Joel Edgerton on Directing Harrison Ford in New Glenmorangie Whisky Ad Campaign, Getting Him to Wear a Kilt and Embrace Being an ‘Older Dude': ‘Let's Not Try and Hide It' (EXCLUSIVE)
Joel Edgerton has directed two feature films, 'The Gift' and 'Boy Erased,' but he is now making his advertising directorial debut with Glenmorangie Scotch Whisky's new ad campaign starring Harrison Ford.
The legendary actor plays himself as he travels to Andross Castle in Scotland to film the campaign. After insisting on not doing any sort of action movie-like stunts, Ford is seen meditating, riding a bike and sipping whisky in front of a cozy fire. At one point, he even slips into a kilt.

The campaign, titled 'Once Upon a Time in Scotland' and consisting of several video spots, plays into Ford's reputation of being a bit of a curmudgeon. 'I'd watched a lot of his interviews, and I realized that true or false, there's a persona of Harrison's that is quite gruff and, you know, grumpy, but he's a bit like an avocado,' Edgerton tells me. 'He's rock solid on the outside but he's very soft in the middle. He has an emotional softness and a sensitivity and a humanity that he then covers with this sort of prickly outside.'
This Q&A with Edgerton has been edited for length and clarity.
What's your favorite Harrison Ford movie?
That's very hard. If you ask 12-year-old Joel, it would be 'Indiana Jones.' But as I grew up, I think 'The Fugitive' is one of the most excellent thrillers made of all time. He does the empathetic every man. Weirdly, my other obsession in the '80s were Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. But you never thought those guys wouldn't get through the mess. You always assume there's no way they're going to lose but I love that Harrison made us feel like he didn't know the answer. He had to work it out, and I think that's why we all connected with him. I will say Harrison definitely is one of my heroes. There is a photo that exists somewhere of me with a brown, sort of fedora on my head and a brown sort of plastic leather jacket that I found somewhere. And I rubbed dirt on my face to look like stubble. I am aware that you got to be careful about meeting your heroes. I did wonder, 'Is Harrison best left as a hero in my mind?' There's a certain actor in Hollywood who said, 'Never meet your heroes unless they're Harrison Ford' and he was fucking right, man. He was such a legend in person as much as he lives as a legend in my mind.
What was it like meeting him for the first time?
We had lunch. I was with this gang when he got there. While he was shaking my hand, he said, 'I heard they want me to ride a horse and fly a plane, and I'm not doing any of that.' I felt good because that's exactly what the first spot was going to be about — him going, 'I don't want to do what they want me to do.' We hit it off and by the end of the meeting, he was like, 'I'll do whatever you want me to do.'
What was it like telling Harrison Ford to do another take on something?
He was awesome. We shot a lot in three days. We shot a lot of material, like 20 to 30 minutes of him doing things. But I was terrified because most campaigns you shoot are a 60-second spot in two days. We were doing four separate stories each day. I thought I was going to have a heart attack before I even got there. But he was often ready before the camera was ready. He would change in a cupboard if he needed to.
How many kilts did he try on before you found the right one?
We had a beautiful kilt made. When I was younger, I never thought I'd ever have lunch with Harrison so I certainly could never have imagined that one day I'd be working with Harrison Ford and that these words were going to come out of my mouth, 'Harrison, can I get you to wear a kilt?'
He seems to have bed head throughout the campaign. Was that on purpose?
One of the great things for me is I didn't come from a world of advertising and I've never worked in that world before, I only know about being the receiver of so many ads throughout my entire life. Campaigns are usually about beautification and wish fulfillment, and we often then get actors or celebrities, and we try and age them down or we make them more beautiful. There's an aspect to this campaign that is super subtle, which I think is about embracing who you are and acknowledging your fears, whether you're scared you're not cool enough or you're an older person now and you just want to avoid certain things. I was like, 'Harrison is an older dude. Let's not try and hide it.' And by the way, we didn't have enough time to spend on all that crap. But, yeah, be who you are. We should love everybody for who they are, whatever their age, shape, whether their hair is tussled or not.
How much whisky was being consumed while you were shooting?
It is important to know your product. We had a couple of amazing tastings with Dr. Bill Lumsden, who creates the whisky. We had a tasting of the full gamut, but we didn't let it get too much in the way of shooting. It is important to relax at the end of the day, and what a great way to do it. They gifted Harrison, myself and all the crew and team special bottles of whisky. I think Harrison got one of the oldest bottles ever — from the year I was born.
I have to ask you about voicing Policeman on 'Bluey.' How did that come about?
'Bluey' has been in my life since my niece became obsessed with it, and then, because I'm an actor and I'm Australian, and those guys operate out here, they asked me to do a voice. Now my kids are 'Bluey'-obsessed so it gives me a lot of credibility. But also they hear your voice but they can't quite put it together. I walk around bragging it's me, but they're like, 'No, it's not.'

