Dabrowski and Routliffe reach Wimbledon third round in women's doubles

WIMBLEDON - Ottawa's Gabriela Dabrowski and partner Erin Routliffe, of New Zealand, advanced to the third round of women's doubles at Wimbledon with a 6-3, 6-3 win Friday over Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez and Russia's Polina Kudermetova.
The No. 2 seeds converted four of 13 break-point chances and won 78 per cent of their second-serve points.
Dabrowski and Routliffe are looking to add a second Grand Slam title after winning the 2023 U.S. Open. Routliffe, who grew up near Toronto and lives in Montreal, represents her native New Zealand internationally.

Naomi Osaka powers into semifinals in Montreal, will face Clara Tauson

MONTREAL (AP) — Naomi Osaka powered into her first National Bank Open semifinal, beating No. 10 seed Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday night. Osaka advanced to face No. 16 seed Clara Tauson, who eliminated sixth-seeded Madison Keys 6-1, 6-4 in the first quarterfinal of the night. Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion who reached No. 1 in the rankings, continued her best performance in a WTA 1000 tournament since reaching the final in Miami in 2022. She stepped away from tennis for 15 months toward the end of that season and had daughter Shai in July 2023. The native of Japan is seeking her eighth career title and her first since the 2021 Australian Open. Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko takes on ninth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the other semifinal Wednesday. Mboko, who's playing in her first main draw at the National Bank Open, will rise into the WTA's top 50 after beginning the year outside the top 300. The 18-year-old from Toronto has defeated five higher-ranked opponents en route to the semifinals, including top seed Coco Gauff in the fourth round. Tauson dedicated her victory to her grandfather, Peter, during an on-court interview at IGA Stadium. 'I really wanted to win for him today,' she told the crowd before breaking down in tears. 'I really wanted to come out here and show my best tennis for him, and hopefully he's watching.' Tauson said she only found out about her grandfather's death on Monday, a day after she eliminated Wimbledon champion and No. 3-ranked Iga Swiatek 7-6 (1), 6-3. She spoke of him as one of the biggest supporters of her career. 'He used to coach me a little bit playing tennis and drove me to almost every single practice from my school,' the 22-year-old native of Denmark said. 'It was tough news yesterday morning when I woke up, but I think it's for the better. He was not feeling great for a while.' Tauson hasn't lost a set in the tournament. Keys failed to convert two break chances in the first game. After the American held serve, Tauson won the ensuing five games to take the first set. 'Not my best performance out there today,' said Keys, who won this year's Australian Open. 'She played amazing tonight. She played incredibly well, she served really well. It was just one of those things where I felt like I kept trying different things, and she was just beating me. 'When she's serving like that, it's going to be really hard to break her.' ___

Taylor Fritz beats Andrey Rublev to reach semifinals in Toronto

TORONTO (AP) — Taylor Fritz beat No. 6 seed Andrey Rublev 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Tuesday night to reach the semifinals of the National Bank Open. The second-seeded Fritz finished with 20 aces, including one that finished off the match. He will face the winner of the late quarterfinal between No. 4 Ben Shelton of the U.S. and No. 9 Alex de Minaur of Australia. Wednesday's other semifinal will see top-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany, the 2017 tournament winner in Montreal, take on No. 11 Karen Khachanov of Russia. The final is Thursday. Fritz came out firing in hazy and breezy conditions with three aces to win the first game. He then broke Rublev in securing the match's first eight points. The 27-year-old American, who sits fourth in the ATP Tour rankings and lost last year's U.S. Open final to No. 1 Jannik Sinner, fired two more aces to go up 4-1 before serving out the set. Looking for his 11th ATP Tour victory — and second Masters 1000 crown — Fritz broke Rublev with the second set tied 4-4, but the Russian returned the favor to stay alive in the next game and went up 6-5 before Fritz forced the tiebreaker. Fritz lost in the Wimbledon semis to No. 2-ranked Carlos Alcaraz, who along with a host of top players including Sinner, No. 5 Jack Draper and No. 6 Novak Djokovic all skipped this hard-court event expanded to two weeks in 2025. Rublev lost in last year's final to Australia's Alexei Popyrin, when the event was played in Montreal. The 27-year-old from Moscow made the fourth round of both Wimbledon and the French Open. ___

Canadian Vanessa Borovilos sets U.S. Women's Amateur scoring record with 63 at Bandon Dunes

BANDON, Ore. — A crowd had gathered around the ninth green at Bandon Dunes, with whispers weaving through the gallery about the history about to happen. Canadian Vanessa Borovilos, on the par-5 green in two shots, was a couple putts away from history. Sitting at 8 under for her round, an eagle would tie her for the lowest score by a female golfer in USGA championship history. A birdie would still put her in the record books. Th eagle attempt slid past the hole, but she poured in the birdie put from 4 feet and the crowd rejoiced. Borovilos had completed the lowest round in the history of the U.S. Women's Amateur. Borovilos shot 9-under 63 on Tuesday at Bandon Dunes, setting a record for the lowest round of stroke play in the 125-year history of the U.S. Women's Amateur. On a calm, sunny morning along Oregon's Pacific Coast, Borovilos had 10 birdies and climbed up the leaderboard one birdie at a time. She sits at 7 under overall, one behind leader Eila Galitsky after the morning wave and will be one of the top seeds heading into match play, which begins Wednesday. "Being off early in the morning, there's really no wind. We were kind of just cruising out there," Borovilos said. "Today, I think I took a little bit more time on my shots, just to make sure I felt completely comfortable over every shot. "But once the putts started falling, it was kind of easy to get into that rhythm and enjoy the views where I could, so it was a good day." Borovilos, a rising sophomore at Texas A&M, had six birdies in her first nine holes, the back nine at Bandon Dunes, to turn in 6-under 30. She started the front with a birdie then carded her lone bogey of the day, but no need to fret. A pair of birdies followed that up, and she closed with the birdie on the 18th to sign a record scorecard. After she made about a 25 footer on the 18th hole to turn in 6 under, Borovilos jokingly asked her coach what the course record was. She said she got lucky with a couple putts catching the hole, but the momentum started early, and she rode it into the early afternoon. "I think it is my record personally," Borovilos said, "but it's just another day. We have a couple more matches to go this week, so not thinking too much of it. "I don't think I've had 10 birdies before. I was enjoying it."
