Brad Waters' horses to follow and forgive from The Valley

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Herald Sun racing writer Brad Waters runs his eye over Saturday's meeting at The Valley, finding five horses to follow and forgive from the card. FIVE TO FOLLOW: DEEKAY: Deekay had his first run for seven weeks at The Valley but he did a good job when chasing in-form galloper Elouyou. The five-year-old raced off the speed in the small field but chased well in tricky conditions to grab third in a pleasing return. Deekay will improve off that run and there's a win in him soon. ZEBELLA: Zebella returned to Victoria for her second-up run and gave a good sight racing on the speed. Jockey Joe Bowditch sent the grey to the lead, rolling along in front to the home turn. She was challenged on the home turn but fought on well to be only beaten a length. She looks ready to win third-up. GITALONG: Gitalong was on debut for the Hayes brothers at The Valley but showed his new owners that he would pay his way with his first-up outing. He worked across to race near the lead from the outside gate and tried hard in the straight but was no match for the flying New York Lustre. He'll only improve off that outing. VERDOUX: Verdoux threw away a first-up win at Geelong when he hung out sharply late and had to go back to the jumpouts between runs. However, his effort when stepping up in class at The Valley was solid. He raced on the speed and was only grabbed late but the talented Dirty Grin. He's ready to win. TROSETTEE: Trosettee has never won first-up in eight attempts but gave a good sight when resuming at The Valley. He tracked the leaders to the home turn and was entitled to tire on the deteriorating surface but kept trying in the last 200m to hold his ground. He's in for another good winter preparation. PLEASE FORGIVE: PORT ALBERT: Port Albert had good support second-up and raced in the box seat but couldn't quicken on a difficult surface under 61kg. He held his ground when getting off the fence in the straight and wasn't disgraced. He can atone soon. LET'SFACETHEMUSIC: Let'sfacethemusic did it tough, caught out three-wide without cover for most of the race and tried hard before fading in the last 100m. He's hard fit for recent racing and can improve with a softer run next time out. KHOR: Khor started favourite but luck deserted him early in the race, leaving him caught racing wide without cover. He challenged the leaders briefly at the 500m before weakening from home turn. He's worth another chance. STEWARDS SAY: NICOLINI VITO (Unplaced Race 5) – Failed to handle the track and vets examination revealed the gelding to have a throat condition. Many riders told stewards their mounts failed to handle the track conditions, which deteriorated during the day. New York Lustre earns shot at interstate stakes race after fifth straight win at The Valley

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Trainer Enver Jusufovic joked he didn't like Adelaide water but the City of Churches would be New York Lustre's next stop after posting her fifth straight win on Saturday. New York Lustre booked a shot at a stakes race after she overcame the difficult conditions to maintain her winning run at her first appearance since a Sandown success on February 1. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The rising six-year-old relished a class drop when winning the FRS FIRE Services Handicap (1000m) but is set to jump to Group 3 level in the Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) on May 10. 'She'll go to Adelaide I believe,' Jusufovic said. '(Owner) Mike Howard is a breeder and an investor in this industry so to get a bit of black type with her is very important for his cause and his business. 'We might venture over there. 'I don't really like the water over there, I prefer to stay here but if there's a bit of give in the track, it will be good.' Carleen Hefel took over from Jamie Melham, who had ridden New York Lustre in two Cranbourne jumpouts leading up to her racing return, but had little to worry about from the halfway point of the $130,000 race. New York Lustre comfortably held her opposition in the straight before notching her fifth win from eight starts by three-quarters of a length. 'She was a bit tardy out of the barriers and can be a bit restless in there but the way the race panned out, Carleen got her into a really good position,' Jusufovic said. 'I thought probably from the 600 onwards, she was probably the one to beat. 'Hopefully I get a good report from Carleen and there's no issue and she pulls up well.' The Manhattan Rain mare has not been beaten since finishing second in a maiden at Benalla in January last year. Jusufovic said New York Lustre had taken time to develop but added he was unsure where her ability would take the sprinter. New York Lustre is one of two mares in Jusufovic's stable to be on five-win streaks along with Proved, whom he sent for a spell after her win at Sandown on March 25. 'She's taken a long time,' Jusufovic said. 'She's been in the stable for a few preps and had no idea about the game plan. 'I don't know what the ceiling is with this mare at the moment. 'To string together five in a row, her and another horse have done it this prep, but I'm hoping for bigger and better things with her.' ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Elouyou's win an easy watch for nervous trainer Pre-race jitters gave way to an easy watch for young trainer Scott Cameron at The Valley. Cameron carried the hopes of favourite backers, who had supported his charge Elouyou to score again at The Valley in Saturday's Manhari Handicap (1200m). Elouyou won at $12 at his previous run at the track on March 22 but jumped as a well-backed $1.70 favourite as many punters expected the son of So You Think to lead the small field early. The race didn't pan out that way with early pressure on his inside causing jockey Fred Kersley to ease Elouyou to race behind the leaders, but the result was the same. Elouyou had the leaders covered on the home turn before strolling to an easy win, taking his impressive record to five wins and six minor placings from 12 starts. 'Coming into it, it was a bit nerve-racking having a $1.60 or $1.70 pop in but I had confidence in the horse and Fred,' the Flemington-based Cameron said. 'We came here thinking a few were going to try and put a bit of pressure on us but he's not a one trick pony. 'He had the right run and he was just a bit too good for them.' Kersley said Elouyou improved on his last win in his latest success. 'He gave me a better feel today,' Kersley said. 'It wasn't the be-all-and-end-all to lead but last start, we had the track pattern and bias in our favour. 'What I loved about today's effort was that I was able to go to Plan B and he raced tractably. 'It felt like I was on the winner from a long way out so it must have been a good watch.' Cameron said the weather would determine Elouyou's next assignment. 'He's just a really good wet tracker. He's good on top of the ground but he pulls up better after running on a soft track,' Cameron said. 'We've just got to keep an eye on the weather. 'There is a Benchmark 100 in two weeks at Caulfield but it all depends on what the weather is doing.' Four-Play, Quadzilla: $200 betting strategy for Saturday

