Times of Oman01-06-2025
Muscat: Omani rally driver Abdullah Al Zubair topped the N group in Merc 2 in Jordan International rally which was a strong and more than impressive result, achieving fifth place in the overall rally standings in his Subaru Impreza, followed directly by his teammate Zakaria Al Amri.
The rally, which consisted of 12 stages, between mountainous and near the Dead Sea, witnessed success in terms of organization and participation, as 22 cars participated in various categories.
Champion Abdullah Al-Rawahy topped the morning stages on Friday in Til Hilali, Karamah, and Baptism, but he lost the title against Nasser Al Attiyah meanwhile Abdullah Al-Zubair and his navigator Taha Soomar continued to dominate the Merc 2 group despite the attempts of the rest of the competitors to catch him, especially his direct competitor Zakaria Al-Amri and his navigator Mohammed Al-Mazrui and other local competitors from Jordan and Lebanon. Nevertheless, Al-Amri still leads the category by 9 points over Al-Zubair, who aspires to win the title this year.
Abdullah Al Zubair secured the lead in his group from the day one and took it easy on himself on the second day, slowing down after securing a significant lead over the competitor chasing him. Al Amri, meanwhile, had a great race but encountered some problems with his car on the day one, which he was able to recover on the following day and gain good times.
The second day of the rally, which took place in Panorama, Suwayma and Wadi Nar, in the Merc 2 group witnessed competition between colleagues Abdullah Al-Zubair and Zakaria Al-Amri to seize the category title, but Al-Zubair presented a balanced and exceptional performance and implemented a clear strategy to maintain the difference between him and the rest, he was able to decide the matter in advance during the first day's competition, and his strong and fast time in the group gave him the lead in the Jordan International Rally category, and he secured 30 points in the category in the Middle East Rally Championship after concluding his fourth round in Jordan, towards competing for the lead.
The winner of the first place in the in (N) category, Abdullah Al Zubair, with his navigator Taha Soomar, said that the rally was special in terms of the competition, which was fierce in many stages, but thank God I outperformed many of the competitors who had stronger cars and in a larger category than my category, and we succeeded in achieving the goal, which was to win first place in the category to reduce the lead in the group with my colleague Zakaria Al Amri, and I am happy with this, I also hope that private sector companies will support the competitors who achieve international successes in the name of the Sultanate, especially since these sports are very expensive. I thank everyone who stood behind us in this rally and championship, the supporters, Taha Soomar's my assistants, and the technical team for the great job, it is worth mentioning that many of those witnessed and drivers at the rally asked Al Zubair to participate next year with an R5 category car, as he was one of the fastest drivers in the rally.
For his part, competitor Zakaria Al Amri said that the rally was difficult and arduous and he faced some problems in some stages, but he was able to overcome them and and recover and presented an ideal race despite the fierce competition, rough stages and hot weather.
He added, 'Thank God, we are still at the top of the Merc 2 group and we will try to maintain this lead in the upcoming rallies and win the category. I thank my navigator Mohammed Al Mazrui for all the support, as well as the audience who came to support us in this rally in Jordan from Oman.'

