Vice-President's Enclave: Dr M L Raja appointed as Dr S Radhakrishnan Chair

NEW DELHI: Vice-President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday nominated Dr M L Raja for the prestigious Dr S Radhakrishnan Chair for a one-year term, effective from 7 May 2025 to 6 May 2026.
The Dr S Radhakrishnan Chair was instituted by the Rajya Sabha in 2009 with the aim of promoting scholarly research on various aspects of parliamentary democracy in India.
In an official statement delivered during an event at the Vice-President's Enclave, Dhankhar announced Dr M L Raja's nomination and remarked, that the Dr S Radhakrishnan Chair was established to honour the legacy of "one of the distinguished sons of Bharat, the first Vice-President who became President, Dr S Radhakrishnan."
Dr M L Raja, from Tamil Nadu, is the second individual to be conferred with the position of Chair. Jawahar Kaul, a prominent journalist from Jammu and Kashmir, earlier served as Chair.
While Dr Raja is technically the third recipient of the position, he is second functioning Chair as the position was made operational during Dhankhar's tenure.
Speaking about the significance of the chair, Dhankhar said, "In 1962, September 5 was declared as Teacher's Day. It happens to be the birthday of Dr S Radhakrishnan. This underscores that though you may have any position — President, Vice-President. philosopher or author — social recognition comes by virtue of being a teacher for Radhakrishnan."

‘Most spoilt and privileged woman': Kangana Ranaut slams Jaya Bachchan for pushing man trying to take selfie

BJP MP Kangana Ranaut slammed Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan, known for her no-nonsense personality, for pushing a man trying to take a selfie with her at the Constitution Club in Delhi on Tuesday. Without mincing her words, Kangana called Jaya the 'most spoilt and privileged woman.' Sharing the viral video of the incident on her Instagram stories, the BJP MP claimed that people put up with her 'tantrums/nonsense behaviour just because she is Amitabh Bachchan Ji's wife.' Insulting both Jaya Bachchan and the Samajwadi Party, Kangana Ranaut said, 'That Samajwadi topi looks like a rooster comb, while she looks like a fighting cock!!' 'Such disgrace and shame,' she added. Kangana Ranaut's IG story In the viral video, Jaya Bachchan can be seen pushing the man away and saying, 'Kya kar rahe hai aap (What are you doing?) What is this?' In the video, Jaya's fellow parliamentarian and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi is also seen standing near her. When Jaya shoves the man, Priyanka turns to look around and then walks towards the Club. Earlier, Jaya Bachchan blasted people in public. During the special debate on Operation Sindoor in the Parliament, the Rajya Sabha MP slammed the members of the treasury bench for interrupting her and said, 'Either you speak or I will speak.' Priyanka Chaturvedi, who was sitting beside Bachchan in the Rajya Sabha, also received a minor scolding from the Samajwadi Party leader. When Bachchan asked the treasury bench not to interrupt her when she was speaking, Chaturvedi was seen gesturing with her right arm. This caused Bachchan to turn towards the Sena UBT MP and say, 'Priyanka, don't control me.' Also, in July-August 2024, Jaya Bachchan got infuriated in the Rajya Sabha when she was introduced as 'Jaya Amitabh Bachchan' by the Upper House chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar. Expressing her strong disapproval of the way she was introduced, she said, 'I, Jaya Amitabh Bachchan, want to say this that I am an artist, and I understand body language and expressions. And sir, your tone is not acceptable. We are colleagues, sir. You may be sitting on the Chair...'

Sahney reiterates demand for SCL Mohali upgrade

1 2 Chandigarh: Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney reiterated the demand for the upgrade of the Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali. His demand comes after he welcomed the Union cabinet's recent approval for the expansion of Continental Device India Private Limited's semiconductor manufacturing facility in the city. Sahney said that the Centre already allocated Rs 10,000 crore for the modernisation of SCL Mohali as part of a larger Rs 76,000 crore plan for India's semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in 2024. He expressed disappointment that no progress was made on the project, stating that Punjab's full potential in the semiconductor industry can only be achieved once this long-awaited upgrade is completed. "Modernising SCL Mohali with state-of-the-art fabrication and research facilities will attract top global technology partners, create thousands of high-value jobs for our youth, and establish Punjab as a hub for innovation and advanced manufacturing," Sahney said.
