Kota Kinabalu: SMJ Energy Sdn Bhd (SMJ Energy) recorded a profit after tax of RM362 million based on its unaudited financial results for the year ended Dec 31, 2024, a nearly 40 per cent increase from RM259 million in 2023. The impressive performance underscores the company's resilience and strong fundamentals, achieved despite a volatile global energy landscape. The growth was driven by strategic asset optimisation, disciplined cost management and sustained revenue growth. Revenue for the year saw a significant year-on-year increase, bolstered by strong contributions from key assets such as the Samarang Production Sharing Contract (PSC), LNG Train 9 liquefaction plant, Petronas Chemical Fertiliser Sabah Sdn Bhd (PCFSSB), as well as Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) and Floating Storage Operations (FSO) under Sabah International Petroleum (SIP), which remains debt-free. Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, who is also Chairman of SMJ Energy, attributed the achievement to the dedication and professionalism of the company's team, in close collaboration with key stakeholders, including Petronas. 'With a well-balanced portfolio across Upstream, LNG, Petchem and FPSO/FSO segments, SMJ Energy is well-positioned to maintain financial strength even in a low oil price environment,' he said. However, Masidi urged continued vigilance amid global economic uncertainties, including the ongoing tariff conflicts and fluctuating oil prices. 'The volatility in global oil markets highlights the importance of maintaining proactive risk management and prudent investment strategies,' he said. Beyond profitability, SMJ Energy is playing an active role in strengthening local participation in Sabah's oil and gas services and equipment (OGSE) sector. In 2024, the total value of contracts awarded to Sabahan companies rose to RM2 billion, a significant leap from RM613 million in 2021, without compromising on cost, safety, quality or project schedules. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? No plans to contest in any by-election after leaving Umno: Tengku Zafrul
Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz ( pic ) today clarified that he has never considered contesting in any by-election, either at the parliament or state level, following his exit from Umno and his announcement of intent to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) on May 30. In a statement posted on his social media today, Tengku Zafrul stressed that the possibility of running in a by-election was never part of his decision-making process when he chose to leave Umno. Advertisement 'I would like to make it clear that no discussion related to this matter ever took place, and it was not part of my consideration in making that decision. 'I strongly disagree with triggering by-elections without urgent necessity, as they consume both time and public funds,' he said. Addressing his resignation from Umno, Tengku Zafrul reiterated that it was a personal decision, made without external pressure. 'I acknowledge it was not an easy decision, but I carefully considered all views and opinions before arriving at it. Advertisement 'In a democratic society, every individual has the right to make personal choices. I deeply appreciate the feedback and reception to my decision,' he said. Tengku Zafrul also expressed his gratitude to Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the Umno Supreme Council, and especially the grassroots members in the Kota Raja division for their support during his time with the party. As for his Cabinet position, Tengku Zafrul said he would leave the matter entirely to the discretion of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'I am always ready to serve the country in any capacity. I left the corporate world with the intention to contribute, and as long as my service is needed, I will continue to give without necessarily holding any position,' he said. Tengku Zafrul also confirmed that he will continue serving as a Senator until the end of his term this December. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? SST expands from July, but essentials stay tax-free
by AUFA MARDHIAH STARTING July 1, 2025, the government will expand the Sales and Service Tax (SST) to include more luxury goods and service sectors — but essential items and key services for Malaysians will remain tax-free. 'To ensure the majority of the people are not affected by the SST review, the MADANI Government is taking a targeted approach to ensure basic goods and services are not taxed. 