Netflix drops first trailer for one of my most anticipated dark thriller shows — and it's a bold twist on revenge
'The Resurrected' is a Taiwanese revenge thriller in which two desperate mothers resurrect the deceased ringleader of a telecommunications fraud ring to avenge their kidnapped daughters. It's not a premise I've ever come across before, as bringing someone back to life solely for revenge is a pretty wild hook.
After months of waiting, we finally have our first trailer, along with a release date of October 9. That's pretty perfect timing for the Halloween lead-up.
On death row, Chang Shih-kai (Fu Meng-Po) is strapped to the execution platform. His mother, Yueh-sin (Chung Hsin-ling), wears an unsettling smile as she looks on, while two women, Wang Hui-chun (Shu Qi) and Chao Ching (Sinje Lee), the relatives of his victims, watch with cold detachment.
The execution is over in moments. For Wang, it brings no closure, only a sharper edge to her grief and fury. In a cruel twist, death feels less like justice for Chang and more like an escape.
Refusing to let him slip away so easily, Wang and Chao perform a forbidden ritual that pulls him back from the grave, but only for seven days. In that brief span, Chang finds himself stripped of freedom and trapped in their unrelenting quest for vengeance, enduring both physical torment and moral reckoning.
Of course, resurrecting such evil comes with consequences, and the trailer makes it clear that their revenge soon spirals out of control.

Along with the trailer and release date, we also got a longer synopsis: 'Set in the fictional city of Benkha, The Resurrected centers on two mothers united by hatred, seeking revenge for their daughters caught in a fraud and kidnapping case.
'With help from a mysterious goddess, they revive the deceased ringleader of the fraud scheme to punish him. Yet, despite inflicting relentless pain, their fury remains unquenched. As dark secrets unravel, their alliance is tested, forcing them to confront the limits of justice and their own morality.'
Helmed by Leste Chen ('Eternal Summer') and Hsu Chao-jen ('Living'), this revenge thriller brings together a strong creative team.
Leading the cast are internationally acclaimed actresses Shu Qi and Sinje Lee, making their first appearance in a Chinese-language Netflix series. The lineup also includes a special guest role from Golden Horse Award winner Alyssa Chia.
Shu Qi said (h/t Variety): 'I'm really looking forward to it. When I first received the script, I felt it was a bold and groundbreaking story — not just for me as an actress, but also for Chinese-language series in general. I've already seen some rough cuts during dubbing, but when I saw the teaser, I still went, 'Wow!''
Sinje Lee also added: 'I've never encountered a female-driven story that's so intense, a little wild, and deeply emotional. It was such a thrill to be a part of it, and of course, I'm even more excited for the day we get to share it with audiences around the world.'
'The Resurrected' is already on my must-watch list, and I'm even more excited for the colder months to roll around. Being a Halloween lover, I'm always on the lookout for darker thrillers to dive into, and Netflix is delivering with this supernatural series dropping at the start of October.
Even better, the first two episodes will be showcased at the 30th Busan International Film Festival this September, so we're bound to start seeing early reactions and buzz well before the official release.
The premise alone has me hooked because it feels fresh compared to the usual revenge thrillers. The idea of bringing someone back to life for revenge is a bold concept and one I haven't really seen before. With such talented directors and actors involved, I'm confident it's going to be intense and emotional.

'I love this script, but I'm still walking down the same ground I've already walked. It just kind of unenthused me. This last movie, I've got to not know what I'm doing again. I've got to be in uncharted territory.' By the sounds of things, there was also no better director at the helm to handle the film, which takes place eight years after Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. 'I think me and David Fincher are the two best directors. So the idea that David Fincher actually wants to adapt my work, to me, shows a level of seriousness towards my work that I think needs to be taken into account,' Tarantino explained. Should there ever be an occasion that the mind behind both movies is needed on set, Tarantino assured that he would make himself available. "I'm moving back and forth between here and Israel, so I won't be on the set every day and everything. But, yeah, I'll be around if they need me to do something, you know, I will." Filming is currently underway, with Brad Pitt already spotted in Booth's legendary worn-down shirt, but there's still no release date confirmed from the big red N just yet as to when we'll see him in action again. Combine Pedro Almodóvar with stop-motion and you get Adult Swim's most unexpected yet perfect show
In the annals of things I could not have seen coming, none has been more unexpected than 'Women Wearing Shoulder Pads,' a queer Spanish-language stop-motion comedy melodrama, set in the aesthetic world of a 1980s Pedro Almodóvar film. (It arrives Sunday at midnight on Adult Swim, the home of things one doesn't see coming, and premieres the next day on HBO Max.) Though it takes place in Ecuador, its central character, Marioneta Negocios (Pepa Pallarés), is Spanish, and it's easy enough to imagine Almodóvar muse Carmen Maura in the role — though it is also impossible to imagine the story told as well, or at all, in any other way. When I call this series perfect, notwithstanding the happy imperfections of its puppets and sets, it's not because everything works as its meant to, but because there's nothing you can measure it against — it occupies its own self-created space. Every element is necessary. Even presenting it in English would be to lose romantic, dramatic, telenovelistic force. At the center of the story is the cuy, a guinea pig eaten in Andean South America, though in this telling they're also used in a version of bullfighting. (Some cuys are large enough to ride on.) The primary action is a power struggle between Marioneta, a socialite running a campaign promoting cuy as pets, not food, and Doña Quispe (Laura Torres), who has risen from life as a humble butcher to the anything-but-humble CEO of the country's most famous restaurant, El Cuchillo (the knife). Mixed up in their lives are Coquita Buenasuerte (Gabriela Cartol), Marioneta's seemingly happy-go-lucky assistant; Espada Muleta (Kerygma Flores), a matadora in love with Marioneta; Nina (Nicole Vazquez), Doña Quispe's vegetarian daughter, serving a pro-cuy group as its Minister of Refreshments and Head of Recruitment for Rebellious Teens — 'I have looked upon the caged cuy through the prison of capitalist enterprise, through the hubristic iron bars of a homocentric world view' — who will become a pawn in the older women's game. Not everything will be as it seems. Created by Gonzalo Cordova (a veteran of 'Tuca & Bertie' and 'Adam Ruins Everything') and produced by the Mexican animation studio Cinema Fantasma, the series comes packaged as eight 11-minute episodes — that is cartoon length — which neatly constitute a short feature film. On the bill are mystery, suspense, terror, revenge, hot romance (including some puppet sex), masked stalkers, performance art, love notes posted with knives, parodies of television shows and commercials, old secrets coming to light and nuns singing karaoke. From 'Gumby' to 'Rudolph' to 'Wallace and Gromit' to 'The Fantastic Mr. Fox,' stop motion is of all forms of animation most magical and in its real-space, three dimensional, handcrafted way the most like life, if not necessarily the most lifelike. (It can look ungainly, which is also part of its charm.) It's a magnification of childhood playtime, a puppet show in which the puppets have broken loose from the puppeteers. The cleverness of the execution is as or more important than how seamless it is. 'Women Wearing Shoulder Pads' does all sorts of neat tricks, some you notice and more you simply accept — and when deemed necessary, or just amusing, it will insert a live-action hand or mouth. It's an exaggerated world — appropriately to the heavy-breathing material — but emotionally expressive, even moving, and lots of fun.