RX Sport raises the bar for Arab motorsport on the international stage

DUBAI: Wednesday, August 13: Dubai-based RX Sport is a team led by veteran Emirati champion Rashid Al-Ketbi and is now raising the bar for motorsport on the international stage. It was founded just one month before the 2023 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. After a career full of his own personal achievements, Al-Ketbi decided to use his experience and passion to support and develop Arab talent, especially after he was injured during a round of the FIA European Rally Championship. This passion led the team to compete in the 2024 Dakar Rally, the world's toughest rally, only a few months after its debut in Abu Dhabi. In their second appearance at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, the team won the T4 category, solidifying their strong presence. RX Sport's ambitions weren't limited to cross-country and Baja World Cup races. The team has also become a platform for celebrating Arab champions and has welcomed notable names like Yahya Al-Helei and his son Mansour, as well as Sheikh Khalid Al-Qassimi for the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. While many racing teams exist in the UAE, they often operate on a local scale. This is where RX Sport stands out: it is the first Emirati team to compete internationally in cross-country and Baja rallies. The team's ambition extends beyond just supporting drivers. It works hard to empower Arab navigators, most notably Khalid Al-Kindi, a step that affirms its comprehensive commitment to elevating motorsport in the region. Omani rally star Hamad Al-Wahaibi joined RX Sport to compete in the FIA World Baja Cup this season. Al-Wahaibi believes the development of the sport in the region begins with supporting Arab teams, which is why he chose to continue his career under the banner of an Arab team striving for the top. Al-Wahaibi is joined by Emirati navigator Khalid Al-Kindi on some events, resulting in strong performances that have placed them in contention for the SSV title. The pair still have more events this season, as they prepare for next year's racing programme with RX Sport. Rashid Al-Ketbi shared his journey. He said: "After my accident in the European Championship, which resulted in a broken back, I couldn't stay away from motorsport, a sport that entered my mind and heart in 1992. That's where the idea to establish the team came from, so I could continue facing the challenges of this world." "Today, we are competing in the FIA World Baja Cup with my brother and friend, Omani champion Hamad Al Wahaibi. We hold an advanced position after winning the Italian round and achieving second place in the rounds in Spain and Jordan. We are proud to have a champion with Hamad's experience and achievements in our ranks and we look forward to facing future challenges." Al-Wahaibi also expressed his pride in joining the team. He said: "I am very happy to be with the RX Sport team. This team is ambitious, promising and has proven its worth and high standing in Arab and international motorsport." "Rashid Al Ketbi is very ambitious and passionate about motorsport. He considers this sport the centre of his life and goes to extraordinary lengths to raise the Arab flag high on the international stage. I wish the team all the best and trust that all of their dreams, and Rashid's dreams, will come true in the near future." Khalid Al-Kindi, who has known Rashid Al-Ketbi for a long time and says his 'testimony is biased' in his description, spoke about the team's importance: "What distinguishes the team is that it reflects Rashid Al-Ketbi's passion for motorsports. It's an Emirati team that competes in local and international championships."

Rare Michael Jordan rookie card sells for record $2.5M

A signed 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card sold for a record $2.5 million at auction on Thursday. And the kicker? There was only one bidder. It is the highest price ever paid for a Jordan rookie card, according to the sports collectibles media platform Cllct. The winning -- and only -- bid of $2 million was placed at the auction house Joopiter, which charges a 25 percent buyer's premium to bring the total price to $2.5 million. "It's a shocking amount of money," Cllct reporter and editor Will Stern told Front Office Sports. "I don't think there's anybody who I spoke to within the industry that expected this." FOS cited another memorabilia appraiser that said the "fair market value" of the card is about $1 million. The PSA certified card is rated as a 9 out of 10 for overall condition, while Jordan's autograph is rated a 10. While the record price from a sole bidder, whose name remains unknown, has raised questions within the trading card industry, Joopiter told FOS that the sale had "strong activity from potential buyers in 50 countries." The card is also part of 10 Fleer cards that Jordan secretly signed for a collector in Florida last year. Cllct reported that Jordan typically doesn't sign Fleer cards because he has a deal with Upper Deck, but that the collector paid for Jordan to fly to Florida so the signing could be witnessed by PSA. Sources told Cllct that at least six of the 10 cards were PSA 10s worth $180,000 apiece before the signings, while the PSA 9s had a value of around $16,000 before the autographs. The 10s have not come up for public sale yet. Joopiter was founded in 2022 by singer and music producer Pharrell Williams. The most money paid to date for a Jordan card was $2.928 million for a 1-of-1 2003-04 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection autographed Logoman card in June 2024. —Reuters

South Korea (22 points) and Jordan (16) booked direct spots for the 2026 FIFA World Cup from Group B while Iraq (15) and Oman advanced to the playoffs as third and fourth placed teams from the group. For Oman, it was a memorable comeback defeat after they lost 3-0 to Jordan at home last week. Oman escaped an early scare when a header from Palestine player hit the woodwork in the fourth minute of the match. Munther Al Alawi of Oman had the best chance in the first half as he darted into the box dangerously only to find a defender make a last minute save. Both the teams failed to find the target till thr break but Palestine broke the deadlock soon after resumption when off a corner kick, Kharoub's header beat the Oman defence and goalkeeper Faiz Al Rusheidi. Oman tried hard to find the much-needed equaliser but their efforts suffered a blow in the 73rd minute when the experienced midfielder Harib Al Saadi was given marching orders by the Iranian referee for a tackle that earned him his second yellow card. Down by a man, Oman continued to put pressure on Palestine but the equaliser remained elusive till the last minute of the injury time when they earned a spot kick after Oman's Mohsin Al Ghassani was brought down inside the box by Palestine's Ahmad Taha.
