Influencer breaks spine attempting viral social media challenge

News.com.au2 days ago
A Russian influencer broke her spine while attempting the viral Nicki Minaj stiletto challenge that has become popular on TikTok.
Mariana Barutkina, 32, an aspiring content creator with just over 1200 followers on Instagram, tried the Super Bass singer-inspired trend shortly after giving birth.
However, it didn't go as expected, and she ended up back in the doctor's office after a frightening fall from her kitchen counter.
A clip shared on Instagram by the new mum shows her attempting a one-foot squat in heels on a baby formula container, balanced on a sauce pot atop a marble-topped kitchen island.
The pot slips, causing the self-described 'newbie mommy blogger' to fall backwards off the counter and onto the ground behind her, which caused her serious injuries.
'I decided to start blogging, the first content shoot – and here I am leaving the doctor diagnosed with 'Th9 compression bending uncomplicated fracture of the body',' she wrote in the caption of the video, which now has over one million views.
'The irony? Karma? Or just life, which always tests our strength at the most unexpected moment.'
Ms Barutkina was trying out the trending 'Nicki Minaj High School Challenge', where people attempt to mimic the rapper's famous pose from her 2013 music video for High School featuring Lil Wayne.
Many of those who brave the challenge add levels of difficulty in bids to go viral, including balancing in heels on a variety of objects, like stacked dumbbells, bottles of wine, and even traffic cones.
It seems the new mum is taking the accident in her stride as it gave her the fame she always wanted.
'Because of one video, which was unsuccessfully filmed, I woke up a popular person,' she wrote in a follow-up post.
'More than 50 people sent me my reel from different publications today. Thank you for your popularity, for your concerns and for your comments.
'I'm doing great, following the guidelines and now living in 'star' status.'
It appears she gained just 500 followers from the ordeal.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner's mother breaks silence over son's tragic death

Malcolm-Jamal Warner's mother has spoken publicly for the first time since her son's tragic death. The Cosby Show star, 54, died on 20 July after drowning during a family holiday in Costa Rica and authorities reported he was caught in a strong current while swimming on a beach in Limón. His mum Pamela Warner has now spoken about how she is dealing with his passing with a sense of peace and resilience – declaring: 'For those of you who are at a loss, pained by the suddenness of his departure, ache for his presence or just to hear his voice one more time, to see his beatific smile one more time, be comforted that he was at peace and more importantly, he did not suffer.' Pamela made her statement in a heartfelt Instagram post. Initial reports suggested malcolm's eight-year-old daughter was with him in the water where he died but was quickly pulled out. But the Judicial Investigation Agency of Costa Rica later clarified she had been ashore at the time of the tragedy. Despite efforts by bystanders and the Costa Rican Red Cross, Malcolm-Jamal was pronounced dead at the scene. No lifeguards were present, and officials noted the drowning occurred very rapidly. His official cause of death was listed as asphyxiation by submersion. In her statement, Pamela also reflected on the symbolism of water in her son's life and death, writing: 'Malcolm was birthed through water and transitioned through water. This was his time. 'His mission on earth had been completed.' She also honoured Malcolm-Jamal's legacy, saying he left 'an indelible mark on the world and on countless hearts' and that 'all who met him, however briefly, were better for the encounter.' Pamela described her son as a 'kind, loving man with a huge heart for humanity,' committed to helping others recognise their 'inner strength' and potential for transformation. She added: 'This was his latest mission and work, transformation, in order for you to be fully present in your life.' Pamela also praised Malcolm's talents as an actor, musician, teacher, coach and business partner, noting his Grammy nominations and win. She said: 'Hold close to whatever part of Malcolm's life that touched yours. 'In keeping it near, you keep his spirit alive – nourishing you with the peace, love, joy and light that embodied Malcolm-Jamal Warner.'

Katy Perry reveals bruises and scrapes sustained on her Lifetimes tour

Katy Perry has revealed the bruises and scrapes she has sustained while performing on her Lifetimes tour. In an unfiltered glimpse into the physical toll of life on the road, the singer, 40, posted a series of photos on Instagram, including a close-up of her knees covered in fresh wounds as she relaxed in a tub. Alongside the images, she shared a text exchange with her friend Lauren Glucksman, explaining the injury. Katy said: 'It was a slide on my knees mome(nt) that usually makes them go ahhh and it just made me go arghh.' Lauren responded: 'And just like that she's in her 40s.' Dark Horse singer Katy's injuries are the latest setback during her ongoing world tour. Last month, she narrowly avoided a serious accident when a flying prop malfunctioned during her show in San Francisco. Video footage showed her steadying herself quickly and continuing her performance with professionalism. A source told Page Six: 'She paused slightly but then kept singing, almost never missing a beat.' Alongside the new candid images of the physical challenges she's endured, Katy also offered a rare view of her private family life, sharing snapshots of her daughter Daisy Dove Bloom, whom she has with her ex-partner Orlando Bloom. One photograph showed the toddler, typically shielded from public view, peering out from a high-rise window with her hands and face pressed against the glass. Another captured Daisy putting on a puppet show for her mother, featuring a lion. Katy concluded her post with the caption: 'We continue to be on tour.' Known for hits such as Teenage Dream, Katy rose to fame in the late 2000s and has sold millions of albums worldwide and earned multiple Grammy nominations. Beyond music, she has served as a judge on American Idol and balances her career with motherhood, sharing a daughter with actor Orlando Bloom. She and the A-lister, 48, announced their split in early 2023 after several years together. The couple had been engaged but decided to part ways amicably while continuing to co-parent their child.

Brandon Blackstock's final photograph shows him smiling alongside pregnant daughter

Brandon Blackstock's final photograph shows him smiling alongside his pregnant daughter Savannah Lee. The 48-year-old talent manager, who lived in Montana, died last month following a three-year battle with cancer, leaving his singer wife Kelly Clarkson devastated. Now, in what is believed to be the final photograph taken of him before his death, Brandon has been revealed to have appeared happy before his passing. His daughter captioned the snap by saying she was 'back home to the mountains and my daddy'. A statement announcing Brandon's death said he had been diagnosed with melanoma and had recently entered hospice care before 'passing away peacefully' surrounded by family. On 20 July, Savannah, 23, posted what is thought to be the final image of him on Facebook. In it, both she and Brandon wore casual black clothing and smiled for the camera. Brandon rested one arm around his daughter's shoulders while propping one leg on a picnic bench, wearing a baseball cap and Ugg boots. Savannah, who is expecting her second child, posed with one hand in her pocket, leaning into her father. A few weeks earlier, Savannah – who has a three-year-old son – announced on Instagram she was pregnant again. She said: 'My little girl will be making her arrival at the beginning of January. 'This journey has been so special full of peace, excitement, and so much grace.' She also thanked God for being 'so faithful' and said: 'His kindness in this season has left (us) in awe.' Brandon shared Savannah and her brother Seth Blackstock with his first wife, Melissa Ashworth, whom he married in 2001 and divorced in 2012. He was later married to Kelly Clarkson from 2013 to 2022, with whom he had two children – daughter River, 11, and son Remington, nine. A spokesperson said about his death: 'It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. 'He bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time.' The day before Brandon's death, Kelly, 43, announced she was cancelling the remaining August dates of her Las Vegas residency, saying she needed to be 'fully present' for their children as her ex-husband was 'ill'. The former couple's last red carpet appearance together was in January 2020 at the Critics' Choice Awards. Clarkson filed for divorce five months later.
