Pahalgam, Operation Sindoor show we have no option but to remain united: V-P Dhankhar

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar Tuesday said Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor had shown 'we have no other option but to remain united and grow stronger'. He also called for political consensus regarding national security and economic progress. The V-P told the Rajya Sabha interns: 'On issues of national security and economic progress, all factions need to put national interest over partisan priorities. I will appeal to everyone in the political spectrum to seriously reflect and come to a conclusion that on issues of national security… growth… our internal security, there must be consensus.' Referring to the Pahalgam terror attack and India's strike on terror sites in Pakistan and PoK in response, the V-P said there was an 'upsurge in nationalism'. 'The recent episode, Operation Sindoor, has changed our mindset massively. We are now nationalistic as never before. This is reflected in participation of all political delegations that have gone abroad to project our message of peace and our complete intolerance to terrorism… We have no other option but to remain united and grow stronger,' he said. 'Targeting only the terrorists because our civilisational essence is 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (world is one). Therefore India's strategy has been to target only terrorists and not civilians,' he V-P said 'indigenous strength' was needed for national security. 'Peace is secured when you are ever-ready for war.' Earlier in the day, the V-P announced the nomination of Dr M L Raja, an ophthalmologist and historian from Tamil Nadu, as the Rajya Sabha's Dr S Radhakrishnan Chair for 2025-2026.

Vice-President's Enclave: Dr M L Raja appointed as Dr S Radhakrishnan Chair

NEW DELHI: Vice-President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday nominated Dr M L Raja for the prestigious Dr S Radhakrishnan Chair for a one-year term, effective from 7 May 2025 to 6 May 2026. The Dr S Radhakrishnan Chair was instituted by the Rajya Sabha in 2009 with the aim of promoting scholarly research on various aspects of parliamentary democracy in India. In an official statement delivered during an event at the Vice-President's Enclave, Dhankhar announced Dr M L Raja's nomination and remarked, that the Dr S Radhakrishnan Chair was established to honour the legacy of "one of the distinguished sons of Bharat, the first Vice-President who became President, Dr S Radhakrishnan." Dr M L Raja, from Tamil Nadu, is the second individual to be conferred with the position of Chair. Jawahar Kaul, a prominent journalist from Jammu and Kashmir, earlier served as Chair. While Dr Raja is technically the third recipient of the position, he is second functioning Chair as the position was made operational during Dhankhar's tenure. Speaking about the significance of the chair, Dhankhar said, "In 1962, September 5 was declared as Teacher's Day. It happens to be the birthday of Dr S Radhakrishnan. This underscores that though you may have any position — President, Vice-President. philosopher or author — social recognition comes by virtue of being a teacher for Radhakrishnan."