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ FOUR-PLAY: $200 BETTING STRATEGY RACE 4 (THE VALLEY): BENCHMARK 78 HANDICAP (1000m) $50 win NEW YORK LUSTRE (3) at $3.10 New York Lustre has had a freshen up after winning all three runs last campaign, progressing through the grades from a Benchmark 58 to a Benchmark 90. She resumes here in a Benchmark 78 over 1000m, where she is two from two. There is a lot of speed in the race and she is perfectly drawn in barrier four to sit outside the leader or just off the pace. RACE 5 (THE VALLEY): BENCHMARK 100 HANDICAP (1519m) $50 win SUPARAZI (5) at $4 Superazi finished behind Nicolini Vito and Chorlton Lane in the Victoria Handicap where he jumped favourite. He can improve here third-up on a likely soft track, and is probably better suited stepping up in distance then his main rivals, although the wide barrier is some concern. RACE 7 (MORPHETTVILLE): GROUP 1 AUSTRALASIAN OAKS (2000m) $50 win BENAGIL (2) at $3.80 The Victorian filly stays at the 2000m after chasing Treasurethe Moment into second in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes at Randwick last start and finishing well ahead of Movin Out who is the third favourite here. A softer draw would have been preferable but have trust jockey Mark Zahra can have her in the right spot. RACE 8 (ASCOT): THE QUOKKA (1200m) $50 win OVERPASS (1) at $2.05 The Bjorn Baker sprinter has been a class above his rivals when he travels to Perth, unbeaten in four runs at Ascot. That could be the case again in his bid for a Quokka hat-trick after his terrific return in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes where he finished a close second to Briasa, and this year's field is arguably not as strong as past editions. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ QUADZILLA LEG 1 – RACE 6 Tough start to the quaddie. CATAHOULA (11) couldn't get past PRIMAL SPIRIT (4) at Sandown Lakeside but will likely have more improvement being second-up. Both runners will give a good sight up front. BARBARIC LAD (7) was running on from back in the field after drawing wide gates in his past two runs in BM74 grade, and can settle closer from barrier one. Singaporean import RAVALLI (5) has trialled well for his first Australian start. DIRTY GRIN (6) started the prep with back-to-back BM64 wins before running into smart galloper King Zephyr at Sandown Hillside. 1ST LEG: 4, 5, 6, 7, 11 LEG 2 – RACE 7 LET'SFACETHEMUSIC (1) bounced back with a second behind Manolo Bling at Bendigo after he was well beaten in the Darby Munro in Sydney. Prior to that he won a Kilmore maiden and was runner-up in a handicap race down the Flemington straight. STAGE 'N' SCREEN (7) has had little go her way this prep. She was held up for a run first-up at The Valley and then pulled up lame last start. EL TERCERO (4) has won his past two but is deep into his first preparation. He was slow out at Pakenham last time out but was still too good. 2ND LEG: 1, 4, 7 LEG 2 – RACE 8 Six runners come out of the Bert Bryant Handicap at Caulfield with PREFERENTIAL (14), FORTUNE (3) and KHOR (4) all finishing inside a length behind My Brothers Keeper. Fortune snuck a run on the inside and hit the front at the 150m before he was swamped late by My Brothers Keeper and Preferential out wide. He has drawn better than Preferential, who may not get a run as first emergency. Chris Waller import SUN GOD (5) looks ready now third-up. 3RD LEG: 3, 4, 5, 14 LEG 4 – RACE 9 Another leg to go wide. AMBASSADORIAL (9) drops back to a BM78 after resuming with a solid third in a BM84 at The Valley. WAIMARIE (8) is also second-up and both her wins over 1600m have been on wet tracks, which includes one at the track. TYPHOON HARMONY (7) is racing well with three straight placings. SPACE AGE (3) was a big improver last start at Randwick-Kensington and was held up for a run. LE ZEBRA (1) is back in trip and grade. 4TH LEG: 1, 3, 7, 8, 9 Cost $100 for 33.33% SKINNY QUADDIE 1ST LEG: 4, 7, 11 2ND LEG: 1, 4 3RD LEG: 3, 14 4TH LEG: 7, 8, 9 Cost $100 for 277.77.18% Originally published as Four-Play, Quadzilla: $200 betting strategy for Saturday
