Bafana Bafana's squad for the CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) is an exciting mix of experienced players and emerging talent.
One particularly intriguing detail is that nearly half of the selected players are currently free agents. Out of the 25 players chosen, 12 don't have contracts, featuring standout names like Zakhele Lepasa, Keagan Dolly, and Thabiso Kutumela.
Also making waves in the lineup are Sundowns midfielder Neo Maema and his impressive teammates Terrence Mashego and Ntando Nkozi.
This unique situation will offer these players a brilliant chance to shine on a continental stage, potentially securing new contracts while proudly representing their nation.
With the CHAN tournament focusing solely on players active in their home leagues, it's a stern test for many footballing nations, including Bafana Bafana as they gear up for a thrilling challenge in Group C. They'll be up against hosts Uganda, alongside Algeria, Niger, and Guinea—what an exhilarating lineup! Scheduled from August 2 to 30, the tournament will be held across the vibrant host nations of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
SAFA's Technical Committee has appointed Molefi Ntseki as the head coach of the CHAN team, and he is brimming with enthusiasm.
'We have assembled a team that will represent South Africa in the CHAN tournament,' he expressed confidently.
'We've carefully selected players who embarked on this journey with us. We can't wait for the tournament and are determined to give our all.
"A big thank you to the clubs and coaches who made it possible for our players to join the CHAN squad' The excitement is building as the team started to train in Johannesburg on Friday before flying out to Uganda on August 3.
They'll kick off their tournament against Algeria on August 8 at the iconic Mandela National Stadium in Kampala. As a fantastic start, the tournament's opening match will see co-host Tanzania take on Burkina Faso in Dar es Salaam—let's get ready for some amazing football action

Rayners could lead Sundowns' charge for long awaited Caf glory

Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Mamelodi Sundowns will begin their MTN8 journey with a home fixture against Richards Bay FC at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday evening (18:00 kick-off), as they look to end a surprisingly long wait for domestic cup success. While the Tshwane giants have continued to assert themselves as kings of the Betway Premiership—securing a seventh successive league title—they've found cup competitions less forgiving in recent seasons. Their hunger to conquer African football has grown, but at home, they've had to settle for near misses. That's why lifting the MTN8 is expected to feature high on their to-do list this season. Their last domestic triumph came in this very competition in 2021/22, and by their high standards, that feels like a drought. The Brazilians bowed out in disappointing fashion in last year's MTN8, falling to Stellenbosch FC in both legs of the semi-final by a 1-0 scoreline. Since winning the MTN8 in 2021/22, however, they've added to their continental pedigree by winning the inaugural African Football League and retaining their league crown with relative ease. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading The last time they reached a domestic final was their 2-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup of the 2023/24 season—another reminder that despite their league dominance, cup glory continues to elude them. Heading into his first full season in charge, head coach Miguel Cardoso will be eager to make an early statement by guiding the Chloorkop-based side to MTN8 glory. Much of that ambition will rest on the shoulders of in-form striker Iqraam Rayners. The Bafana Bafana forward made a seamless transition into the Sundowns setup after joining from Stellenbosch FC, and was one of the standout performers last season. Between league and cup competitions, Rayners bagged 24 goals and chipped in with nine assists. Alongside Brazilian star Lucas Ribeiro Costa, the pair gave opposing defences plenty to think about. Despite his prolific form, Rayners was surprisingly overlooked for the Premier Soccer League's Footballer of the Season award—a snub that didn't sit well with many observers. Still, the 29-year-old remains upbeat and focused. 'A lot of people did not believe in me, but I obviously believe in myself and the coaches and the players,' Rayners told the club's podcast. 'My first season I was happy to be at the club and doing my best.' While disappointed after seeing the list of nominees, Rayners took it in stride. 'I was a bit disappointed because I had a good season last season with a good team and good players and coaches believed in me. I was disappointed when I saw the players that were nominated.' With talk swirling around Ribeiro's potential departure, the timing could be right for Rayners to further stake his claim as a key figure for both Sundowns and Bafana Bafana. The upcoming MTN8 could serve as his personal and team platform to deliver silverware and silence any lingering doubt. More than that, the tournament serves as a pre-season springboard—an opportunity to kickstart the campaign in fine fashion and dominate not only the league but every front.

