Iga Swiatek highlights key change for final run at Cincinnati Open

Iga Swiatek has highlighted a key change to the surface at the Cincinnati Open which she believes has been a major factor in her run to the final. The Wimbledon champion and world No 3 has not dropped a set in her four matches so far in Cincinnati and defeated ninth seed Elena Rybakina on Sunday in the semi-finals. Swiatek will face Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini in the final on Monday night, and acknowledged that she feels 'different' competing in Cincinnati compared to previous years. 'I think the surface was pretty crazy, and now it's something that you can play tennis on,' Swiatek said, after her semi-final win. 'So now it's a bit slower, and it makes more sense. Also this year, I feel like I'm just progressing match by match. 'In past years, I feel like the matches have been tough, like from the beginning. So, I just feel a bit different.' Swiatek won the US Open in 2022 but has not progressed beyond the quarter-finals in the two years since. Meanwhile, Swiatek is set to make a late call on her participation in the new-look mixed doubles event in New York. Swiatek's final against Paolini is scheduled for an 8pm start time on Monday night, with the Pole due on court for her first mixed doubles match alongside Casper Ruud at midday on Tuesday, two hours away in the Big Apple. Paolini, as a result of her participation in the final in Cincinnati, has already withdrawn from the mixed doubles event.

Iga Swiatek powers into first Cincinnati final with battling win over Rybakina

Iga Swiatek, the third seed, defeated Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday to reach her first Cincinnati Open final. The Pole had her hands full in the early stages of the 98-minute match but took advantage of a sudden dip in Rybakina's form to win four consecutive games and wrap up the first set before easing through the second. 'That was a tough match,' Swiatek said. 'At the beginning the level was pretty crazy. We played so fast that sometimes we couldn't even run to the second ball. But I was there to play with intensity and good quality and I am super happy with the performance. I served much better, so for sure it helped and I wouldn't change anything.' In the final, Swiatek will play the Italian seventh seed, Jasmine Paolini, who beat Russia's Veronika Kudermetova 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3. Paolini served for the match in the second set only to see her advantage slip away, but she eventually completed the job, with Kudermetova's tally of 75 unforced errors costing her. In the first semi-final, Rybakina, the ninth seed, used a cross-court forehand that caught the line for a break and then held for a 5-3 lead in the first set but a focused Swiatek came back from the precipice and attacked the Kazakh's serve to draw level at 5-5. From there, the Wimbledon champion held serve before wrapping up the opening set when she broke for a second time after a Rybakina backhand attempt came up well short. Rybakina, who enjoyed a swift victory against the world No 1, Aryna Sabalenka, in the previous round, was broken for a third time early in the second set after a backhand error put Swiatek ahead 3-1. Swiatek faced some resistance from Rybakina three games later but dug deep to recover from 15-40 down to protect her serve and reach 5-2 before wrapping it up on serve when Rybakina sent a forehand return long. Swiatek, who has not lost a set in Cincinnati, will be seeking her second title in her past three tournaments. She won Wimbledon when she swept aside Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 in the final and then lost against Clara Tauson of Denmark in the fourth round in Toronto. Swiatek will be a heavy favourite in the final on Monday as she looks to go to the US Open with another title under her belt. She is 5-0 in matches against Paolini, including in last year's French Open final. 'Anyone who is going to be in the final will be super tough,' Swiatek said. 'I will just focus on myself and try to continue the work that I'm been doing. I feel I have progressed at this tournament.'

Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper in US Open controversy as games cut and stars fume

Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper in US Open controversy as games cut and stars fume The British pair have arrived in New York to compete in the new-look event and will actually face each other Raducanu and Draper will go head-to-head in New York this week British tennis stars Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper will go head-to-head in the opening round of the US Open mixed doubles this week, with the revamped event already proving controversial. ‌ It was announced earlier this year that Raducanu would be teaming up with French Open champion and world number two Carlos Alcaraz as a wildcard pairing for the event in New York, with that announcement sparking rumours of a potential romance between the two stars. Meanwhile, Draper is teaming up with American ace Jessica Pegula after both of their original partners, Paula Badosa and Tommy Paul, withdrew. ‌ The draw for the first round of the 16-pair event has now been made, with childhood friends Draper and Raducanu facing each other when the competition gets under way on Tuesday (August 19). ‌ Held over two days, the mixed doubles competition has been moved to before the main tournament, with the singles events at the last Grand Slam of the year set to get under way on Sunday. Matches at the event will involve three short sets consisting of four games, with no advantage played at deuce. Meanwhile, if both teams have won four games in a set, a 10-point tie-break will be played, rather than a third set, with the winning team the first to reach 10 points. In the final, a three-set match will be played, with six games in each set and a 10-point tie-break held should both teams share sets. Article continues below A huge $1 million (£750,000) is up for grabs for the winners, with Wimbledon champions Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek, 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic and 45-year-old former world number one Venus Williams among the big names taking part. The winner of the opening clash between Raducanu-Alcaraz and Draper-Pegula could face Djokovic and his partner Olga Danilovic in the next round, if the Serbian pair manage to beat Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev. However, while the event boats plenty of high-profile partnerships, it has been criticised by some in the game, with 59-time Grand Slam winner Martina Navratilova slamming it as "making a mockery" of the mixed doubles title. ‌ Taking to X when plans for the event were first announced earlier this year, the 68-year-old wrote: 'It's an exhibition and I am fine with that. "Shame for the people who specialize in doubles and mixed and many will miss out on the opportunity to play and make some good money. I hope it's not counted as a real tournament." She added: "How can it count when it is an exhibition where highly ranked doubles players who don't get a chance to play at all? That is just wrong. Makes a mockery of the title…just imo [in my opinion]". ‌ Last year's US Open mixed doubles winners Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori also described the format change as a "profound injustice that disrespects an entire category of players". In a joint statement, the Italian partnership said: "Making decisions just following the logic of profit is profoundly wrong in some situations. "In the last few weeks we received the news that the US Open mixed doubles tournament will be completely turned upside down, cancelled and replaced with a pseudo-exhibition focused only on entertainment and show. Article continues below "We see it as a profound injustice that disrespects an entire category of players. We don't know at the moment if we'll have the chance to defend our title but we hope this remains an isolated case." However, Draper defended the format when he was asked if he would be interested in participating earlier this year "I'll definitely play," said the 23-year-old. "I think it's a good format to get prepared for the US Open and having a shot at playing with another top player."