UFC 316: The face of women's MMA is being debated again — but is that even a thing?
The first true face of women's MMA might've been its last. That was of course Ronda Rousey, who crashed the ol' boy's party a dozen years ago by rolling a red carpet straight into the Octagon. She brought sophisticated media outlets up close to the sport that wouldn't have touched it with tongs before her arrival. When she broke news of her fight with Holly Holm, she did so on Good Morning America. It was Holm, of course, who ruined it all by knocking out Rousey at UFC 193. And it was Amanda Nunes who made damn sure Rousey would never come back after UFC 207. Advertisement Cut forward nearly nine years to UFC 316 and it feels like we're still wondering who the next face of women's MMA will be. This weekend Kayla Harrison challenges Julianna Peña for the women's bantamweight title, that glam accessory that once-upon-a-time carried so much weight. The two have been arguing over who will become the next face of women's MMA, which feels like it should be a big deal. Problem is, they seem to be the only people arguing about it. Fans aren't. Media isn't. The broader national media doesn't even know it's happening. It's doubtful that Ring Magazine, the 'Bible of Boxing,' will put the winner on its next cover as it did Rousey, or that Clay Travis will insist Harrison, should she win, fight Gervonta Davis in her next bout, as he insisted that Rousey should fight Floyd Mayweather. Saturday's fight seems to be a kind of Amanda Nunes sweepstakes more than anything else, which these days is stakes enough. The winner will almost certainly get to fight the consensus women's GOAT, who has vowed to come back after retiring in 2023. Before that happens, Nunes will get inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in a ceremony that takes place during International Fight Week later this month. Advertisement It's a win-win for the UFC. Nunes' only loss in the past decade came against Peña at UFC 269, a defeat she avenged less than a year later. That trilogy seems to be circled in sacred blood on Peña's bucket list. She has been vying for that chance for a long, long time. And should Harrison win, you have perhaps one of the most anticipated women's title fights of the past 10 years, given that both Harrison and Nunes are tanks with an intwined backstory dating to their days training together at ATT. One way or another, there's a big fight hanging in the balance of UFC 316, even if it has nothing to do with unveiling the next face of women's MMA. Maybe the trouble is that we've set the bar too high on this concept in the first place. When Rousey came in, she made everything that followed possible. In that way, she began her UFC career as God, which, you have to admit, is a super tough act to follow. Her presence brought it all into being. Nobody can replicate that kind of flex. It helped that she treated whoever the UFC booked her against like crash test dummies, submitting most of them in the opening seconds with savage armbars. She came in and ruled what was traditionally a man's game from the start. That's why young girls were crying when they met her wherever she went. UFC is still searching for its next Ronda Rousey. The way she left the sport turned people against her, but that initial boom holds on as an impossible standard. Advertisement We've seen a lot of great fighters come and go in her stead. There have been moments where, if you were to squint, it looked like we might be looking at the 'next' one. Rose Namajunas was designated the next Ronda Rousey as far back as her appearances on "The Ultimate Fighter" in 2014. She's had her moments. Big moments. So has Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Weili Zhang, Valentina Shevchenko, as well as Holly Holm, Miesha Tate and Nunes herself. They've all had great careers, and some of them are still going strong. Including Nunes. Thing is, as dominant as she's been, she never wanted to embrace being the face of the sport. She was happy to win titles in two weight classes and to beat the living hell out of people, but not all the rest that comes with it. When she abruptly retired after beating Irene Aldana at UFC 289, it came with a few sad trumpet noises from the peanut gallery, but next to no real fanfare, other than the requisite tributes. Yet if she can solidify her standing as the women's GOAT by coming back and beating either Peña or Harrison? She'll take that. Really, that's all that matters. The closest thing to a 'superstar' in the making right now in the women's ranks might be the young Dakota Ditcheva, who's blowing up everyone she faces in the PFL. She's the nearest thing to the 'R' word we've seen in a while, yet it would be unfair to launch her into the sun like that, either. Which is fine. On Saturday night, Peña's the champion, and Harrison is the two-time Olympic gold medalist coming to take her belt. Take all comparisons away, and there's nothing wrong with simply being the best in women's MMA. From there, the public will see what it wants to.

