Empowering private sector key to expanding in African markets: Finance Minister

Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk affirmed the government's commitment to empowering Egypt's private sector, particularly in its efforts to expand into African markets. He stressed that the sector has consistently demonstrated agility, growth potential, and competitiveness when supported by a more investment-friendly business environment.
Speaking during a meeting with the Investment and Economic Development Sector of the Egyptian African Businessmen's Association (EABA), Kouchouk highlighted the growing importance of public-private partnership (PPP) projects. He described PPPs as essential instruments for advancing development across the African continent and facilitating deeper regional economic cooperation.
'We are determined to work together to transfer expertise, exchange technical know-how, and share successful reform experiences with our partners in Africa,' the minister stated.
Kouchouk outlined the government's ongoing efforts to stimulate production and boost exports by providing greater support to local companies. He also announced that new structural and administrative reforms are underway within the Tax Authority, aiming to streamline procedures and make compliance easier for taxpayers.
On the customs front, the minister said tangible improvements are expected soon, particularly in reducing clearance times and associated costs. He added that the Finance Ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Investment, is actively working to facilitate trade flows and increase export activity, providing maximum economic backing to exporters.
The minister reiterated the government's commitment to enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian exports in both African and global markets, while also attracting increased domestic and foreign investment.
During the meeting, Yousry El-Sharkawy, Chairperson of the Egyptian African Businessmen's Association, announced the launch of a sustainable dialogue platform with the Finance Ministry through a new 'Think Tank' model. The initiative aims to support ongoing tax and customs reform, and foster long-term collaboration with the private sector. He noted that early signs of improvement have already been observed following the implementation of the first package of tax facilitation measures, which received strong interest from the business community.
Rasha Abdel Aal, Head of the Egyptian Tax Authority, reaffirmed the authority's full commitment to building a transparent, supportive relationship with the private sector. She emphasized efforts to reduce tax disputes, promote compliance, and enhance service quality through practical, flexible solutions developed in cooperation with business partners. These efforts, she said, are aimed at encouraging growth and profitability while generating sustainable returns for the national economy.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Amoui, Head of the Egyptian Customs Authority, noted ongoing efforts to modernize customs operations and reduce clearance times as part of a broader strategy to streamline investment procedures. He highlighted the introduction of a comprehensive risk management system to expedite low-risk shipments, as well as the adoption of automated classification and valuation tools to ensure faster, more accurate tariff assessments and commodity release.
The meeting underscored the government's broader economic reform agenda, focused on easing the path for private sector growth, supporting exporters, and positioning Egypt as a competitive trade and investment hub on the African continent.

Chinese Trina Storage completes Egypt 1st utility-scale solar facility in Aswan - Energy

Trina Storage, a subsidiary of global solar giant Trinasolar, announced on Tuesday the completion of a 300 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Aswan Governorate, Egypt's first integrated solar and battery storage facility, according to a statement by the Chinese company shared with Ahram Online. The project, developed in partnership with Dubai-based AMEA Power, was delivered in just 60 days, ahead of its scheduled commercial operation date. It set a new regional benchmark for large-scale energy storage deployment across North Africa. The newly commissioned BESS is co-located with AMEA Power's 500 MW solar PV plant, which began operations in December 2024. The combined facility is expected to enhance the resilience of Egypt's national electricity grid and ensure reliable solar power delivery beyond daylight hours. 'Faced with high desert temperatures and a complex grid environment, we successfully completed the project — from installation to grid connection — in just two months,' said Vincent Wu, Global Sales vice president and MEA MU head at Trinasolar. 'This achievement demonstrates not only our technological capabilities but also our commitment to fast and reliable project execution in support of Egypt's energy stability,' he added. The energy storage system, built on Trina Storage's advanced Elementa 2 platform, includes in-house-manufactured LFP battery cells and a full-stack solution from DC compartments to the AC interface, enabling direct connection to the national grid. The system is tailored for harsh desert climates, boasting high energy density, modular design, liquid cooling, and safety-driven engineering. Chairman of AMEA Power Hussain Al Nowais described the facility as a 'landmark' for Egypt's renewable energy ambitions. 'We are proud to bring this project online, which significantly strengthens the resilience of Egypt's power grid,' Al Nowais said. 'This milestone reaffirms our commitment to innovation and sustainability in Egypt and across the African continent.' According to the statement, the rapid delivery was made possible through close coordination between Trina Storage's global technical teams and local partners, as well as early-stage customization to adapt to the local environment. The project is part of Egypt's broader Vision 2030 strategy, which aims to generate 42 percent of the country's electricity from renewable sources by 2035. The integration of large-scale energy storage is seen as a key enabler for this goal, allowing for greater flexibility and reliability as renewables are added to the grid. Trina Storage's involvement in Egypt underscores its growing footprint across the Middle East and Africa, positioning the company as a strategic partner in the region's accelerating energy transition. Standard Chartered: Egypt to receive US$6 Billion from Qatar and Kuwait before end of 2025

The Standard Chartered Bank said that the Egyptian economy will remain strong, with macroeconomic stability despite rapid global shifts – particularly in the United States, China, and the Eurozone. In a report titled 'Global Focus – Economic Outlook for the Second Half of 2025', the bank explained that this outlook is fueled by strong foreign exchange inflows from portfolio investments and official sectors, increasing confidence in the Egyptian pound. Standard Chartered expects more than 50 percent of the major investment pledges from Qatar and Kuwait, totaling US$ 12.5 billion, to be disbursed by the end of this year. It added that despite the Central Bank of Egypt's continued monetary easing policy to stimulate growth, the carry trade remains at the forefront of investor interest, supported by the success of the foreign exchange convertibility test. Standard Chartered noted that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has affirmed its interest in advancing structural reforms in Egypt, calling for the adoption of tighter fiscal policies and accelerating privatization efforts. These reforms aim to boost investment flows, paving the way for sustainable growth in the country. The Bank forecasts Egypt's GDP to grow by 4.5 percent in fiscal year 2026, emphasizing the pivotal role private investment plays in stimulating economic recovery. The CEO of Standard Chartered Egypt, Mohamed Gad, explained that the Egyptian economy continues to progress toward a promising path, expecting the current account deficit to narrow, supported by a rise in remittances from Egyptians working abroad, which jumped by about 60 percent year-on-year in March – in addition to a recovery in the export sector. According to the report, inflation is likely to stabilize in the 13-17 percent range, while the CBE is expected to approach interest rate cuts cautiously, with the key interest rate expected to reach 19.25 percent by the end of the year. Average inflation is estimated to reach around 11 percent in fiscal year 2026, with continued cost pressures in the healthcare, food, and transportation sectors. However, Egypt's proactive policy measures are believed to help overcome these challenges and strengthen the economy's long-term resilience. Edited translation from Al-Masry Al-Youm
