Area universities among dozens under investigation for alleged racial discrimination
Two area universities are under investigation for elelged racial discrimination.

The University of Cincinnati and Ohio State University are on a list of 45 different universities that are now under investigation by the US Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR), according to CBS-affaliate WBNS and our sister station at WCPO.
This investigation specifically centers on schools that are partnering with The Ph.D. Project, an organization that focuses on helping students of all backgrounds pursue a business PhD.

Department of Education officials said that the group limits eligibility based on race and that colleges that partner with it are 'engaging in race-exclusionary practices in their graduate programs.'
In response to the investigation, a spokesperson with Ohio State told WBNS that the university 'does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity or any other protected class, and our PhD programs are open to all qualified applicants.'
'Given the extent to which our university, like most educational institutions, relies on federal funding to deliver and sustain our core mission, it is untenable to operate as if noncompliance with these directives is an effective option,' UC President Neville Pinto told WCPO.

Denver police say driver flees scene of crash with officer inside the vehicle
The Denver Police Department said one of its officers had a close call Sunday after a suspect crashed a vehicle, then tried to flee the scene with the officer inside. Police said the crash occurred around 3:46 p.m. near the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Osage Street. When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive person inside a white GMC Yukon. Authorities said an officer entered the vehicle to turn it off and render aid to the driver, when the driver suddenly regained consciousness and tried to flee the scene with the officer still inside. CBS A few blocks away, police used a precision immobilization technique and forced the Yukon into a light pole, bringing it to a stop. Officers then took the suspect into custody. No one was injured in the crash, said police, and the case remains under investigation.

Pete Hegseth Threatens to Send Marines to LA ICE Protests
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has threatened to send the Marines to quell ongoing protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in Los Angeles. Hegseth posted on X on that in addition to 'mobilizing the National Guard IMMEDIATELY to support federal law enforcement' in California's largest city, 'active duty Marines at Camp Pendleton will also be mobilized' if the violence continues. 'They are on high alert,' he added. The Daily Beast has reached out to the Pentagon for further comment on Hegseth's proposal. The protests first erupted on Friday afternoon following a series of raids by ICE officials across the city, with police arresting dozens of demonstrators outside the downtown federal building where immigrants were being detained. The White House has already dispatched an estimated 2,000 National Guardsmen to address the unrest, which continued through Saturday night. Reuters reported that a number of protesters on Friday threw what appeared to be blocks of broken concrete at police, which were met with flash bangs, tear gas, and pepper spray. Up to 400 people also gathered in the city of Paramount, Los Angeles County, on Saturday afternoon. Some threw rocks and other objects at law enforcement, with police firing 'non-lethal munitions' in an effort to disperse the crowds, CBS reported. One person was taken to a hospital not long after noon, with two others arrested for injuring peace officers, one of whom is accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail that struck three deputies. At least one vehicle is also reported to have been torched in the neighbouring city of Compton. By evening, the crowds had again gathered outside the federal building in downtown Los Angeles, where they were again met with flash-bangs and tear gas, per CBS. 'The violent mob assaults on ICE and Federal Law Enforcement are designed to prevent the removal of Criminal Illegal Aliens from our soil; a dangerous invasion facilitated by criminal cartels (aka Foreign Terrorist Organizations) and a huge NATIONAL SECURITY RISK,' Hegseth wrote. He added that 'it's COMMON SENSE' that 'violence & destruction against federal agencies & federal facilities will NOT be tolerated.' Trump himself has pushed baseless conspiracies about the unrest, claiming the 'Radical Left protests' are being carried out by 'paid troublemakers' while taking aim at California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for being 'unable to to [sic] handle the task' of keeping the peace.

Gainesville Fire Department to stage fake fire during training exercise on Monday
Gainesville residents may notice emergency vehicles and what appears to be smoke near the downtown area on Monday, but don't fret. It's just a training exercise. The Gainesville Fire Department will conduct field training on Monday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will simulate a commercial fire near downtown Gainesville. The department says the smoke will be artificial, and there will be no fire present. They ask that you do not call 911 regarding this incident. A single lane of College Avenue may be closed during the planned time period.