Samuel L. Jackson in talks to star in Taylor Sheridan series

Jackson reportedly is in talks to star in a new series created by writer, director and producer Taylor Sheridan. Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline reported the news Thursday. Jackson's character is expected to be introduced in Season 3 of Sheridan's Sylvester Stallone-led gangster drama, Tulsa King, before he gets his own spin-off, set in New Orleans. David Erickson -- whose credits include Mayor of Kingstown and Tulsa King -- is onboard as show-runner. Production on Season 3 of Tulsa King is now underway.

Blessed be the Emmys rulebook, but it needs some serious updating. With 'The Handmaid's Tale' having taken its final bow, Hulu has confirmed its official Emmy submissions for the critically acclaimed drama, with one entry in particular already causing waves. Bledel won the Emmy for guest in 2017, and garnered two additional noms in the same category in 2020 and 2021. However, in 2018, after appearing in seven of the 13 episodes for a season, she was ineligible to compete as a guest; she was submitted and eventually nominated for supporting drama actress. The one-year recognition for her character, Ofglen, appears to fall outside the bounds of eligibility, but the streamer is hopeful the TV Academy will consider her circumstances. Insiders say Hulu expects the TV Academy to reclassify Bledel's submission to supporting drama actress before ballots are opened on June 12. But as of now, no decision has been issued. The rule aims to clarify what defines a 'guest' star. According to the new guidelines, any actor previously nominated in a lead or supporting role for a series can no longer be considered a guest, regardless of how briefly they appear in the series' new season. The policy has already drawn industry-wide criticism and confusion. Meryl Streep, for instance, was ruled ineligible for guest consideration for her turn in Hulu's 'Only Murders in the Building' — despite appearing in just four episodes — and will instead compete in the supporting comedy actress category due to her previous nom. Meanwhile, Paul Rudd, playing a new character in the same series, was nearly eligible as a guest but was in one episode too many, exposing inconsistencies with the changes. The guidelines have created more ambiguity than clarity. There should be a fundamental difference between a major series lead attempting to go guest and a long-time supporting player who has only occasionally appeared in a new season. Industry voices argue that the change unfairly penalizes performers with limited screen time who have previously been recognized — especially when those appearances are few and far between. Some believe this growing backlash will prompt the Emmys to consider revisions ahead of future cycles. Despite the rule conflict, 'The Handmaid's Tale' still remains a formidable force in this year's Emmy race. The drama, which concluded its six-season run on Monday, has garnered 76 nominations and 15 wins over its lifetime — including a historic outstanding drama series win in its first season, the first ever for a streaming platform. This year, Hulu submitted 36 entries for the show across both Primetime and Creative Arts categories. Notable acting entries include Elisabeth Moss for lead actress and for helming the penultimate episode, 'Execution,' which is somewhat surprising considering long-running shows often reserve their final episodes for consideration. However, the episode that sees many favorite characters' shocking deaths is more visually striking, partnered with June screaming, 'Don't let the bastards grind you down' as she's being hanged. In addition, Bradley Whitford, Max Minghella, and O-T Fagbenle will vie in the supporting actor race, while Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, and Ann Dowd will seek love in supporting actress. Guest actress submissions beyond Bledel include Emmy winners Cherry Jones (episode 602) and D'Arcy Carden (episode 608).