'In addition, various facilities are also provided to reduce the impact on micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs),' said the Finance Minister 2, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan (picture), in a statement. The move is part of efforts to strengthen the country's finances without raising the cost of living for most people. Under the updated rules, essential goods like rice, vegetables, cooking oil, medicine, books, pet food, cement, sand, and farming supplies will continue to be exempt from sales tax. According to the ministry, this is to protect the cost of living and keep inflation under control. However, some non-essential and luxury items will now be taxed. A 5% sales tax will apply to things like king crab, truffle mushrooms, imported fruits, essential oils, silk fabrics, and industrial machinery. Premium items such as racing bicycles and antique artwork will be taxed at 10%. The service tax will also be extended to six new sectors — rental and leasing, construction, financial services, private healthcare, education, and beauty services. The tax rates will range from 6% to 8%, depending on the type of service and revenue earned. For rental and leasing services, an 8% tax will be charged only if the company earns more than RM500,000 a year. Exemptions include residential property rentals, reading materials, overseas leasing, and MSMEs earning below the threshold. Construction services will face a 6% tax if the provider earns over RM1.5 million a year. Housing projects and public facilities are exempt, and B2B transactions may also qualify for relief to avoid double taxation. In finance, only services with fees or commissions will be taxed at 8%. Basic services like savings accounts, interest charges, and Islamic financing will remain tax-free. Other exemptions include forex gains, remittances, and life or medical insurance brokerage. Private healthcare will only be taxed for non-Malaysians at a 6% rate. Malaysians will remain exempt from both public and private healthcare costs, including traditional treatments and allied health services such as physiotherapy, audiology, and speech therapy. In education, private schools that charge more than RM60,000 per student per year will be taxed. However, Malaysian students in all education levels will not be affected. Special exemption will also be given to students with disabilities. Beauty services like facials and hairstyling will be taxed at 8%, but only if the business earns more than RM500,000 annually. The government will give companies time to adjust and has promised no penalties for non-compliance until the end of 2025. 'The additional revenue from this improved SST will support further enhancements in public services, particularly in expanding cash assistance to the people and improving infrastructure and service delivery nationwide,' he said further. Businesses are encouraged to check if they fall under the new tax rules and to consult the Royal Malaysian Customs Department for guidance. The measure forms part of the government's broader MADANI economic framework aimed at strengthening Malaysia's social safety net and promoting targeted taxation without increasing the cost of living for the general public.

Ex-KL Tower operator loses bid to cite minister for contempt
Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Ho Kit Yen, FMT Text Size: The Kuala Lumpur High Court dismissed Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd's bid to bring contempt proceedings and secure an injunction against the government and LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd with costs of RM65,000. (Envato Elements pic) Kuala Lumpur: The High Court here has dismissed an attempt by the former operator of KL Tower to initiate contempt proceedings against communications minister Fahmi Fadzil and seven others, including federal territories land and mines director general Azmi Mohd Zain. Justice Roz Mawar Rozain ruled that the plaintiffs – Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd and Menara KL Sdn Bhd – failed to establish the commission of acts by the defendants that disrupted the administration of justice or court proceedings. Advertisement 'The plaintiffs' lease expired on May 31 and (the government, named as a defendant in the proceedings) is entitled to retake possession,' the judge said when handing down her decision. Ros Mawar added that LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd, LSH Best Builders Sdn Bhd, and Service Master (M) Sdn Bhd, also named as defendants, came in subsequently under a new concession agreement. She ordered Hydroshoppe and Menara KL to pay a total of RM25,000 in costs to the government and LSH Service Master. The court also dismissed an injunction application filed by Hydroshoppe against the government and LSH Service Master, holding that it had been rendered academic. Advertisement The judge ordered Hydroshoppe to pay the government and LSH Service Master an additional sum of RM40,000 as costs over the dismissal of the injunction. The court will hear the bids by the government and LSH Service Master to strike out Hydroshoppe's lawsuit on July 14. Hydroshoppe and Menara KL filed the suit claiming that the LSH group had induced the commission by the government of a breach of contract. They asked the court to declare the award of the KL Tower concession to LSH Service Master void and unlawful. They also sought an estimated RM1 billion in damages, and for the concession to be transferred back to them. Lawyer Vinayak Sri Ram appeared for Hydroshoppe while senior federal counsel appeared for Fahmi and lawyer Malik Imtiaz Sarwar represented LSH Service Master. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
