The strongest classical tournament I have won: Keymer

Vincent Keymer was a wunderkind in German chess and was one destined for greatness and the 20-year-old showed why he is rated so highly with a flawless performance in the Quantbox Chennai Grandmasters tournament here.
Keymer drew a topsy-turvy eighth round match against Dutchman Jorden van Foreest on Thursday to claim the title with a game to spare. The icing on the cake was that he broke into the top 10 of the FIDE live ratings for the first time after his seventh-round win over Awonder Liang.
Keymer took up chess at the age of five and was taught the rules by his parents. At 11, he was winning tournaments and was called exceptional by the legendary Garry Kasparov in 2016 and the following year he became a Grandmaster. Keymer hasn't looked back since.
Keymer provided a glimpse of his capabilities when he won the Weissenhaus Freestyle Chess Grand Slam against a world-class field on home turf early in the year. He scored wins over Alireza Firouzja, Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana in the final three knockout games to achieve a memorable triumph.
Asked where he rated the victory in Chennai, a delighted Keymer said: 'It means a lot. Yeah, it's very important, I think it's the strongest classical tournament I have ever won, and also winning it with one round to go and quite some distance is really, really nice.'
Yet, he isn't celebrating already. 'I'm just gonna try to not ruin my performance tomorrow, and then I can really call it a very nice tournament, and yeah, that will really leave a good feeling for the upcoming events,' he added.
The encounter against van Foreest was probably his sternest test in the tournament here and he managed to come through unscathed and is happy about it. Having broken into the top 10, Keymer wants to stay put.

Premier League: What To Watch Out For As World's Most Popular Football League Begins Today

Published By : Last Updated: Even by Premier League standards, spending by clubs this season has been substantial. Nearly $3 billion has been spent on players since the end of last season. The 2025-26 Premier League season kicks off on Friday with defending champions Liverpool hosting Bournemouth at Anfield. Here's what to know ahead of the new campaign in the world's most popular football league: Emotions high at Liverpool Liverpool aims to retain the top-flight title for the first time since the mid-1980s, against the backdrop of a tragic event. Friday evening is sure to be emotional as Anfield hosts a competitive match for the first time since the death of Diogo Jota, who played for Liverpool for the past five seasons. Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, were killed in a car accident in Spain last month. The club is still mourning Jota's loss, and it remains uncertain how the players will be affected this season. 'The first time we arrive for a session, the first time we play a game, the first time after 20 minutes (Jota wore No. 20) they sing his song — all these things are difficult," Liverpool manager Arne Slot said. Pep Guardiola has never gone two seasons without winning a league title. This could be one of the Manchester City manager's motivations as the former champions look to bounce back from finishing third last season, after winning the previous four Premier League titles. City enters another season with more than 100 charges hanging over the club after being accused of financial misconduct by the Premier League in 2023. An independent commission heard the case between September and December last year, but no verdict has yet been reached. City has always denied any wrongdoing. Arsenal finally has a new striker Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta faced the same question every week last season: When are you going to sign a striker? He now has one in Viktor Gyokeres, a revelation at Sporting Lisbon where he scored 97 goals in 102 games. With Arsenal also signing an elite holding midfielder in Martin Zubimendi, expectations will be high for Arteta to deliver the club's first league title since 2004 after three straight runner-up finishes. The pressure is also on Gyokeres to make a difference up front. The 27-year-old Sweden striker has never played at such a level before and is getting a second chance at the Premier League after failing to break through at Brighton. Spending on players has been heavy Even by Premier League standards, spending by clubs this season has been substantial. Nearly $3 billion has been spent on players since the end of last season — and there are still over two weeks left in the summer transfer window. Liverpool has been the biggest spender, with an outlay of around $350 million on players like German playmaker Florian Wirtz, French striker Hugo Ekitike, and full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. That figure could yet increase if Liverpool signs unsettled Newcastle striker Alexander Isak in the coming days. Chelsea has spent around $330 million, bringing in two new strikers in Joao Pedro and Liam Delap. Manchester United, whose attack has been reshaped with the arrivals of Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Bryan Mbeumo, and Arsenal have both spent around $260 million on players. Will all the promoted teams get relegated again? It's never been harder to stay in the Premier League after being promoted from the Championship. In the past two seasons, all three clubs that have come up have been relegated the following year. Over to you, Leeds, Burnley, and Sunderland. Sunderland's return to the top-flight is arguably the most intriguing. The northeast team was last in the Premier League in 2017 and has since been the subject of a Netflix documentary, Sunderland 'Til I Die, which chronicled its troubles in the lower leagues. view comments Location : London, United Kingdom (UK) First Published: August 15, 2025, 16:56 IST News sports Premier League: What To Watch Out For As World's Most Popular Football League Begins Today Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Bayern Munich Transfer Saga "Tough For Nick Woltemade": Stuttgart Captain Ahead Of German Super Cup

Undoubtedly one of the highest-rated attacking talents in Germany, Stuttgart forward Nick Woltemade finds himself in a tough position where he needs to focus on the task at hand -- the German Super Cup against Bayern Munich -- despite the transfer talks linking him with a move to Saturday's opponents. Woltemade has made up his mind, which is a move to Bayern before the summer transfer window ends, but Stuttgart and Bayern are far from reaching a conclusion on the transfer fee for the 23-year-old. Stuttgart captain, Atakan Karazor, however, is standing by Woltemade to deliver on the field as his team takes on German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich at home. Karazor, during a chat with the media ahead of the Super Cup showdown, admitted that the speculations of Woltemade's transfer to Bayern have entered the Stuttgart dressing room, but the strong mindset of his teammates ensures that they put more focus on the performances on the pitch than the transfer speculations. "I'm really happy that we in the team don't get disturbed by things like this. It's a very good way of thinking and mindset of the team. Of course, we hear things like this," Karazor said during the media conference on Thursday. "Also, it's international and also on the nationals. Also in Germany, you can hear of these things, of course. I mean, you can see it everywhere on the newspaper. Or maybe if you go on Instagram or something, you can see it everywhere. But as I told you, the mindset of the team is very good. We don't let us disturbed by things like this," he added. Karazor has a bigger responsibility on his shoulders against Bayern in the German Super Cup, especially in terms of helping Woltemade get the best out of him, against a team that he will potentially join in the coming days. The German defender admitted that times like these are tough for Woltemade but he has faith in him to rise above the chatter and make his performance do the talk. "I have a feeling that Nick is also very strong in times like this. Of course, you don't know Nick like me. Nick is not just a great player. He's a very, very nice guy. I think the whole team knows Nick for his qualities, but also for how he is a human being. And he's a great guy. And I think maybe it's tough for Nick in situations like this. But we as a team, we need to help Nick in situations. And if we play on Saturday for our team, of course, we will stand with Nic," he said. Woltemade's Stuttgart teammates have vowed to stand by him on the pitch, help him get that elusive goal that probably gets the team another silverware. "All the time, we try to protect him. And we try to give him the assist for his goal."
