago which had threatened to end his career.

Laurie plots spring plans for Group 1 stars Treasurethe Moment and Vinrock

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Group 1 stars Treasurethe Moment and Vinrock continue to impress astute trainer Matt Laurie, as spring campaigns sharpen into focus. The Mornington trainer has a traditional spring path being considered for triple Group 1-winner Treasurethe Moment, with Yulong boss and owner Yuesheng Zhang to decide on a Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate grand final. 'It's got to be confirmed and agreed by the boss … Memsie (Stakes), Makybe (Diva Stakes), Turnbull (Stakes) and they're deciding whether she goes to the Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate,' Laurie said. Treasurethe Moment has won nine of 11 starts in a stellar career to date, including the Group 1 VRC Oaks, Vinery Stud Stakes and Australian Oaks. 'If she doesn't win another one (Group 1) we got to be pretty happy with what she has done so far,' Laurie said. 'She has obviously got to take on the older horses now, it's a different league, so we'll see. 'Nine of 11 you'd think she's got something to offer.' Treasurethe Moment is $8 and $11 respectively in Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup markets. Yulong has a stranglehold on the Cox Plate with reigning champion Via Sistina ($2.50) and new acquisition Carl Spackler ($26), a multiple American Grade 1 winner being aimed at Australia's best race. Treasurethe Moment is ready to start trot and canter work under saddle after a week on the treadmill. 'She's come back looking better than she did last time,' Laurie said. 'She's buzzing like she's ready to have a canter, so she must be feeling well.' Group 1 Sires' Produce winner Vinrock has also returned in great shape. 'I've been doing some flat, dressage work in the arena,' Laurie said. 'He had his first trot and canter around our track at the farm (last Saturday) and he felt great.' Laurie has the Group 1 Golden Rose (1600m) earmarked as the first spring target for Vinrock but there are many other options following the September feature at Rosehill. 'I'm not sure. I felt he should be running in a Golden Rose and you're deciding whether you're going up to eight (1600m) or coming back to the six (1200m) furlongs,' Laurie said. Meanwhile, Laurie has Sun Setting chasing a hat-trick in a 1200m Benchmark 64 on King's Birthday Monday at Mornington. Laurie saved Sun Setting from a tougher assignment at Flemington last Saturday, saddled Soft Love in race instead and missed by the barest margin. Sun Setting finished second in two summer outings at Mornington before a short break. The promising daughter of Pierata returned with a Moe maiden win and repeated the effort last start on Mornington home turf. 'She's going really well and she looks well placed,' Laurie said. 'I don't know what price she is but she'd be short enough … I thought no point running them against each other (Soft Love and Sun Setting), as they were both good chances. 'I think she would've given the Flemington race a good shake … we thought a midweek meeting at Mornington, where she has run well before, was a smart move.' Sun Setting is a $3.40 favourite in the 1200m Benchmark 64 at Mornington. Originally published as Mornington trainer Matt Laurie plots spring plans for Group 1 stars Treasurethe Moment and Vinrock
