RX Sport raises the bar for Arab motorsport on the international stage

Times of Omana day ago
DUBAI: Wednesday, August 13: Dubai-based RX Sport is a team led by veteran Emirati champion Rashid Al-Ketbi and is now raising the bar for motorsport on the international stage. It was founded just one month before the 2023 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge.
After a career full of his own personal achievements, Al-Ketbi decided to use his experience and passion to support and develop Arab talent, especially after he was injured during a round of the FIA European Rally Championship.
This passion led the team to compete in the 2024 Dakar Rally, the world's toughest rally, only a few months after its debut in Abu Dhabi. In their second appearance at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, the team won the T4 category, solidifying their strong presence.
RX Sport's ambitions weren't limited to cross-country and Baja World Cup races. The team has also become a platform for celebrating Arab champions and has welcomed notable names like Yahya Al-Helei and his son Mansour, as well as Sheikh Khalid Al-Qassimi for the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge.
While many racing teams exist in the UAE, they often operate on a local scale. This is where RX Sport stands out: it is the first Emirati team to compete internationally in cross-country and Baja rallies.
The team's ambition extends beyond just supporting drivers. It works hard to empower Arab navigators, most notably Khalid Al-Kindi, a step that affirms its comprehensive commitment to elevating motorsport in the region.
Omani rally star Hamad Al-Wahaibi joined RX Sport to compete in the FIA World Baja Cup this season. Al-Wahaibi believes the development of the sport in the region begins with supporting Arab teams, which is why he chose to continue his career under the banner of an Arab team striving for the top.
Al-Wahaibi is joined by Emirati navigator Khalid Al-Kindi on some events, resulting in strong performances that have placed them in contention for the SSV title. The pair still have more events this season, as they prepare for next year's racing programme with RX Sport.
Rashid Al-Ketbi shared his journey. He said: "After my accident in the European Championship, which resulted in a broken back, I couldn't stay away from motorsport, a sport that entered my mind and heart in 1992. That's where the idea to establish the team came from, so I could continue facing the challenges of this world."
"Today, we are competing in the FIA World Baja Cup with my brother and friend, Omani champion Hamad Al Wahaibi. We hold an advanced position after winning the Italian round and achieving second place in the rounds in Spain and Jordan. We are proud to have a champion with Hamad's experience and achievements in our ranks and we look forward to facing future challenges."
Al-Wahaibi also expressed his pride in joining the team. He said: "I am very happy to be with the RX Sport team. This team is ambitious, promising and has proven its worth and high standing in Arab and international motorsport."
"Rashid Al Ketbi is very ambitious and passionate about motorsport. He considers this sport the centre of his life and goes to extraordinary lengths to raise the Arab flag high on the international stage. I wish the team all the best and trust that all of their dreams, and Rashid's dreams, will come true in the near future."
Khalid Al-Kindi, who has known Rashid Al-Ketbi for a long time and says his 'testimony is biased' in his description, spoke about the team's importance: "What distinguishes the team is that it reflects Rashid Al-Ketbi's passion for motorsports. It's an Emirati team that competes in local and international championships."

Rohit Sharma dethrones Babar Azam to move to second spot in ICC ODI Batting Rankings

Dubai : Australia's power-hitter Tim David and South Africa's swashbuckler Dewald Brevis made massive gains in the ICC T20I rankings. On the other hand, Pakistan's premier batter Babar Azam dropped to number three, allowing India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma to occupy the second spot. David, who is the leading run-scorer after the two fixtures against South Africa, jumped six spots to achieve a new career-high 10th position in the Men's T20I Batting Rankings. His compatriot Cameron Green also gained six spots to soar to 17th in the same list. For South Africa, young Brevis blazed his way to the 21st spot after sitting outside the 100 rankings, courtesy of his record-shattering exploits in Darwin. He exploded with a rollicking 125* to help Proteas level the three-match series at 1-1. With his maiden T20I ton, Brevis dazzled with the highest score posted by a player for South Africa, in his ninth appearance for his nation in the format. His fellow teammate Tristan Stubbs jumped 12 spots to equal 27th in the T20I batters list. In the T20I Bowling rankings, Australia's Josh Hazlewood moved up three spots to 20th. Meanwhile, South Africa speedsters Kagiso Rabada progressed 15 places to equal 44th and Lungi Ngidi jumped 14 rungs to 50th in the same standings. Coming to the Men's Test rankings, a host of New Zealand players savoured success following their commanding 2-0 series sweep over Zimbabwe away from home. Experienced quick Matt Henry was adjudged the Player of the Series after he scythed 16 wickets at a sheer average of 9.12. He leapfrogged to his new career-high rating and improved one place to third overall in the Test Bowling Rankings, forcing Australia captain Pat Cummins to slip to number four. In the batters category, Rachin Ravindra (up 15 places to 23rd), Devon Conway (up seven spots to 37th) and Henry Nicholls (up six rungs to 47th) were rewarded for their clinical outing in Zimbabwe. In the ODI list, Pakistan's top order star Babar slipped to the third spot in the batters' standings after his underwhelming show against the West Indies. Babar, known for his refined technique, struck 56 runs across three matches at 18.66. In the ODI Bowling Rankings, West Indies spinner Gudakesh Motie jumped five spots to 12th after picking up a wicket in each of the first two matches of the series. His teammate and Caribbean side's pace spearhead Jayden Seales progressed 24 places to 33rd. Meanwhile, Pakistan's frontline spinner Abrar Ahmed moved up three rungs to 54th.

Padel meets peaks: International players compete in Jabal Akhdar tournament as dusitD2 Naseem champions sports tourism

Jabal Akhdar: Top padel players from across Oman and abroad converged at the scenic heights of Jabal Akhdar on Friday to compete in an exhilarating tournament hosted by dusitD2 Naseem Resort. More than just a sporting event, the tournament served as a dynamic initiative to blend tourism with athletic excellence, drawing both sports enthusiasts and inhouse guests to the mountainside venue. The event is part of a broader vision set by the resort to transform itself into a leading integrated tourism destination in Oman. 'Our vision is to evolve into a truly integrated resort,' said Jagdeep Thakral, General Manager of dusitD2 Naseem. 'Initially, we were known as a family resort. But with the growth in corporate retreats, school group visits, and now competitive sporting events, we are repositioning ourselves as a destination that offers it all.' According to Thakral, the resort's integrated complex is built on five core pillars. 'First is adventure. We've developed the Sultanate's only full-fledged adventure park. Adding to it we have mountain biking trails, and scooters to bring adrenaline to the mountains,' he said. The resort's top official added: 'The second is sport. Our padel and volleyball courts are unmatched in the area, giving us an edge in hosting tournaments and sports events.' Thakral then pointed out to the third pillar- culture. 'The resort offers an immersive Arabic experience through traditional cuisine such as Zarb, live Arabic music featuring the oud, and upcoming Tanoura dance performances to captivate guests,' he said. The general manager said that 'sustainability and nature' is the fourth pillar. 'As part of its green initiative, the resort has planted 400–500 rose bushes, 200 olive trees, and other flora to create a vibrant natural landscape,' he added. And the last pillar is 'shopping and lifestyle'. Thakral said that 'plans are underway to establish a local-style souq (market), bringing authentic shopping experiences directly to visitors.' 'The first padel tournament is a direct extension of this vision. No other mountain destination in Oman offers such a holistic experience under one roof,' he said. Looking ahead, dusitD2 Naseem is set to launch a series of high-adrenaline adventure events, including the Mountain Man Challenge, the Celebrity Challenge, and the Jabal Akhdar Challenge, among others.