Hunt embraces youth-first approach in Durban City's top-flight debut

Gavin Hunt, standing alongside club owner Farook Kadodia, believes Durban City's youth-driven approach can unearth future Bafana Bafana stars. Photo: Jehran Naidoo Independent Media Image: Jehran Naidoo Independent Media Durban City head coach Gavin Hunt has thrown his weight behind the youth revolution currently sweeping through the Betway Premiership — and believes the shift will benefit South African football for years to come. The veteran coach will lead newly promoted Durban City in their first-ever top-flight campaign, with survival the immediate priority. But Hunt's blueprint goes beyond staying up — it's about building a team with long-term intent. City's squad features a blend of seasoned professionals and emerging talent, though the emphasis is clearly on youth. Hunt, renowned for his work with young players in previous roles, has doubled down on that approach in KwaZulu-Natal. Daine Klate has taken up the role of coach of the DDC team. He is expected to work closely with Gavin Hunt as they aim to make the transition of players to the senior team seamless. Meanwhile, the Durban team announced the signing of former Cape Town City FC goalkeeper Darren… — The Playbook (@PlaybookAfrica) July 28, 2025 Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ 'If you look at the PSL as a whole, the majority of clubs are changing the course of how they want to do things — they're going with a bit more youth,' Hunt told the media. 'I've always done it, but now you see a club like AmaZulu doing the same — they've gone in that direction with players who have speed and explosiveness. You'll see the same at Durban City, with younger squads becoming the norm for one reason or another.' 'You must never be scared to play young players because they'll always improve. We need the experience of older players, of course, but youth is the way to go.' Hunt believes KwaZulu-Natal has always been a hotbed of footballing talent, and now is the time to dig even deeper. 'Durban has always had an abundance of talent from way back, and players from this area have gone on to do big things. Maybe we need to unearth even more by doing what we're doing now.' AmaZulu assistant coach Siboniso Vilakazi welcomed Hunt's arrival in the province, saying it could create a positive ripple effect for youth development across KwaZulu-Natal. 'Our province is one of the richest in terms of talent,' said Vilakazi. 'When you have coaches who understand development and trust youngsters like Hunt, then the province will benefit a lot. 'And not just the province, but the national team as well — because if there's a filtration of good players at the highest level, then Bafana Bafana benefits. We've seen it in the past with the likes of Siyabonga Nomvethe and Sibusiso Zuma.' Durban City have yet to play a minute of Premiership football, but under Gavin Hunt, they already have an identity: youthful, fearless, and focused. The next generation has a platform — and the province is watching.

Coetzé claims shock gold in 100m backstroke with record-breaking finish

Pieter Coetzé won the men's 100m backstroke final at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore with a new African record time of 51.85 seconds on Tuesday. Photo: Backpagepix The 21-year-old Tuks student clocked a blistering 51.85 seconds — dipping under 52 seconds for the second time in just two weeks — to out-touch Olympic champion Thomas Ceccon of Italy, who took silver in 51.90, and France's Yohann Ndoye-Brouard, who claimed bronze in 51.95. Pieter Coetzé stormed to a surprise gold medal in the men's 100m backstroke final at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore on Monday, breaking his own South African and African record for the third time in rapid succession. Coetzé had arrived in Singapore carrying the world lead, courtesy of his 51.99 performance at the World Student Games in Germany last week — a swim that also set African and World Student Games records, and made him only the eighth man in history to break the 52-second barrier in the event. Despite this form, the South African was not seen as a favourite for the title in a stacked final field. He had qualified third-fastest (52.29) behind Hungary's Hubert Kós (52.21) and Russia's Kliment Kolesnikov, who posted a stunning 51.26 in the semis. In the final, the leading swimmers were level with 25 metres to go, before Coetzé unleashed a devastating late surge, kicking strongly in the final 10 metres to touch first in a remarkably close finish, with all three medallists under 52 seconds. Meanwhile, fellow South African Chris Smith booked his place in the men's 50m breaststroke final with a strong swim in the semi-finals. He finished second in his heat in a time of 26.77 seconds, behind Koen de Groot of the Netherlands. The final is scheduled for Wednesday.
